Can a Human Being Pull for Germany in the World Cup? Sure.

When I asked a friend who lives in the Netherlands who he’s for, he emailed me to say Brazil, then said a few words about Germany:

Germany—who’s for Germany outside of Germany? Although I must admit that the social attitudes in Europe towards that country are changing, slowly. One of the reasons is this World Cup that they’ve organized; it’s totally free of hooliganism and different nationalities are sitting with each other digging on the sport.

Cool.

Germany's team isn't pompous or arrogant, they play well, and they might be the most exciting European team, with the new "American" style tactics of their coach, Jurgen Klinsmann. (He lives in California.)

Unlike FIFA and various national soccer federations in Europe, Germany took racism and hooliganism seriously. They have organized a great World Cup.

One can't look solipsistically at Germany only through the lens of WW II. Never forget, yes, but new worlds await. I've always enjoyed travelling in Germany, Berlin is fascinating, and despite the occasional boorish German asshole (we Americans have 'em too), provincial stereotypes many Americans hold are passe.
