The Goal Shortage in the World Cup, or What Soccer Can Learn From Basketball

As I calculate it, there’ve been six games in the second round with a total of eight goals. Total elapsed time: 600 minutes. That’s a goal every 75 minutes. Ugh. Even a sportsfiend like myself has a hard time watching Ukraine and Switzerland doing nothing for 120 minutes.

Soccer should learn something from its dribble-to-the-net kinsman, basketball. Unlimited substitutions, and if you foul out, you leave the game but get replaced. We’d get to see more faces in the game, and more goals. The higher-scoring games wouldn’t have to be decided by penalty kicks. And redcarding refs wouldn’t ruin the games.
