   Phil,

   We have one mission, to destroy and contain tyrants.

   The Soviets were tyrants.

   The Iranians are tyrants.

   We can not bless these tyrants.

   The ordinary Soviets were, and are somehow, and the current Iranians are definitely locked into miserable jails.

   We, the free Americans can not rest in comfort while others are dying in concentration camps and barbarian prisons.

   Even though Israel may have more tank formations at the ready than all of Western European NATO and the US have on active duty and may possess enough atomic bombs to flatten the downtowns of all of the above (if Israel delivered outside the Middle East) an Israeli defense analyst recently speculated that Israel was vulnerable to a single nuclear strike against Tel Aviv — following which he expected the rest of the country would quickly empty out. Enough Israelis might take the hint to flee which would insure that more would flee and so on.

   The same abandonment scenario might be achieved simply by sneaking the unarmed works of a nuclear bomb — w/o plutonium — into Tel Aviv, and letting Israelis find it there. Nobody could be blamed for sure — and there would be no reason to retaliate — the perfect crime.

   [It could happen to New York. Israel herself could plant nuclear-free bomb works in New York to make us think the Arabs did it. There are some ruthless folks in Mossad, like almost anywhere else you look. I recently read Red Star Rogue -- an extremely believable report that old Soviet hardliners may have tried to start a nuclear war between the US and China by staging what was to have looked like a Chinese sub nuking Hawaii, but which sub blew itself up.]

   All of which possibly leaves Israel only the ultimate hard-option defense: Stanley Kubrick and build a doom's-day device, automatically triggered — w/o possible human intervention — by an atomic attack on Israel.

   Actually, if I remember my 1960s readings (see Herman Kahn) correctly, a genuine dooms day device requires thermonuclear technology and is far beyond Israel's technical capabilities. But, Israel might go for a poor mans version –rigging up half of her Hiroshima type bombs underground, in a wide spread pattern designed to blow enough earth into the upper atmosphere to block out the sun for a couple of years.

   I wonder if the Bush non-administration would offer technical advice to help Israel along with such a device or just sit passively by as the work went forward.

   — or — alternately —

   Israel could choose the ultimate soft option — practiced successfully around the world — Israel could learn to get along with her neighbors — which includes not invading and settling upon them. It asks a lot, but desperate times sometimes require truly desperate measures.

   Whatever injustice Israel inflicted to re-create herself 60 years ago is nothing compared to the permanent, in your face repression she must inflict on people in her occupied territories today. The Arab world would likely be willing to live with 60 year old wrongs by now, if Israel had not made them relive the founding process all over again — in 49 times more vicious form.

   A smart Jew gave the world E = MC squared in the twentieth century.

   Twenty centuries earlier, a "Smarter Jew" (by me) gave the world: "Love thy neighbor as thyself, already*"
