I know that you do not read the comments but I want to say that you are really providing a unique service to US politics. At some point there is a book here that has some real potential to alter the course of things.

For his part, Obama needs to call out Hillary on rumors saying that she will appoint Lorena Bobbitt as Secretary of HHS, impose mandatory orchidectomy on men accused of violence (even violent speech), and surround herself with a palace guard of catty eunuchs.

"""Many of her supporters clearly believe that Obama will adopt a more evenhanded policy in the Middle East,"""

Attacking Obama in this way would be baseless and stupid. Obama has been in the Senate for four years. During this time he has supported the alliance between the US and Israel.

And I say that as someone who supports Hill.

"""Let's have it out. Is Obama adviser Samantha Power too critical of Israel for America's future?"""

Who? What does she have to do with Obama, and why does it matter? Obama has lots of advisors, and they don't agree.

"""(No) Is Rob Malley, apparently some sort of consultant to Obama,"""

Why should Hill attack Obama over this, when literally 99.9 percent of the electorate would neither know nor care? I cannot imagine Hill giving a speech about such piffle.

""""Didn't Obama offer comfort to American Arabs re Palestine in his Chicago days?"""

What does "offer comfort to American Arabs" mean? Assuming it were true, why should I care?

And I say that as a pro-Israel person who supports Hillary. Hillary would look like an idiot if she attacks Obama where there is no evidence.

"""Inform the American people."""

I doubt that inaccurate, ineffective attacks on Obama will inform anyone.

"""One of the problems with the Israel lobby is that it's so unspoken."""

Visit the website http://www.aipac.org/ which is entitled "AIPAC--America's Pro-Israel Lobby." Doesn't sound unspoken to me.

yo, philz !

i'm not meaning to crash ya party or anything, but i find da idea of more even-handedness in american reporting about israel/palestine a cool thing.

one of those unbalanced things i've noticed is that each time israel commits some major atrocity, a new holocaust museum springs up here or there, like, in samoa or kuala lumpur or elsewhere. not that that is a bad thing in and of itself, but, i mean, where do they store all those lampshades made of jewish hides and soaps made of jewish fat (no offense intended, i dont mean to say that there are or were fat jews) - because, judging by the quantity of holocaust museums springing up everywhere these days, there must be an awful lot of that stuff somewhere, and, given israels attitude, they'll need quite a lot more of it to brush over what they're doing to the palestinians.

i mean, they do have all that ghastly stuff to show to the people, don't they ?

I've come to think that there is no more out-of-touch commentator on American political life than Philip Weiss. He projects his own obsessions onto everyone, and everything, around him. He is convinced that there is a lethal hold on the world exerted by Jews Money and Israel. The fact that most Americans, and most non-Muslims everyone, reject this theory bothers him only is so much as it means the message is not getting out. Similarly, his own lack of success as a writer (the last time he asked to get paid for his efforts he was unceremoniously fired) work nicely into this conspiracy theory.

Whoa, that was real deep, Mr. Yale historian. Go straight for the ad hominem and don't bother with anything logical.

I think Phil is too obsessed, but you picked an odd post to come in with that critique. The Israeli/Palestinian issue is a very important one, and it's one that is virtually never discussed honestly in mainstream American politics, in part because of the Israel lobby. Phil is right on this point. That doesn't mean the Israel lobby is all-powerful or runs US foreign policy in general, or anything silly like that. It's merely a recognition that a very loud interest group can exert great influence on one particular (and important) issue.

Yes Donald is right. Sort of like the Lobby has no real power to muzzle the media and its reporting of the Rosen and Weissman espionage trial. The media just thinks no Americans would be interested in the fact that a Bush adminstration official is in prison and two of the Lobbies top ranking officials are on trial for spying for our goodest and bestus friend in the whole wide world, Israel. Yawn.

I wonder if that "David Brion Davis" really was the Yale historian. If so, it's a depressing example of a respected historian demonstrating that scholarly accomplishment doesn't mean one can't be a jerk.

And it's not like I even disagree with part of what Davis said. Phil does go too far sometimes--he is obsessed. But only a dishonest hack would take this to mean that one can't wish for more honesty in our politics about the I/P conflict. Which is where Davis comes in.

Orwell might have been considered obsessed as well, but his critiques look a little more prescient than say Harold Laski's nowadays. He had 'the power of facing unpleasant truths', as Philip does. Some things are worth obsessing about; indeed some things NEED obsessing about.

Enjoy life inside the bubble Mr Brion Davis; it will burst before too long.
