In Jerusalem, American Jewish Leader Frets Over Obama, ‘Change’ Agenda, Ron Paul, and Walt & Mearsheimer

The greatest newspaper in the world, Haaretz, reports that Malcolm Hoenlein, the head of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, said in Jerusalem that he is concerned by all the calls for "change" in the U.S. presidential campaign. Change from what? he asks; it could open the door to all kinds of "mischief." I.e., questioning Israel policy. He senses that people who are drawn to Obama and Ron Paul are anti-Israel.

Israel's support is stronger than ever politically, Hoenlein reports, but he is concerned that the support is "thin" and a lot of Americans now see Israel as "dark and militaristic."

Hoenlein said that Israel's supporters should be worried by... "the greater tolerance of anti-Israel statements that wouldn't have been allowed in the past." He singled out the Walt-Mearschimer [sic] book on the Israel lobby, that "has become a bestseller and a college textbook" and said that there "is a steady poisoning of the elites, mainly on campuses that could trickle down." He also mentioned Republican candidate Ron Paul, saying "he is openly anti-Israel..."

Note that Hoenlein and Marty Peretz disagree sharply, at least for public consumption, re Walt and Mearsheimer's success. Marty says--also in Haaretz--that the publisher lost a lot of money and it's a warning to others not to go there and no one is taking the book very seriously. Hoenlein says it's a bestseller and everyone is going there now and it's poisoning us elites.

Gentlemen, get your talking points straight!

Also note that Hoenlein says that certain anti-Israel statements "wouldn't have been allowed in the past." Good point. Like you weren't allowed to even say that you thought Israel was "dark and militaristic." That's called censorship.

Bring on a THE AWAKENING. to US shores. Camp David Hilary vote-getting land deal giveaway amd bomb-ending Iraq war, no more.
The practicing Momon didn't make it(too bad), but hopefully a person of African descent will grab the ring. A fine line 40+ protestant,1 Roman Catholic, 1 muslim/african. Judaism get in line! no matter how powerful your lobby. A stench in ME since 1967is what is poisoning the elite. Feel the breeze and have a whiff.

The other day I was driving through the downtown homeless area. I blew my horn as the indigenous crossed in front of me, refusing to recognize my very existence. Then I heard one of them say “wish I had a hellfire missile to blow your a– out of this world”. Ah, finally some recognition! But this was very hateful (and besides, compared to him I own this road), so I ran over the guy with my tank.

Later, while driving home on the freeway, a fast car came up on the right. I fired a couple of rounds from my uzi into his tires and he crashed and burned. When the cop asked me why, I told him my personal security was threatened because I can see the evil that lurks in men's hearts.

The heck with defensive driving; if you can foresee the future you would be stupid not to drive pre-emptively (and also stupid not to get a job selling futures at Goldman Sacks).

" Speaking of talking out of both sides of your mouth ". Non-whites and non-Christians have the " right and priviledge " of talking about maintaining or enhancing their " empowerment " at the expense of others in a given society without being " condemned " for bigotry, hate crime, discrimination, etc.; while the complete opposite is true for white-Christians. This " double standard " and hypocrisy is so flagarant , so long in time; it's nauseating to me !

Part of the problem is that eastern elites, who are only one to three generations an American, are steeped in European thought processes that govenment should control the mind of men and a nation. This is alien to what has historically been the id of America.

    Actually its called misrepresentation.

Israel is a vibrant democracy, in need of reform to become more vibrant.

Hey, anybody see the car the (now) dead arab was driving in Damascus? In fucking Damascus, friends! Now that's what I call "Jewish Power."

  8. SMACKAZILLA says:

You don't have to be anti-Israel to be Pro-American!! Its time that Americans worry for the sake of Americans by not sending anymore foreign aid to Foreign countries such as Israel…….If your as great as you think you are than by all sakes you can take care of your self! Its amazing to think people are anti-israel because you a sucking us dry with your aid and your wars……you all had the crazy Idea to live in the holy land now suffer the consequences of your actions!

  9. Charles Keating says:

A dark and militaristic vibrant democracy. A vibrant democracy, glittering with dark militarism. Israel? USA? Certainly not the arab
nations since they don't even pop up to this level of quicksand. African nations. LOL. South American nations? LQ (laughing quietly). Asia? LOL (All the way to the bank, undemocratically). Russia? LOL. Europe? Ah, maybe…

  10. Simon B says:

    Non-interventionism is not anti-Israel.

  11. samuel burke says:

    the statement that…
Israel is a vibrant democracy, in need of reform to become more vibrant…is the biggest crock of apologetics for the crimes that israel has commited against the oppressed palestinians that i have ever seen…

israels apologist ought to look back into history and remember the crimes commted against the jews during ww2 and how those crimes were also justified by valid reasoning.

no shame ……the jews who defend israel surely are not menshes and have lost all touch with their judaism, they are zionist apologetics and would be prosecuted under the right circumstances, or at least accused of collaborating with the enemy in a tribunal…stalin style.

the tide is turning and will continnue to turn….jump ship.

  12. Gene says:

The notion that a country can't be both a democracy and "dark and militaristic" comes as a suprise to those of us who wonder why the US currently has bases in some 170 countries and, 60 years after the war, still has troops in Germany and Japan.

  13. Donald says:

Hell, most of its history the US has been a vibrant, dark, militaristic democracy. Nobody bothered with silly slogans like "a land without a people for a people without a land". They just stole the land.

Well, I take it back–there were silly slogans like "Manifest Destiny". Anyway, the US and Israel have a lot in common.

  14. Charles Keating says:

Yes, the US and Israel have a lot in common; the Zionists have played on this for many decades; now, the neocons have aped
Likud policy, enlisting all Americans in the same strategy and tactics–the most immediate flunkies for this view of the world
are USA military families and IDF families.

  15. Charles Keating says:

I guess nobody learned from the Nuremberg trials, or even the example of South Africa. Given the history of imperialism and colonialism, how does Israel fit in on the world's humane timeline?

  16. Bill Ott says:

Neither Ron Paul nor I hates Israel. We do hate the American Congress and President stealing his and my money through taxation, increased debt or inflation and sending it to ANY COUNTRY not just Israel. If the 189,999,999 American taxpayers(All except me) write a check for $1000 each and send it to Israel then that is their decision.

I do not want the government to steal my money and hand it over to Israel nor do I want my government to hand money over to the enemies of Israel, LIKE HAMAS and HEZEBOLLA who are also on the US Government dole.

So we are Pro Israel as we do not want Israel as a dependent state but as a prosperous and free one.

  17. Charles Keating says:

Bill: Get a grip. Google USA aid to Israel. It's not like the average American has a choice. Also, add in aid to Egypt–we buy them off every year to make nice with Israel. What's left for the rest of the world, not to mention the Katrina victims or Health Care.

  18. lester says:

he's absolutely right. if obama or even huckabee gets the nod, the dialogue will leave the beltway and go back to America, where common sense could well prevail.

washington is where all the obstacles are, not kansas or chicago

  19. Richard Witty says:

"Given the history of imperialism and colonialism, how does Israel fit in on the world's humane timeline?"

A leading example of democracy in an environment in which most states would impose martial law.

  20. Donald says:

""Given the history of imperialism and colonialism, how does Israel fit in on the world's humane timeline?"

A leading example of democracy in an environment in which most states would impose martial law."

What a creepy, insensitive thing to say, Richard. Yeah, Israel is a democracy. But guess what? Historically speaking, democracies are often as brutal as dictatorships to the people who can't vote. See US history of examples, along with Israel and apartheid South Africa.

  21. Richard Witty says:

    Donald,
Israel is a jewel FOR retaining democracy (even for potentially suspected minorities), in settings where lesser states impose martial law.

If you value democracy, then the appropriate thing to do is to identify it, emphasize it and encourage it.

It is on a continuum in Israel, very strong, quite confident in primary measures, but not perfect.

  22. Charles Keating says:

Considering Israel does not have a constitution (or clear borders), at least it has more free speech than the USA. The Arab nations, forget about it. The USA, nearly so. Israel apes the USA and visa versa, the rest in the Middle East don't even try–they have no effective marketing department, nor actuality of even a pretense of democracy on the ground. If Ron Paul was elected, which is not to be, and manipulated so by MSM, I'm thinking it would be better for Israel and the USA–nothing like a little real honesty overpowering the totally selfish agendas.

  23. steven montross says:

Americas biggest foreign aid recipient for decades and still so many Palestinians living in squalor. Big surprise it's a hotbed of fanaticism. I know who isn't likely to strap on a bomb and blow themselves into bloody mist, well educated middle class people.

  24. Charles Keating says:

Yeah, that's true, but (comparatively) not on the Palestinian side–which shows who is losing to date.
