The Times Insists on Talking About Jewish ‘Voters,’ Not Donors…

US Politics

One of the most emailed stories in yesterday’s Times is a story I’ve covered repeatedly here, Obama’s difficulties courting Jews. The Times emphasized the importance of the at-first private meeting Obama had with 100 Cleveland Jews last week, the meeting I’ve compared to Kennedy meeting the Protestant ministers in 1960, and then it offered this analysis:

Jews make up about 1.7 percent of the adult population, but they are a
stronghold of the Democratic base and important to the party’s
fund-raising. Over all, Jews made up 5 percent of the voters when more than 20 states voted on Feb. 5…

And that’s all. These statements beg the obvious question, whether Jews are not far more important as donors than they are as voters. Yet the Times repeatedly refers to Obama’s efforts with "Jewish voters." Is that really the problem? I have many times cited a Washington Post assertion that Jews make up half the givers to Democratic candidates; and added my own reporting, from Clintonite  Steve Rabinowitz, that if anyone did a study of how much Dem money comes from Jews, it would fuel conspiracy theories…

Shouldn’t the Times get past the hypocrisy here? Shouldn’t it describe the actual power of Jews in the political process, and the reasons that Obama has been so craven? I’d like to know about this in real detail. And the story would get a lot of attention…

Conspiracy? Hey, no David Duke's here. Aw, it's just a coincidence. Ask Witty. Why is Goldman Sachs buying our election??? The Wikipedia article on Goldman Sachs alone is enough to be a wake up call to SANE individuals. They are the big sucking chest wound on the heart of America.

    Mountain out of a molehill.

Perhaps the real question is why so many non-Jewish Americans DIVEST of their right/responsibility to contribute, except perhaps corporate coerced givers.

Jewish contributors are diverse and have major financial effects on EVERY one of the campaigns. And, the message that they convey with that is diverse. It includes the message, "We are giving you this money because we want to stay in Iraq."

AND, "We are giving you this money because we want America to get out of Iraq."

    DIVERSITY.

Similar with approaches to relationship with Israel. The one common view among most Jewish donors, is that they don't want Israel exposed to terrorist violence, an opinion that I hope you share.

Also, the primary season IS about voters mostly. The last six month was donor focused.

    What's up with you Phil?

Movers and shakers in Goldman Sachs. link to en.wikipedia.org

Goldman can't be blamed for the retail lenders who pushed unaffordable mortgages on to working-class Americans who couldn't afford the repayments. But the firm is part of a Wall Street culture of trading mortgage loans through debt structures of such a Byzantine nature that nobody knows where the risk finally lies.

"I have many times cited a Washington Post assertion that Jews make up half the givers to Democratic candidates."

J.J. Goldberg made the same assertion in his eye-opening book, "Jewish Power." Studies of donor lists have reached similar conclusions. I don't think the proposition that Jews provide half the funding of the Democratic Party is seriously contested.

Even if this funding represented diverse viewpoints (as R. Witty rather unconvincingly claims), it is certainly newsworthy.

For instance, what if half the Democratic Party's funding came from Korean-Americans? One would not have to be biased against Asians to ask how the hell such a bizarre ethnic concentration could occur in a big, diverse country — and what the agenda of these unusually-committed donors was. The press certainly didn't let ethnic sensitivities restrain them from reporting on Tongsun Park and the Koreagate scandal.

It seems that only ONE ethnic group insists upon complete discretion and anonymity in regard to its unusual political activities — "Nobody here but us Americans!" LOL

"if anyone did a study of how much Dem money comes from Jews, it would fuel conspiracy theories…"

"It seems that only ONE ethnic group insists upon complete discretion and anonymity in regard to its unusual political activities"

I'm beginning to wonder if the "conspiracy theories" canard, like overblown charges of "anti-Semitism," has become an all-purpose cudgel in which to beat back legitimate inquiry and criticism of the Israel Lobby in all its forms, including the local shetel in which plotting to advance Israel's interests at America's expense takes place. In fact, I'm beginning to wonder if modern Judaism is a religion at all half so much as it is a secular network designed to advance its members' interests and the interests of Israel vis a vis the gentile world. I'm beginning to think members of modern organized Jewry use the religious designation as a front in order to shield their illegal activities from oversight by law enforcement.

On another thread, liberalwhiteboy linked to the following article from Haaretz:
‘An invention called 'the Jewish people'
    link to haaretz.com

Organized Jewry appears to be making up its myths as it goes along. I speculate that, like the mafia, the pursuit of money is what animates and motivates the movers and shakers at the core of the enterprise. No wonder certain Jews resort to threats when intellectual inquiry into organized Judaism (ie Walt and Mearsheimer’s ‘The Israel Lobby’) starts getting uncomfortably close to the truth.

    Montain or molehill"

1.) In 2006 investment banking revenue reached nearly $38 billion dollars compared to $25 billion dollars in 2004 – an increase of 34% (Financial Times Dec. 13, 2006 p.15).

2.) Living (including working) conditions have declined sharply.  “Why Ordinary Americans have Missed Out on the Benefits of Growth” (Financial Times 11-2-06 p.11).

3.) According to the Financial Times (December 21, 2006), billionaire Stephen Schwartzman, CEO of the private equity group Blackstone warned “that the widening gap between Wall Street’s lavish pay packages and middle America’s stagnating wages risks causing a political and social backlash against the US’s ‘New Rich’”.  Treasury Secretary and former CEO of Goldman Sachs, Hank Paulson admitted that median wage stagnation was a problem and that amidst “strong economic expansion many Americans simply are not feeling (sic!) the benefits.” Inequality in the distribution of national income in the US is the worst in the entire developed capitalist world.
    Financial Times, 11-2-'06 p. 11).

4.) Inequality in the distribution of national income in the US is the worst in the entire developed capitalist world. (Ditto)

5.) The political power of finance capital and its ‘associated’ conglomerates wield uncontested political power in the US in comparison to any country in Europe.  As a result the US government redistributes far less through the tax and social security, health and educational system than other countries.
    (Ditto)

6.) Neither the Democratic Party majority in Congress, nor the Republican-controlled Executive offer any proposals to challenge the financial ruling class’s dominance nor are there any proposals to reverse its most retrograde policies causing the growing inequalities, wage stagnation and the increasing rigidity of the class structure.  The reason has been reported in the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times: An overwhelming chunk of the funds that Democrats raise nationally for election campaigns comes either from Wall Street financiers or Silicon Valley software entrepreneurs. (FT November 3, 2006 p. 13).  The Democratic congressional electoral campaign was tightly controlled by two of Wall Street’s favorite Democrats, Senator Charles ‘Israel First’ Schumer and Congressman Rahm Immanuel, who selectively funded candidates who were pro-war, pro-Wall Street and unconditionally pro-Israel.  Democrats slated to head strategic Congressional committees like Zion-Lib Barney Frank have already announced they have ‘good working relations’ with Wall Street.

    7.) Ergo:
US financial and manufacturing ruling classes have long influenced, advised and formulated policy for US Presidents.  But given the stakes, the risks and the opportunities facing the financial ruling class, it has moved directly into key government posts.  What is especially unprecedented is the dominant presence of members from one investment bank – Goldman Sachs.

Baker, Carter, former military commanders of US forces in Iraq have been savaged by the Zionist ideologues.  Under their influence the White House is putting into practice the war strategy presented by the ‘American’ Enterprise Institute (a Zioncon thinktank).

As a result parallel to Bush’s appointment of Paulson and Wall Streeters to run imperial economic policy, he has appointed an entire new pro-war civilian military-security apparatus to escalate and extend the Middle East wars to Africa (Somalia) and Latin America (Venezuela).

One of the main threats to world markets – and the health of the financial ruling class – is an Israeli military attack on Iran. Likely it will take a catastrophe, like a White House-back Israeli nuclear attack on Iran to detonate the kind of crisis which will provoke a deep and widespread popular backlash of all things military, financial–and made in Israel.

Guess what happens when folk try to delve into the very subject you're debating here, Phil? I tried the link below I got a sign come up., Access Forbidden. Zionists/Israel lobby are locking us out of the internet. This is a disgrace.

"When I submitted my last article for publication, I discovered a censorship problem that I had never encountered before … I also learned that the ADL is at the forefront of the movement to regulate information on the Internet which they deem offensive … Political correctness, concerning issues relating to Israel and especially to Zionism, is being forced upon the Internet under the guise of combating "hate speech," through the tactic of intimidation, based on fear of economic reprisals against network suppliers … This is the pro-Israel lobby's real power to wield through its wealthy donors, the promise of economic rewards for those who support Israel and punishment for those who oppose the Zionist plans.."

is Hillary Clinton still in control of her campaign and political future, or is it in the hands of NeoCon advisor Mark Penn, whose interests may diverge from Hill's. he may simply want to destroy Obama and the Democratic Party's chances vs McCain. under the cover of "fighting all the way to the Convention" Penn and his cohort will throw the election. certainly his clients at Burston-Marsteller wont complain.

There were a few other things about that article I found disturbing. First, the author actually interviewed Ed Lasky of American "Thinker." That's like interviewing a reporter for the National Inquirer & putting it on the front page.

Then, she didn't bother to interview anyone who disputes Lasky's lies in the media. She didn't bother to do any homework to discover blogs like Phil's or mine or many others which have worked assiduously at combatting Lasky's hysteria.

She made a good pt about the generational split among Jews supporting Clinton as opposed to Obama, but then never interviewed anyone representing such a split.

I wrote her pointing out these things & all she could muster was she was on deadline & didn't have enough time to get into details. She claims there was a quote fr. a young Orthodox Jew that ended up on the cutting rm floor. Disappointing.
