Sadly, the obsession with slapping surnames on everything in sight filters downward, so that in smaller towns one finds soccer fields, municipal annexes, even highway exits named after local grandees.

One of the most obnoxious manifestations of this phenomenon is on modern college campuses, where every monumental new building has some wealthy donor's name chiseled into it.

The highest form of charity is anonymous charity. Schwartzman may have wealth. But no amount of $100 million gifts can ever give him good taste.

Yeah, "your poeple are principals in society" – wonder how history will record their epic rise and what it meant to ordianry folk and old democracy. Terribly sad that bad money can do this to a great public institution. Where are jewish voices against this? NY Times? It's "my people" who bare the brunt.

Hmm…..actually, it is very common for libraries to be named after people who give money. In fact, NYPL is already so named. It is actually The New York Public Library, Astor, Lennox and Tilden Foundation. And the perf arts library is named after the Cullmans, Schomburg is named after someone. It is a long tradition in NYC (go to any museum) with a combo of private and public funding for almost every institution. It may be tough, but it is what makes them great.

The arts–even in secular stone churches, temples, or mosques, always need their sponsers. It's a dual thing for the masses, any renaissance. It relies on expensive awe art, and the mass lack of time to contemplate. Everybody more aware relies on the fact most people have neither the time, nor the inclination, to check the pimples on the beauty figure.
