Politico is reporting that Karl Rove wants Joe Lieberman to get out of the running for McCain VP. Fascinating. It shows that Rove is afraid of the neoconservative movement in the Republican Party, as a threat to the social conservatives who owned the party for 30 years. Rove knows that Lieberman has a big following, including the "well-funded" neocons (as even Brit Tzedek admits). A source on this report seems to be Robert Novak, who of course is somewhat pro-Palestinian (and I think an assimilated former Jew?), with lines into Rove. Don't you see what is happening here? The Sheldon Adelson one-state-in-the-Land of Israel and bomb Iran now guys are trying to get the Republican Party. Rove seems to fear that McCain lacks the ability to resist this movement on his own, by cashiering the Lieberman train. Rove is getting paleo–which unlike polio, is a sign of health.

It's maybe a categorical error to put the Rove-Bush hierarchy in its supposed linear arrangement. And putting Bush at the top of any power chain whatsoever is ingenuous.
It smells like Cheney and Bush are totally in the pocket, almost as though somebody's got the goods on them to such a degree they're frozen in place, until told where and how to move. Blackmail, extortion, one of those.
I see nothing spontaneous about either figure, certainly nothing principled guiding their actions, which are pretty clearly not directed by anything like long-term self-interest.

Just as Obama faces some racism (not all that much, I don't think), I'll bet that Rove is thinking that republican Christians would never in a million years elect a Jew for vice-president.
If the republicans lose even 4% of the vote for that bigotry, they'd lose the election.

I think that nominating Lieberman as VP would be interesting. It would make Israel and McCain's aggressive foreign policy center stage in the election debate. I think it would make it harder for McCain to win.
I am for Obama over McCain any day mostly because of the foreign policy differences — but of the Republicans I most favored Romney as I am a stanch capitalist. I think that Romney would be a calming influence on McCain as I think that McCain is somewhat senile and Romney is exceedingly competent and evenkealed and not at his core a war mongerer, rather a competent leader.
To answer your question about Novak, he was bar mitzvahed as a kid, but converted to Catholicism as an adult, not unlike CNBC's Larry Kudlow. Except Novak was note a cokehead that way Kudlow was in the 80's.
Believe it or not, I figure they'd pick Romney before Lieberman mostly because they need a somewhat physically attractive male to, they hope, somewhat offset Obama's
advantage over stuperannuated McCain, Biden also having a marked edge on Holy Joe in this category.
I would vote for Nader before either.
