Another horrifying story from the Occupied Territories. This one took place yesterday in Nablus. An Israeli raid on a house where a Palestinian was apparently accused of owning a weapon. A beating. A 20-year-old neighbor, Waled Fareed Fretekh, comes to witness. He is shot repeatedly in the legs. The soldiers refuse to let him be taken away to a hospital for 90 minutes. He dies of loss of blood. The mind reels. Coetzee tales of South Africa. Gestapo. East German police. Gulag stuff. But now, and in our name.

"But now, and in our name."
This stuff has been going on for quite some thime. It's not just now.
Do you mean in the name of America, or in the name of Jews? I don't feel responsible at all.
Phil, for a self-proclaimed "non-Zionist," you certainly have the Zionist lingo down.
No, it's not "in our name."
The crimes committed in our name are America's and, as awful as the occupation is, those crimes outweigh anything Israel has ever committed.
We are Americans and, as Americans, are responsible for what America does "in our name."
God knows, America supports the occupation, but that still does not make crimes committed by the IDF, crimes in "our name." We have enough reason for guilt over our crimes in Iraq to take on Israel's too!
MJ, I don't even feel guilt for the crimes in Iraq, since there was nothing that I could have possibly done to prevent the invasion. I didn't join the military because I'm not siupid enough to trust my rulers. Other than going to jail for a meaningless political gesture, what can an ordinary American do? The politicians wanted this war whether Americans went along with it or not.
Of course these are crimes "in our name'…and the whole world knows it.
If not for the support from the US Israel would not have been able and would not be able now to carry out this occupation and these crimes. And if not for the jewish community and their lobby our politicans would not support it. And if not for Americans allowing our politicans to support Israel it would not be happening.
When our politicans stand up and defend Israel's actions and call black white they are 'speaking in 'our name.'
Any other confirmation of the story?
"Of course these are crimes "in our name'…and the whole world knows it."
Do you support the actions that made the crimes possible? Could you have done anything to stop the actions and crimes? For me, the answer is no to both questions. I feel disgust and powerlessness, but I don't feel guilty.
I have to agree with you guys. I don't feel guilt about what America has done either. I draft dodged Vietnam. I marched against Iraq.
I mean, it's not much.
But I don't feel I'm implicated.
Sure, the ISM. Talk about an unimpeachable source.
Here's a photograph of the deceased that's out on yahoo – rather startling, so be cautioned that it's a full-on headshot.

Strange photograph. Why did the person not wait till people had their hand withdrawn? Why the hand on the face covering the mouth?
And don't you close dead people's eyes? Wouldn't his mother have done?
What do you mean confirmation of the story? What possible motive would an armed terrorist militia have to lie about the evil Jews killing in cold blood of one of their innocent virgin schoolboys?
Shame on you, Richard.
Sorry I expressed skepticism of Phil's journalistic integrity, you know publishing first, asking questions later.
Rich Corey, well there are a couple of contradictions. The article tells us he was shot into his leg, the picture distributed shows bandages around the head. Why bandage a dead man's head, when he was shot in his leg?
Admittedly I do not have the slightest idea of Palestinian funeral rites.
And I am not a doctor, but if somebody bleeds to dead he needs to have lost 30% of his blood. I don't know why, but this is nothing I would expect from bullets in the legs but more from such higher up in the thorax, stomach, abdomen region.
Did he loose all the blood in the improvised operation. The imagery reminds me of a Western movie?
So I hate to admit, that I somehow understand Richard W's question. I am fully aware of all the wrath I am exposing myself to.
That you haven't read them, or that Phil criticizes that they aren't insufficiently polemic, is a bit repulsive.

Even towns very near your home are suffering severely.

You can die from sudden loss of blood due to body going into shock. You do not need to loose all that much blood, and it really does not matter a hoot which part of your body is bleeding for this to happen.
This is why simple saline drip can make all the difference, and this is why preventing ambulace from attending is criminal.
Thanks, Eva, I am aware there is a problem in documenting it. I am also aware that the default setting in Israel is, the other side, lies, fakes to almost 100%.
If the femoral artery in the leg is torn open death from blood loss could occur very rapidly. If an artery is cut, blood will spray out under pressure–it isn't just slow bleeding like a superficial cut.
This kind of wound requires immediate action to stop the loss of blood (i.e. applying strong pressure against the artery above the wound) and immediate emergency care.
Please, the ISM is so full of shit its rediculous.
sword of gideon said: "Please, the ISM is so full of shit its rediculous".
Your desperation in criticizing a volunteer organization made up of human rights activists who try to expose Israeli crimes for the whole world to see, while risking their own safety and even their lives in the process, is duly noted.
Todd,
Every time I write a check to the IRS I feel guilty knowing that at least half of the money I send them will be used to finance the killing of another woman's child.
It doesn't make me feel safer knowing that my government spends more on weapons than any other country on Earth, or that we go around invading countries that have done nothing to us. It makes me feel like an accomplice in a crime. I am ashamed that I am too much of a coward to stop writing those checks.
And we can protest all we want, sign petitions, send letters to our so-called representatives but they're just laughing at us thinking, "those poor slobs think they have a democracy and that what they say matters." The only thing that matters is that we still send them our money that they use as they see fit and that makes us responsible.
As MJ said why worry about what Israel does 'in my name' when Us does worse. E.g. my recent mention of Our policy of killing families of terrorists we cant catch up to. I guess that was Cheneys idea but we shouldnt overestimate Bush.
Do I feel guilty? To some extent. The same as I feel about being a Civilized Human: its quite disgusting but I dont know how I could have avoided it. Hamlet was overwhelmed by his disgust, but I much prefer MacBeth's stoic dignity.

Ana,
I understand your point, and paying taxes to support the U.S. government makes striving for success a thorny issue. I hate my government, but I still see no reason to spend any of my time in one of its prisons.
