You Want to Moderate Israel, Phil, But Where Are the Arab Counterparts?

My friend Steve F criticizes my blog:

Phil: On your blog, you
discuss one side's distasteful actions without context or its rationale.
Israel was not formed to be an ugly aggressor.  Its actions have been
shaped by its enemies' actions, statements and societies.  See the article
below.
No one in the Arab world challengesHezbollah's rejectionist
impulse.  Is Israel still in Lebanon?  Israel is ready for peace but I
am afraid that it will not have anyone to dance with on the other side of
the equation until there are at least a handful of Arabian Phil Weisses who
exhibit a modicum of reason and understanding for those who are not like
them.  We may be waiting a while.

The Haaretz piece Steve cites includes this: "Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah said in
a recent interview that as long as Israel exists, there will be no
peace in the Middle East. "The region will not see the light of peace or any stability
because of Israel's aggressiveness and militant nature," Nasrallah
said.

Steve, a few quick responses. Remember when Golda Meir said she hated
the Palestinians for what they had made Israeli boys do? As a Jew I
feel responsible for Jewish behavior that is being approved in my name by the Jewish community. Israel covered southern Lebanon in cluster bombs. I don't see how anything the
Palestinians did can justify the killing of a 20-year-old witness by
shooting him in the legs, a report I linked earlier today.

As an
American, I often feel like you Zionists are dragging me into a
domestic situation and saying, "Look, she scratched my eyes out, I had to beat her up." And the woman did scratch the man's eyes out, and the man has clubbed the woman senseless. My two conflicting responses are: The man has more power,  I don't want either side in this frikkin mess.

What say you?
