British Jewish leadership cancels rally, speaks of ‘besieged’ people of Gaza!

[Update. Note to readers. This item seems to be based on a hoax email. Apologies.]

I know things are different across the pond, but when would the AJC, the Conference of Presidents or AIPAC ever send out something like this? From the "chief voice of British Jewry."

The Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council, in consultation with a coalition of prominent organisations in the Anglo-Jewish community, have decided to cancel the planned Israel Solidarity Rally.

This decision has been taken after intense discussions within the community, due to a feeling that such a demonstration would not be in accordance with the Board's wish to bring the conflict to an immediate conclusion. It was thought that the demonstration might be perceived as the community taking one side in the tragic war in Gaza and Israel, and might be seen as supporting Israel's military campaign.

The Board calls for an immediate ceasefire, immediate negotiations between Israel and Hamas, and for lifting the economic blockade of Gaza, in order to allow the Gazan and Israeli people to live together in peace.  There is no military solution, only a political one.  The Jewish community does not wish to be seen as a participant in the conflict, and in taking this stand we hope to be a part of the solution.

The Board stands in solidarity with the besieged and injured people of Gaza, as well as the victims of terrorism in Israel, and we oppose all violence as contrary to the tenets of the Jewish religion. We would like to reach out to the British Muslim community, as well as those of no religion who have demonstrated against Israel's military campaign-we share your anguish at the destruction and loss of life caused, and hope that our action in calling off our demonstration will be a small step towards peace.

Solidarity Rally, due to occur on Sunday 11th of January.

  1. Sorry, but no, not good enough. Canceling a rally that was going to be held is NOT equivalent to condemning the massacres being perpetrated in the name of the Jewish people by the state the terrorist existence and genocidal actions of which continue to be considered, by and large, to be legitimate by the overwhelming majority of Jews.

We know what a condemnation is, and the cancellation of the rally is akin to throwing sand in people's eyes.

A quick look at the website shows the views espoused by this "board."

And anyway, where on the website does it say the rally was canceled? I could not find it. Could you perhaps post a link?
Also, "allow the Gazan and Israeli people to live together in peace." The "Gazans" have a name. They are the PALESTINIAN people. Or does the board espouse the zionist belief that there is no such thing as a Palestinian people?

A blogger from Lebanon has a point, but Phil's point is that even this British gesture would never, never happen in the US–and that is an even more important point at this juncture, I think.

  3. Ben says:

This is completely ridiculous. The world is falling for the Palestinian scam. To those who claim that the war going on in Gaza is a Holocaust I say this: The Jews were forced into the ovens. The palestinians cook themselves willingly and for the express purpose of destroying Israel's reputation. Do not let them succeed.

  4. used to be such a nice boy says:

"The world is falling for the Palestinian scam."

Incorrect. The world's not falling for the Zionist scam anymore.

  5. Ed says:

@ Ben: "The palestinians cook themselves willingly and for the express purpose of destroying Israel's reputation."

Just ponder that statement for a minute in the current Gaza context…

…and now try to argue that Zionists aren't sociopaths.

  6. Colin Murray says:

I agree with Ben that the Israel attack on Gaza does not even remotely qualify as a holocaust. I use the little 'h' here to refer to the general definition, and reserve the big 'H' for reference to what Jews call the Shoah. There is not a shred of evidence that the Israeli government is attempting genocide. This use of hyperbolic language only serves to obscure the crimes that Israel is committing in Gaza: war crimes, crimes against peace, and crimes against humanity as defined in the four Geneva Conventions.

However Ben, it is not a 'Palestinian scam'. The Palestinians do not 'cook themselves willingly'. Hamas, and every other Palestinian group resisting Iraeli occupation have every right to defend themselves against Israeli aggression, and make no mistake, the occupation and its intensification, the starvation blockade, are acts of aggression. Directed against an innocent people, they are acts of war. Israel has refused to negotiate a final-status, or any other agreement, with Palestinians that does lead them to accept the fate of helot and de facto slave. Would you accept such a fate? They launch rockets against Israel because it is their only means to force redress for the wrongs Zionists are committing against their people. If they had not resisted, there would still be Jewish colonies in Gaza, lording it over their people and taking the lion's share of water and good farm land. If they did not resist today, they would be left to rot in their open air prison, which is correctly labeled as a concentration camp, and forgotten both by Israel and the rest of the world.

It is completely understandable why Jews escaping Europe after the Holocaust invaded Palestine and ethnically cleansed Arabs in order to create a Jewish-majority state. Note that I use the word understandable. It is also not fair to Palestinians who had absolutely nothing to do with the Holocaust. The killers were European, not Arab. It is time for the colonies outside of the 'Green Line' to be evacuated and for the occupation to end, and for Israel to make peace with its neighbors, including Palestinians.

There is great sympathy in my country, the United States, for the plight of Jews, which I personally share. However, do not be fooled into thinking that the unanimous support of our political leadership is representative of American views. Belief in the traditional Zionist narrative is disintegrating, and sympathy for Israel is collapsing at a rate proportional to exposure of Israeli crimes against innocent Palestinians. National political support is propped up by fear of AIPAC and other Zionist organizations. Fear is a highly unstable tool of governance. There will come a day when it no longer works, and not only will political support evaporate, in the wake of the vanished fear will be anger and resentment against Israel, and against the American Jewish establishment. Israel and American aggression, the latter energetically fostered by American Zionists, are a national security issue for my people, and awareness of this is spreading. If there is one thing you can be sure that the future will bring, it is a complete cessation of American political and material support, UNLESS Israel makes genuine efforts to come to a just final-status agreement with its neighbors. Most Americans, myself included, are happy to help Israel, but only voluntarily, and only on terms that do not threaten our nation.

  9. "There is not a shred of evidence that the Israeli government is attempting genocide."

What is your definition of genocide then?
Genocide does not have to be about the planned elimination of ALL the population. It could be the planned elimination of PART of the population. The idea is that killing large numbers of people — not fighters on the battlefield, but civilians — based on their ethnicity or religious beliefs, in a planned and orchestrated manner, amounts to genocide. Israeli leaders have boasted of the fact that they have been planning this assault on Gaza for over a year. Livni stated that there is no humanitarian situation in Gaza, and I am sure you don't believe that she doesn't know what the humanitarian situation is like in Gaza. In a telling remark she said: "The humanitarian situation in Gaza IS AS IT SHOULD BE." In other words, death and starvation should be the daily "intake" of the Palestinian people in Gaza. Certainly, the fact that the civilian population is locked up in the Gaza Strip with all the exit routes closed, and being bombed from the air, sea, and land, indiscriminately so, when added up with all the other facts, points to more than mere war crimes; it is indicative of an orchestrated, deliberate decimation of a large number of Palestinians merely because they are Palestinians. Certainly, the CLEARLY EXPRESSED attitude that Palestinians are cockroaches, or animals, is indicative of how much a Palestinian life is worth in the minds of the Israeli army and the Israeli population and zionists at large alike.

An Israeli professor who added his voice to those of other zionists advocating the daily killing Palestinians, referred to the Palestinians as such, and recommended the following course of action:

"When 2.5 million people live in a closed-off Gaza, it’s going to be a human catastrophe," Sofer predicted. "Those people will become even bigger animals than they are today, with the aid of an insane fundamentalist Islam. The pressure on the border is going to be awful. It’s going to be a terrible war. So, if we want to remain alive, we will have to kill and kill and kill. All day, every day."

On the other hand, is this crisis becoming one of the last nails in MSM coffin…?
Trust? Readership? Leaders? Not any more…

Siding with Israel on this particular ocassion will hurt MSM pockets more than the cumulative effect of all the wrong decisions taken in past 10 years…

How can you destroy Israel's reputation? It was in smithereens 40 years ago.

  12. delia says:

Well, this thread is going nowhere, despite Colin Murray's attempt to turn it into a useful discussion.

    I'm outta here.

  13. Ben says:

The Palestinians were a heartbeat away from independence when the Oslo Accords were signed by Yizhak Rabin and Arafat. Palestinians had all the opportunity in the world to become independent? Instead what happens? Intifada!

Hamas was voted in by the PEOPLE. The PEOPLE have been calling for the destruction of Israel for years.

    http://www.adl.org/PresRele/IslEx_61/2694_61.asp

And our own people are actively supporting the destruction of Israel. It's not "Zionism". It's survival. How quickly have you forgotten the lessons of the Jewish Holocaust at the hands of anti-semites?

Anybody who supports Hamas is supporting the destruction of an entire country. It's sick.

  14. Ben says:

    It absolutely IS a scam.

Here's what I mean by "scam":

Hamas uses human shields and they are hailed as heroes.

When Israel made phone warnings to residents to evacuate houses that were being used as weapons depots, instead of evacuating, they called Hamas, who sent mothers with babies to those very houses that were targeted by the IDF.

Hamas is CURRENTLY operating from UN schools, hospitals and are hijacking UN envoys so that when Israel attacks, it looks like Israel is attacking the UN. Bullshit.

Today, there's a report of Israel herding 100 palestinians into a house and then shelling it repeatedly, killing 24. BULLSHIT. It's all propaganda.

There is a Norwegian doctor who was being interviewed as an "objective observer" and he was claiming that there were only women and children were in the hospital. It has been shown that he has been a palestinian activist for 20 years. Male Hamas fighters are being refused medical care at hospitals so that only women and children are observed by witnesses. Women and Children are being sent deliberately to danger zones and being used as human shields.

Israel is NOT targeting Palestinian civilians and is NOT committing any type of Genocide. They are fighting an evil and insidious entity that has no scruples and will sacrifice their own children to martyrdom within a heartbeat.

And the Palestinians are the victims. It's a scam. They are victims of their own ideology of hatred and the destruction of Israel. Peace means failure for Hamas.

    Wake up guys.

  15. j says:

I cannot wrap my head around how destroying the Palestinian people could possibly benefit Israel.

A united Arab world could crush Israel with one hand.

We're broke. No more money to give away, no more weapons.

There couldn't be worse press right now. All the Eliot Engels and fellow bizarro zionist nutbags can't hide the footage of dead Palestinian children sobbed over by whoever survived the latest shelling.

And the rest of the world cringes with each fresh horror.

Israel is going to wind up with zero friends. Who will be able to stop any number of Israel's neighbors from bombing it out of existence?

Right now, it feels like a foregone conclusion.

  16. MM says:

No sources ey Ben? Guess we better just take your word for it?

I guess some people's idea of "waking up" means pretending this conflict started on December 27, 2008.
