In the ‘Wall Street Journal’! (‘Israel Is Committing War Crimes’)

More seals bursting. George Bisharat in the Wall Street Journal. As Leon Hadar observes, Next Commentary will be publishing Chomsky.

Israel then broke the truce on Nov. 4, raiding the Gaza Strip and
killing a Palestinian. Hamas retaliated with rocket fire; Israel then
killed five more Palestinians. In the following days, Hamas continued
rocket fire — yet still no Israelis died. Israel cannot claim
self-defense against this escalation, because it was provoked by
Israel's own violation.

And here is the answer to Michael Walzer's just war theory:

Israel's American-made F-16s and Apache helicopters have destroyed
mosques, the education and justice ministries, a university, prisons,
courts and police stations. These institutions were part of Gaza's
civilian infrastructure. And when nonmilitary institutions are
targeted, civilians die. Many killed in the last week were young police
recruits with no military roles. Civilian employees in the Hamas-led
government deserve the protections of international law like all
others. [stirring] Hamas's ideology — which employees may or may not share — is
abhorrent, but civilized nations do not kill people merely for what
they think.
[beautiful] Deliberate attacks on civilians that lack strict military necessity are war crimes.

  1. David B. says:

I truly never thought I'd see the day that such an article would appear in the WSJ — or any mainstream U.S. paper for that matter.

Do you have any information about serious, principled boycott efforts?

  2. Jim Haygood says:

I second what David B. said. The WSJ is the house journal of neocon ideology. For glasnost to penetrate even into the benighted caverns of Israel's leading business daily suggests that the earth has moved.

  3. americangoy says:

    Interesting.

Didn't Rupert Murdoch buy WSJ lately?

If so, something like this HAD to have been green lighted by him personally.

    Shift in US media propaganda?

  4. citizen says:

Hope so. How about moving more earth by boycotting Caterpillar Company? Hard to imagine farmers doing that. Caterpillar's stance is that it does not condone misuse of its tractors. That old campaign needs follow up new blood, asking the CEO, "Is this your product here, demolishing yet another Palestinian home? How many do you have to see before you put outright conditions in all your sales contracts?

  5. citizen2 says:

Don't forget to do publicity on such a follow-up. That worked somewhat as to designer sneakers manufactured by little kids…

  6. littlehorn says:

I had a hard time believing that it was actually there. Incredible. Chomsky will have to search and burn all his copies of "Manufacture of Consent" for what remains of his life.

  7. Olive says:

George Bisharat is an Arab of course he is going to say Israel is committing war crimes.

  8. citizen says:

OIive is a jew of course and she is going to say Israel is innocent and only dutifully protecting its citizens. Olive is also the person who said in a prior comment that she thinks jews should shed Western culture for the higher Zionist culture which clearly demarcates who is evil, who is good. Is Olive a mouthpiece for a bought and sold banal goy Politician who's cheap ragging is killing us all?

ALL Hail our K-Mart US politicians. No decent Jew would allow their daughter to marry one of those. But they are good enablers, the agenda being, Jews survive at all costs, especially at the cost of low class goys who join the US Military and US Congress for their own personal ends.

  9. littlehorn says:

Olive, Mubarak is an Arab, of course he…uhhh wait. I'll try again. The King of Jordan is an Arab, of course — ah shit ! Forget it.
