Organized Jewish community seems crouched, fearful over p.r. disaster

The
Jewish Community Relations Bureau/American Jewish Committee in Kansas
City has organized an emergency meeting tomorrow night. The appeal begins on a defensive note:

Due to the escalation of Israel’s efforts to reduce the Hamas rocket fire from Gaza,
there will be an emergency Israel community event on Tuesday January 6
at 7:00pm at the Jewish Community Campus (social hall).  We are
grateful that Deputy Consul General of Israel to the Midwest, The Honorable Gershon Kedar will travel to Kansas City
to brief us on behalf of the government of the State of Israel, as well
as our brothers and sisters involved in this situation.  Please let
others know of this event, as there is little time for publicity.

I smell fear. These people aren't afraid of anything the Gazans can do, no– they are the fish in a barrel. They fear public opinion. Andrew Sullivan saying it's not just. The most prophetic piece about the Gaza slaughter was Benny Morris's, in the Times, when he said that Israel feels threatened by international opinion. So: go out and destroy Palestinians. And international opinion just gets worse. Morris wrote about "apocalyptic" feelings. To me it feels like the last hurrah for a generation's Holocaust fears. The emotional bottom-line for so many in my parents' generation is: They want to destroy the Jews! Those fears legitimize the destruction of Arabs in retaliation for the Nazis. Sullivan:

The loss
of life this past week has been huge – far greater than any other stage
of the conflict, and out of all proportion to the damage Hamas has
inflicted on Israel. In terms of casualties, we are talking about
ratios of roughly a hundred to one. That makes this far from a close call morally. There is a
reason, in other words, for many Europeans' horror. This is an
extremely one-sided war, with one side essentially being attacked at
will in a way that cannot avoid large numbers of civilian deaths.
