Israel manhandles Europeans at border. Kerfuffle. Double standard

Frightening country. Do we even know what Israel is? The other day Israeli soldiers fired warning shots toward the French consul-general and his colleagues as they returned from visiting Gaza. Israelis held the group up for six hours, too, at the crossing. French are upset, lodging a complaint. Writes Mohammad of Vancouver:

"Subconscious message: How dare your soldiers make us wait 6 hours behind a crossing and greet our civilized EUROPEAN delegation with warning shot. Please keep this kind of treatment for Arabs."

But Mohammad, the French do protest Arabs' treatment, don't they?

Maybe once in a blue moon, but they never summon the ambassador for treating people like this at the border. If they did the Israeli ambassador would have to rent a room in the ministry of foreign affairs. This kind of harsh treatment is saved for when Europeans are mistreated at the border.

The hatred in Israel for Europe has always been there, but now that Israel is being universally condemned for the Gaza massacre it is coming to the surface. Neve Gordon and Patrick Cockburn have recent articles on how the nation is coming unhinged. The hatred of outsiders is especially strong among the youth. This is a situation that should be publicized here in the US — very few seem to be aware of virulent political mood that is sweeping that nation.

Universally? The total number of world wide protesters still doesn't come close to the number of Jews who marched because of Sabra.

The world hates the jews for no good reason. Just ask Mamet. Or, for that matter, ask any Jewish recorder of Jewish History.

  4. Nancy O says:

Actually, to be more precise, any jewish recorder of history who is not viewed as self-hating by jewish power.

True but irrelevant to the point. But that was an admirable reaction by the Israeli people. That happened 27 years ago — I am afraid that the people have changed. The racists attitudes of the people, especially the youth is much more virulent today. I think polling supports this.

Irrelevant. Almost half a million Israelis marched to condemn Sharon for allowing Arabs to murder Arabs.

Yet you claim universal condemnation for the events in Gaza.

I must assume you are incorrect.

Breaking news: France announces Navy, Air Force to blockade Israel after Consul General killed by IDF. Israel refuses to apologise; says Hamas used delegation as 'human shields'

Germany, Spain, Holland, Sweden, others pledge support for French action; British opposition parties, media urge government to act with Europe to end mass murder in Gaza, settlements in West bank

US reaction mixed as economic chaos grips nation; China and Russia threaten further economic destabilisation if US supports Israel militarily; media urges decisive strikes upon European positions; massive demonstrations at AIPAC HQ; Israeli embassy evacuated; Jewish businesses close 'temporarily'. President Obama calls for 'calm'.

PARIS: French President Nicholas Sarkozy, enraged by what he calls the 'murder' of his representative in Israel by Israeli troops and by Israel's refusal to admit error or apologise, has directed French warships to the Meditteranean and fighter planes to allied countries neighbouring Israel. Mr Sarkozy declares that 'the time has come to root out this canker that threatens us all'. Several other European countries have pledged support, while turmoil grips the US as the stock market plunges 30% overnight…

Oh, sorry – just having a particularly nasty counterfactual, didn't realise you were there. Perhaps I can get a lotion or something to clear it up.

Interesting nightmare, deliberately plunging the world into war while ensuring Jews get the blame. Cute. I may do up a screen play. I'll give you credit.

  9. citizen says:

But pure fiction. The real nightmare goes on in reality 24/7. Plunging the world into endless conflict while ensuring non-jews get the blame. Cute. chris berel wrote the reality show. Shouldn't we hold him accountable like we did Julius Streicher?

  10. chris berel says:

Sure, hold me accountable. But then you'll find out that you're absolutely powerless and irrelevant.

A better speller, of course, but utterly meaningless in the long run.
