things are tough all over. really

Some drama on the home front today. The magazine my wife works for went under just before noon. Domino. Fun smart magazine, 4 years old, killed by the recession. She was handling condolence calls all day, then went to bed. So that makes two of us in this house, trained on print, watching print vanish. She's been doing the lion's share around here. Guess that's gonna change, huh. The internet's going to be monetized, I'm going to be rolling in it. I've been trying to be upbeat all day. I've got an apocalyptic narrative too, but I'll save that for tomorrow, assuming we're all still here. (Phil Weiss)

  1. Dan Kelly says:

I'm sorry Phil. I've been without a regular job for some time now, as I told you in my email. We'll all get through this.

It would help if the Obama administration would halt the imperial wars, but I'm not holding my breath. How are we going to pay for it? Start the printing presses? Send IOU's in lieu of Social Security, a la California? Paul Craig Roberts wrote an article today addressing this very subject:

"The financial damage inflicted on Americans by their own government is as great as would be expected from foreign conquest. While Washington “protected” us from terrorists by fighting pointless wars abroad, the US economy collapsed.

How can President Obama even think about fighting wars half way around the world while California cannot pay its bills, while Americans are being turned out of their homes, while, as Business Week reports, retirees will work throughout their retirement (which assumes that there will be jobs), while careers are being destroyed and stores and factories shuttered.

Americans are facing tremendous unemployment and hardship. Obama doesn’t have another dollar to spend on Bush’s wars.

Taxpayers are busted. They cannot stand another day of being milked by the military-security complex. The US government is paying private mercenaries more by the day than the monthly checks it is providing to Social Security retirees.

    This is insanity.

The banksters robbed us twice. First it was our home and stock values. Then the government rewarded the banksters for their misdeeds by bailing out the banksters, not their victims, and putting the cost on the taxpayers’ books.

The government has also robbed the taxpayers of $3 trillion dollars to fight its wars. About $600 billion are out of pocket costs, and the rest is on the taxpayers’ books.

When foreign creditors look at the debt piled on the taxpayers’ books, they don’t see a good credit risk.

Washington is so accustomed to ripping off the taxpayers for the benefit of special interests that the practice is now in the DNA. While bailouts are being piled upon bailouts, wars are being piled upon wars.

Before Obama gets in any deeper, he must ask his economic team where the money is coming from. When he finds out, he needs to tell the rest of us."

my sympathies to both of you. however, as the luckless ex-CIA agent Harvey Newbegin said in Len Deighton's "Billion Dollar Brain":

"When winter comes, you find out which trees are the evergreens."

That's a shame Phil. Keep your chin up – I believe your status as one of those in the van of the sea-change will stand you in good stead in the (hopefully) not too distant future. Americans may soon have a much increased appetite for truth, and an appreciation of those who tell it.

Things really are tough – even John Robb at Global Guerillas (think Kunstler without the Zionism, with added practical optimism and expertise galore) was touting for jobs yesterday. He must have got something, because he has wiped the post.

One of my other heroes, Justin Raimondo at Antiwar, is always threatening to fold due to lack of funds.

To think, one hundredth of one percent of what Hank Paulson or Dick Fuld is worth would keep the three of you going for twelve months.

    Phil.

I am really sorry to hear that. [I loved Domino.] My heart goes out to both of you. Phil, start reading link to

Glen is right Phil…hang in any way you can. When things turn and they will, you will be positioned for the new journalist that is going to be demanded by the public.
The shakeout in your and your wife's fields had to come, but once built back it will be more in your favor. You just have to get from here to there.

  7. Sherry Long says:

    Phil:

I appreciate your writings and your courage. I made a donation. Let people know that you need help keeping the blog going.

  8. Richard Witty says:

    Good luck man.

You know, both I and my wife lost our jobs in the last three months as well. My wife also due to a publication closing.

  9. Dan Kelly says:

Best wishes to you and your wife as well, Richard.

  10. Eva Smagacz says:

Richard and Phil, I am very sorry.

  11. Me says:

Hey that's a good idea MRW.

Phil, you really should publish a book covering every aspect you write about here. I would surely order it from Amazon. There's revenue potential, and of course, donate people!

  12. Glenn Condell says:

Excellent idea MRW. I'd buy it and spread the word down here. Will donate too (next pay!)

Sad to hear about you and your wife Richard – all best.

  13. Richard Witty says:

    Thank you kindly.

  14. citizen says:

I hope all those who've lost their jobs here have some better luck
soon. It's really bad in my locality.

  15. MRW. says:

    Richard.

I'm really sorry to hear that too, Richard. It must be gripping you with fear some nights, probably washes over you when you least expect it. And it's really tough when it hits both in a marriage. Any fights are the circumstances talking. Been there. Please be well.

  16. Susie Kneedler says:

    Phil,
I'm really sorry, too, and do believe, Phil, that the work you're doing with this blog is invaluable and the best, most patriotic, effort possible–both for our country and for the Palestinians, as well as for (if they only knew it) the Israelis.

Thanks very much to your wife for her support of your incomparable project, and my Best to her.

    Dan,
I feel for you, too, and want you to know how much I learn from your perspective–on top of all the superb essays you add to the debate.

Richard, Thanks for letting us know, for even though I don't sympathize with your views, I do sympathize with you and your wife. I agree with Mr. W.: that can be a hard place, and I hope you and your wife are well.

P.S. I, too, chipped in to Mondoweiss as much as I could afford now in this hard time.

  17. Scorpio says:

how do i get around this paypal thing and just send a credit card payment? otherwise, you need to take names and addresses and ask folks for a check

  18. ahmed says:

Sorry to hear that. My SO got laid off last month. These are tough times.

Scorpio, if you click the paypal button, it does give you a credit card option.

  19. Mohammad says:

go to paypal and pay using your visa its easy. Let's all help phil. Are there more wealthy ani zionist people out there that can help? this blog and its sheer volume on a daily basis has to continue on.

  20. Dan Kelly says:

Thank you Susie, and the same to you :)

  21. chris berel says:

Geeze, I'm making more money then ever> My SO just got a raise. She's almost done with her doctorate. I invested in oil then cashed out at $125 a barrel. I boaught JRCC at 4 and sold at 60, I boought Ford at 1 and sold at 3. I'm now buying homes in Florida.

    Sucks being me.

  22. grunt says:

Way to go chris berel–did you that before or after you served your hitch in the US military? Work your way through community college?
Atta boy! We need more role models like you here in the USA.

  23. Jack G says:

Phil, really sorry about your household job situation. This blog you've got is one of the most significant on the whole web. Write the book; kind, wise, sensible viewpoints on this issue are few. The Middle East situation may get a lot more crazy before it turns. People are, and will more so hunger for a true account of the situation.

  24. chris Berel says:

You mean after I served my 20 years. Yes, Grunt, the USA does need more role models such as myself.

But I'm too modest for that.

I'll content myself with posting truth to power.

  25. chris Berel says:

After all, I have enough money.

  26. Rowan says:

After all, I have enough money.

Only until the GIYUS management decide to replace you here with someone more effective!

  27. Me says:

    Ignore this Berel guy.

  28. chris berel says:

Do you really think someone needs to be more effective against the pro-islamist shakers posting here?

  29. Grunt says:

Hey chris, which branch of the US Military were you in? When? What was your MOS? I'm not talking about Zionist summer camp in the Catskills.

  30. chris berel says:

No MOS. Nuc Engineer. Submarine service. Was buddies with Jimmy Carter. Not really buddies but he did ride my boat during an ORSE. Stole my bunk. But I was pretty Junior (inside joke) at the time.
