Slumdog’s Muslim protagonist

Just saw "Slumdog Millionaire." Loved it. Very Dickensian. One comment: It interests me that the movie's hero, Jamal Malik, is a Muslim. And so the world and the Motion Picture academy are celebrating a Muslim Oliver Twist. That's helpful. And yes I wonder if Obama's Muslim roots played a role here. The world is slipping out of Martin Kramer, Daniel Pipes, and Anne Bayefsky's hands.

    What??

In any case I thought the movie was fairly good and the fact that the hero was Moslem, with no overt political stereotypes, was very positive.

Too bad Kite Runner didn't get this kind of exposure. Much better film and one that explores similar themes as does Slumdog. In this one the Moslem heroes were victims of the Taliban.

  3. 'Hindu terrorism' debate grips India

By Zubair Ahmed, BBC News, Nasik, western India – Page last updated Friday, 21 November 2008

A new and highly controversial phrase has entered the sometimes cliche-riddled Indian press: "Hindu terrorism".
As with the term "Islamic terrorism" and "Christian fundamentalism", this latest addition to the media lexicon is highly emotive.
It was in the aftermath of the 29 September bomb blast in the predominantly Muslim town of Malegaon in the western state of Maharashtra that the term "Hindu terrorism" or "saffron terrorism" came to be used widely.
That was because the state police's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested 10 Hindus following the blasts and has said that it wants to arrest several more…..

India uncovers Hindu terror group that carried out bombings blamed on Islamists

At least 10 people, including monk and army officer, held

By Andrew Buncombe in Delhi – Sunday, 23 November 2008

India is in something of a state of shock after learning from official sources that its first Hindu terror cell may have carried out a series of deadly bombings that were initially blamed on militant Muslims. The revelation is forcing the country to consider some difficult questions.

At least 10 people have been arrested in connection with several bomb blasts in the Muslim-dominated town of Malegaon in the western state of Maharashtra in September, which left six people dead. But reports suggest that police believe the cell may also have carried out a number of previous attacks, including last year's notorious bombing of a cross-border train en route to Pakistan, which killed 68 people. Among the alleged members of the cell are a serving army officer and a Hindu monk…

"The world is slipping" from the hands of Martin Kramer, Daniel Pipes, and Anna Bayevsky? Their grasp is nothing compared with the reach of the duo Thomas Friedman happily describes as our new "Super Sub-Secretaries of State:" (NYT 3.1.09)

"…the main theaters of conflict where the parties are either failing states with multiple power centers — Afghanistan, Pakistan and Palestine — or strong states with governments so fractious and hydra-headed that they border on paralyzed — Israel and Iran. The political struggles in these societies are so virulent today that until they are defused, it will be very difficult to make any deals between them. That is why you need sub-secretaries of state.

So George Mitchell is, in effect, “Super Sub-Secretary of State for Nurturing a Coherent Palestinian Authority and a Coherent Israeli Negotiating Position So That the Two Might One Day Be Able to Strike a Deal Again.” Richard Holbrooke is “Super Sub-Secretary of State for Bringing Coherence to the Afghan and Pakistan Governments So That They Can One Day Be Internally Stable and United Against the Taliban and Al Qaeda.” And Dennis Ross is “Super Sub-Secretary of State for Amassing Global Leverage on the Incomprehensibly Byzantine Iranian Government So That It Will Terminate Its Nuclear Weapons Program.”

What was under the table yesterday is over the table today–only the cloth has a new design.

    Obama is Christian.

I'm sure y'll hated the movie Osama, about the little Afghani girl that disguised herself as a boy during the Taliban takeover.

Let's just sweep that ugly truth under the bed.

syvanen, this is obviously not the original Jim Haygood. If "Jim Haygood" didn't feign his basic positions to attract interest to be later turned into a propaganda tool. Which feels a bit stretched and much to complex for our Israel hardliners.

Think again. Would the original Jim Haygood mail a Daniel Pipes style of yellow press anti-Muslim smear-piece to a film with this storyline?

Indeed, a great movie! I love the storyline and the characters.
