1963: ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’…. 2009: ‘Eid-eh Shoma Mobarak’

A day after The Times underplayed Obama's video outreach to the Iranians, the newspaper of record gets the significance of his Nowruz (Zoroastrian new year) statement. Huge. Death knell to the neocons. Obama concluded the statement, “Thank you, and Eid-eh Shoma Mobarak.” I'm surprised people aren't making the connection to Kennedy's famous Ich bin ein Berliner declaration of 1963. That was a cold war declaration. This declaration marks the beginning of the end of the war of civilizations…

I wonder if it is so. I hope yes, but the drones and bombs continue in Pakistan, the unmentioned, unmourned massacre of the Palestinians is recent, their ethnic cleansing and suppression continues… money to the military increases… the representatives to Iran are not well chosen… the economic blockade of Iran is tightening… he remains too frightened to answer the question of Israeli nukes honestly… he throws Freeman overboard.

Words of import, or merely words?

  2. Jim Haygood says:

It's nice to see that, after an absence of a few months, Barak Obama's dick is now firmly back in Phil's mouth. To each his own, but the problem with being a Change/Hope fellator, is it tends to block your vision! Obama is all about words. Period. That's why idiots like Phil supported him–because they are idiots. The Iranians, for all their faults, are not quite so naive.

obama is just a figure-head, and for the people behind him, the Irish adage might apply : "Whatever you say, say nothing."

I am offended by Jim Haygood's post, and request that he be suspended.

  5. LeaNder says:

Somehow I doubt the real Jim Haygood is insulting Phil like that. Remember: "My man". He surely was critical of Obama but using the pornographic imagery for Phil? That is more the specialty of the group that is occasionally spoofing "Jim Haygood". Don't you agree, doppler?

Saying 'Happy New Year' in Farsi is hardly 'Ich Bin Ein Berliner' – (I am a doughnut).

  7. LeaNder says:

Richard, except that this kind of "Berliner" in Berlin is called Pfannkuchen (strictly pancake).

When I once made this joke on the net, nobody knew it. But now it's even on Wikipedia.

  8. Observer says:

That was not Jim Haygood. It was the same old imposter, ID thief Bill Pearlman, who's first pen name was SOG and who's most consistent pen name since last January has been Chris Berel; he also uses a great variety of other pen names on this blog. Jim Haygood good name has been stolen most repeatedly so far this year.

We should be able to register that will help stop ppl from stealing IDs, but those that dont want to register should be allowed the option to post anonymously.

I was 18 years old when Kennedy made his speech. I was a 50 calibur machine gunner in the back of a truck, protecting Kennedy. I don;t rubber stamp AIPAC and its agenda.
