Weiss:
"As my tipster says, "The amount of lying and self-denial is breathtaking and pathological."

"Anderson had joined a protest against Israel's separation barrier, which cuts off Naalin from 300 acres of olive groves. In the past year, four Palestinians were killed in Naalin by Israeli troops quelling weekly stone-throwing protests against the barrier, according to Israeli human rights group B'tselem."

Either Weiss or B"tselem is lying.
It's not a good idea to go to a foreign country and get involved in stone throwing demonstrations.

So the wrong here is the stone-throwing. Palestinians should never react in any violent way to the continued theft of their land and property and fragmentation of their society/violation of their right to self-determination.

The wrong here is the stone-throwing, according to this fascist scumbag Julian.

It's not a good idea for the US to provide aid to those who would attack non-violent demonstrators and then lie about it or refuse to fully investigate.

"It's not a good idea to go to a foreign country and get involved in stone throwing demonstrations."

Is that right?

Maybe it's also not such a good idea to go to a foreign country with billion upon billions of US dollars, as well as military equipment, to get involved in a "stone throwing demonstration". Absent that see what kind of stone throwing demo your shitty little country will devolve into.

Either Weiss or B"tselem is lying.

OR, much more likely, the Courant is incorrectly quoting B'Tselem, or choosing to slant its coverage of what B'Tselem has said.

Here is the statement directly from Btselem:

18 March 2009: Security forces using tear-gas canisters as weapons

B'Tselem today requested the Judge Advocate General, Brig. Gen. Avichai Mandelblit, to immediately clarify to security forces that it is absolutely forbidden to directly aim tear-gas canisters, including extended-range type canisters, at demonstrators in the West Bank. Firing of this kind has already resulted in injuries, some grave, to dozens of Palestinians and Israeli and foreign citizens. B'Tselem also called on the JAG to conduct a thorough and effective investigation into cases in which there is a suspicion that this prohibition has been breached, and bring the persons responsible to justice for their misdeeds, including the officers who gave the orders or turned a blind eye to the illegal firing.

On 13 March, a Border Police officer fired an extended-range type tear-gas canister that struck Tristan Anderson, an American citizen, during a demonstration in Ni’lin. B'Tselem’s investigation reveals that the police officer fired the canister directly at Anderson from 60 meters away, even though Anderson had not thrown stones and had not endangered the police officers. The grenade struck him in the forehead, fracturing his skull and injuring the front lobe of his brain. It is still too early to determine the extent of the damage.

This is yet another case in which security forces have fired tear-gas canisters directly at demonstrators, injuring them. In recent weeks, B'Tselem has requested law-enforcement agencies to investigate three such cases, one involving a 13-year-old boy. B'Tselem has extensive video footage of police officers and soldiers firing tear-gas canisters directly at demonstrators.

In response to the injury to Anderson, the IDF Spokesperson informed Ha’aretz that, “Based on the field inquiry conducted after the incident, the means to disperse demonstrations was used in accordance with the procedures.” This response is surprising, given that B’tselem knows of testimonies by security forces indicating that orders regarding the use of tear-gas launchers prohibit shooting directly at the target.

In the letter, B'Tselem emphasized that tear-gas is intended to be non-lethal. Firing of tear-gas canisters at a short distance, directly at a person, turns the canisters themselves into a missile of sorts. Extended-range type tear-gas canisters, recently brought into use in the West Bank, are even more dangerous, as they move at a very high speed and are heavier, thus causing much greater injury.

Therefore, permitting the firing of tear-gas grenades directly at persons, whether by express command or by turning a blind eye, endangers human life and conveys a message of disrespect for the lives and bodily integrity of Palestinians and other demonstrators.

Soldiers carrying out policing actions must do everything in their power to prevent injury to civilians. For this reason, it is forbidden to fire at civilians, unless the soldiers are in real, imminent, life-threatening danger, and where other means to cope with the danger do not exist.

http://www.btselem.org/English/Firearms/20090318_Firing_of_Tear_Gaz_at_Demonstrators.asp

Complete with two videos at the link above of IDF soldiers shooting tear gas canisters directly at protesters. No stone throwing in either case, just tear gas canisters shot directly at protesters.

More indications of the Courant's bias and slant:

"Anderson had joined a protest against Israel's separation barrier, which cuts off Naalin from 300 acres of olive groves."

No mention that the 300 acres of olive groves are part of Ni'ilin village, and owned by Palestinians who are now prohibited from tending and harvesting their trees.

"Israel says the barrier prevents Palestinian attackers infiltrating into Israel. Palestinians say it's a land grab because it juts into the West Bank."

As mentioned in an earlier post, there is no mention in the Courant that the ICC and others have deemed the barrier is an illegal land grab, and nowhere does it acknowledge that Israel has confiscated Palestinian land in order to build it.

Neither does it mention that, according to Israeli officials, upwards of one thousand Palestinians cross the separation barrier into Israel weekly, in order to look for work there. So it is not an effective barrier against attacks. It is only effective at impoverishing and harassing Palestinians. See here: http://lawrenceofcyberia.blogs.com/news/2007/09/one-thousand-tw.html

And BTW, Lawrence of Cyberia has done a wonderful series of posts on the background to the IDF T-shirts. http://lawrenceofcyberia.blogs.com/news/

What do the Corries and the Andersons have in common? Kids who they allow to play in war zones. Kids who think it's a grand idea to throw rocks from the West Bank at Israeli soldiers in Israel defending the separation fence (or play in an area where homes are being bulldozed. (And where the bulldozer drivers, to prevent rocks and bullets hitting them, have a metal shield that covers their windshield providing minimal visibility).

Tristan could simply have stayed at Berkeley, where he was arrested for spending 21 MONTHS (!!!!) tree-sitting in protest of the University daring to rip up some trees from the campus that it owns. The Anderson's son spent 21 MONTHS sitting in a tree - they should be very proud of him. Really, the Corries and Andersons have no one to blame but themselves for the tragic events befalling their children.

By the way, Tristan wasn't injured by a bullet as one might infer when reading them say that Israel must take full responsibility for the "shooting of our son". No, he was hit by the tear gas canister that was being used to dispel the rock throwers. I don't blame his parents for shifting the responsibility for this situation off of their shoulders and their son's - but, come on, this wasn't a tree-sitting protest - Tristan amped it up a notch. The good news is that if you are crazy enough to sit in a tree for 21 MONTHS, a head injury shouldn't have any noticeable effect on you.

By the way, Tristan wasn't injured by a bullet as one might infer when reading them say that Israel must take full responsibility for the "shooting of our son". No, he was hit by the tear gas canister that was being used to dispel the rock throwers. I don't blame his parents for shifting the responsibility for this situation off of their shoulders and their son's – but, come on, this wasn't a tree-sitting protest – Tristan amped it up a notch. The good news is that if you are crazy enough to sit in a tree for 21 MONTHS, a head injury shouldn't have any noticeable effect on you.
