After the volcano, in Tonga

Tonga2
I have a weakness for Tonga stories because I spent a lot of time in the island nation writing a book about a murder in the Peace Corps. I’m sure you saw photos of that underwater volcano blowing last week. It was some distance from the shore of the uninhabited island of Hunga Ha’apai, and its lava spill has extended the island. My friend Dave Wyler sent along these photos of the aftermath, shot by Isa Menzies from a plane. Tours have started, at $200 a pop by air, $400 for a boat ride (Hunga Ha’apai is 40 miles from Nuku’alofa).
