‘Waltz with Bashir’ animator takes on the siege of Gaza

Yoni Goodman, a main animator for Waltz with Bashir, has created the short movie above for the Israeli organization Gisha. A spokesperson for Gisha has said that "Closed Zone" is meant to "cause the viewer to feel empathy for the people of Gaza and see them as they are - a million and a half people who only want to live out their ambitions and dreams, something they cannot do because of their ability to move freely."

You can watch an interview with Goodman about the making of "Closed Zone" here. Although Bashir director Ari Folman always seemed to dodge questions about the war in Gaza, Goodman was driven by it. Goodman explains, "The issue was always important in my opinion, meaning the issue of the closure. The war made this project a mission for me."

Do you think the history of Hamas terrorist attacks on civilians, nail-bombs in cafes, shelling of civilian towns, enhanced Gaza residents having more freedom of movement, or restricted it?

The five Elements of the Crowd Mind

The Five Elements of the Crowd Mind

Howard Bloom in his book Global Brain – which traces that brain from the big bang to the beginnings of bacterial life on earth to our current times –, mostly following physicist Eshel Ben-Jacob, lists the following elements in regards to how the “social learning machine” does its thing… like for instance bacteria, or humanity:

    1. Conformity enforcers
    2. Diversity generators
    3. Inner-judges
    4. Resource shifters
    5. Intergroup tournaments

Sara Wampler in her review of the book explains*:

Conformity enforcers ensure that groups maintain enough similarities to actually function as a group. These “enforcers” are group members who, like the bully on the playground or the informant in a police state, demand obedience to some behavioral norm in exchange for protection from harm. In the best sense, conformity enforcers encourage unity and the pursuit of normalization; in the worst sense, enforcers stifle creativity and destroy deviants. These enforcers are balanced by another element: the “diversity generators.” These individuals each test a new hypothesis of the communal mind, exploring possibilities that conformity enforcers would ignore. They “spawn variety” and open paths to new developments. Generally, diversity generators seem overwhelmingly positive; however, they require some amount of balance, or the individuals lose their connection to the group. When too many members fail to identify with and protect the group, the group dies, and is thus removed from the “global brain.” So, some amount of conformity is required to ensure that the diversity generators do not diversify to the point of their group’s destruction.

    Dear Richard Witty:
Was there already a near-complete closure of Gaza long before Hamas came to power? Were the borders of Gaza opened during months of quiet?

Typical pretentious jewish pseudo-intellectual bullshit, made possible by inordinate influence over publishing houses.

By the way, the video would be better without the music.

Movement into Israel by Gazans requires a total cessation of the terror war. And that war began in '87, really, although the first total closure of the Territories wasn't until '92-'93. Gazans can still get limited access to Israeli medical facilities, despite the suicide bomb plot against Soroka's emergency room.

"Quiet" never came to pass, not with a Fateh government in Gaza, not with a Hamas government, although some Israelis THOUGHT it would, post-withdrawal. Do not become dependent on people you are trying to kill, and then tell them you're going to continue to try to kill them no matter what, and then try it.

Yoni Goodman is a sanctimonious fool, and the female Gisha rep is a sanctimonious American fool with a barely-concealed American accent. Shouldn't she be in Brooklyn, by your lights?

  7. the suicide bomb plot against Soroka's emergency room

    - do give us a source for that, it sounds like the plot-line for a hollywood movie, and probably that is exactly what it is.

  8. MM says:

    Do not become dependent

Yes, all the Palestinians ever wanted was for their land to be taken from them, and their villages ransacked and terrorized, in an insidious gambit to end up on the Israeli dole.

It's the Protocols of the Elders of Palestine.

Eurosabra, I assume you read Hebrew. Tell me what you think of of this post.

  10. RE: 'Waltz with Bashir' animator takes on the siege of Gaza

ME: Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! But might this have cost 'Waltz with Bashir' an Oscar for 'Best Foreign Film'? "Enquiring minds want to know."

JO-ANN MORT @ TPM CAFE: "…Some columnists are suggesting that Hollywood prefers its Jews as victims, even as Holocaust stories–if so, that's tragic.

But it's also not surprising because there is a continuing disconnect between how Israelis view themselves and how Americans view Israelis, and especially how American Jews view Israelis. Even in our culture, this problem continues to permeate…"

Hamas, witty, was born out of the Palestinian will to survive in the face of jewish terror and starvation policies.
