‘Times of London’: Reported Netanyahu deal on settlement expansion could turn West Bank over to Hamas

Last week we picked up Haaretz reports of a "secret deal" between Netanyahu and Lieberman to continue construction of a colony east of Jerusalem, known as E-1, that would all but bisect the West Bank.  The Times of London has picked up the same story, showing how the expansion of Ma'aleh Adnumim would cut the putative Arab capital, East Jerusalem, off from the West Bank and pretty much do in any prayer for the two-state solution. And other political consequences:

Critics said that building a combined Jewish settlement and national park in
the hills of E1 would cut the West Bank in two. And blocking mainly Arab East
Jerusalem from the West Bank it would make it impossible for the Palestinians to
have that side of the disputed city as their capital.

Khalil Shikiaki, a leading Palestinian political analyst, said: .“Failure to
respond in an effective manner could lead to the collapse of the nationalist
camp [the Fatah-led branch of Palestinian politics] My guess is, confronted with
this development, the nationalist camp would probably support violence. Given
the current tends I think of this as a potential trigger to major clashes.”

That view was backed by a senior Western diplomat, who feared that developing
E1, which the Bush Administration urged against, may encourage Hamas to try to
take over the West Bank.

Any idea when the American press is going to catch up with this nullification of our policy?

  1. This is bad, but an attack on Iran would be worse.

Obama must find it in him to pull Bibi's choke chain.

There is a cruel blindness among the Israeli leadership as they continue to ignore the humanity of the Palestinians.

They cut any contiguity away from native inhabitants and hem them into unnatural spaces.A people are left without what land was theirs and are deprived of their future.

The domesticanimals of the Israelis are treated with tenderness.
The neighbours are lambs for the slaughter.

By the way, it may be worth noting that the Jewish press always pre-emptively spins any Jewish aggression into a fear that there will be a reprisal:

Anyone know what % of Israeli news readers actually read Haartze?

  8. Rowan says:

lurker, the hebrew edition of haaretz contains a lot of stuff that isn't in the english edition.

  9. Citizen says:

Yeah, I know, Rowan; it didn't hurt that you reminded me of that–but, my question remains, how many Israelis read haaretz? Do you have a clue? I am curious as I read it was like 5% of the Israeli news reading public. In a way I am trying to indirectly discern how easy it is for the USA congress to bank
on the USA public not being informed on the I-P scenario.
