The latest spin on this is that he was shot with a live bullet, OK. but it came from something called a 'roger rifle' that fires special non-lethal low-velocity bullets. That's why it killed him.

Haaretz also noted in their report that the Beliin demonstration was NOT a non-violent one. "The purpose of civil disobedience is to evoke a response." Throwing rocks is not non-violent civil disobedience.

I think opinion in the U.S. is even more uninformed that opinion in Israel. If Israel does well, American Jews feel good about themselves; if Israel is not doing so well, American Jews don't feel so good, and the comments from these young folks reflect that insecurity. Anyone who has been paying attention at all knows the parameters of a final settlement of the Israel – Palestine argument. Israel will probably be like the U.S. is. It will do the right thing, but only after it's tried everything else.
