Right. I don't think MRW or any else here would dispute the longstanding presence of a (sometimes relatively small, but nonetheless very real) Jewish population in Israel/Palestine. The point is that the long time presence of an Arab Palestinian population actually needs to be demonstrated, because denial of its existence was used to justify or obscure the dispossession of a large segment of the population that existed in the area before 1948. You know, the old "land without a people…" myth and all that. It is important to debunk that idea as a step toward facing up to the tragic history of 1948. See, for example, the work of Israeli historian Benny Morris in "The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited."
