Tensions escalated Tuesday as Lebanese military forces warned residents against approaching Israeli outposts along the shared border.
Lebanese security officials said they detained as many as 10 people they claim were plotting attacks on peacekeepers with the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon.

Lebanese officials say at least nine of those suspects were Arab nationals from foreign countries who were plotting attacks on Lebanese targets abroad.

UNIFIL peacekeepers last week were involved in a skirmish with demonstrators who were protesting an investigation linked to the explosion of a weapons depot that Israel claims belonged to Hezbollah.

Hezbollah, through its al-Manar news service, says the Israeli military has sent reinforcements to the border, telling its soldiers to "open fire" on anyone attempting to cross the border.

Israeli military officials told the national newspaper Haaretz they were "disturbed" by mounting insecurity along the shared border with Lebanon, saying recent events suggest Hezbollah has no intention of disarming.

U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 34-day conflict between Hezbollah and Israeli in 2006, calls on the Shiite militia to disarm while ordering Israeli forces to respect Lebanese sovereignty.

Beirut, for its part, has lodged repeated complaints with the United Nations over the past several weeks charging Israeli forces with violating Lebanese airspace and territorial waters.

I do think the comment section of this new format is kind of screwed up. Sometimes one’s comments are posted right through. Other times you get the message that they are “awaiting moderation” but no matter how innocent your post is they never make it through.

An early glitch only hopefully; the new format looks really nice otherwise so hats off to Phil and Adam.

Otherwise because of this apparent glitch I’ll repost a couple that are being “moderated” into oblivion:

Shirin: I have found that link and it’s here:

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1101801.html

And, interestingly enough and to your precise point the Orthodox Union was reported in same as expressing “its sincere regret to those of other faiths who may have been embarrassed or offended by the publication of this work.”

Shirin wrote:

"What about any offense caused to Hezbollah, which is a legitimate Lebanese liberation and political movement, or for that matter any Lebanese, or any Shi`i, or any Muslim, or any Arab? They have without question been every bit as insulted as the Catholics – in fact, what about Catholic Hezbollah supporters ?"

Interesting. In fact Shirin I have found that link and here's what the Union actually said:

Ed is just another standard-issue Christian anti-Semite. That he does not endlessly repeat the "Jews killed Jesus" mantra does not alter that. After all, he has his own tedious ideological anti-Semitic mantra. It does not serve the discussion in any practical way at all, and it becomes incredibly boring incredibly quickly.

I don't know if the comment section of this promising looking new format is screwed up or what but I don't see a comment I tried posting here so I'll just assume it's vanished and post again:

In a couple of threads back I think I was the first to note this story, but then another article came out and I noted same in that thread.

Essentially, after the original Haaretz article came out the Union of Jewish Congregations investigated and utterly renounced and repudiated the booklet. Essentially it said that it was endorsed by a branch office or officer and not reviewed by any higher authority in the Union and it immediately and obviously sincerely apologized for any offense caused to Catholics. It was obviously horrified by the thing and I think it ought to be believed: The repudiation was immediate, the Union could hardly believe the substance of the booklet, nor is it credible that it knew it was a lie and still put it out believing that it was worth the damage it would do if it was found out.

For some reason I can't now find the Haaretz article that was posted with this new info but it was definitely there.

Look, Ed, your most basic obsession is only another conspiracy narrative.

You can't equate a couple of Jews in the communist leadership with all Jewish Russians. Much less make them collectively responsible for what happened. We've been there before. Start studying Russian history.

Besides the conspiracy narrative that later develops into the Protocols has deep roots in the orthodox Church. Nilus who added a version to his book in 1905 is in fact such a Russian holy man.

Are you trying to convince us that the hoax at the start of the century had was a vision for things to come, no matter how deeply related to other myth and fictions?

But why did I again waste this lines.

I waded into the comment section on that post, and it's like thought police there... users hounding out users who even 'tip' a post they deem offensive. So much for free speech. Most of the commenters are proud to say they haven't even read the post, the title was enough for them to decide it was offensive. Automatons.
