Eliding Safire

How do you connect the dots if no one puts the dots down?

There’s no mention of Israel in the surprisingly-short Times obituary for the columnist William Safire. None in the Washington Post either.

But it’s the main event in Haaretz, in the headline on a short obit: "staunch defender of Israel."

Safire was Horatio at the Gate when it came to intermarriage, by the way. Didn’t want rabbis doing em.

Back in ’04, David Corn defenestrated Safire, showing that he had credulously and repeatedly bought a link between Saddam and Al-Qaeda.

Did his credulousness come out of Jewish concern for Israel? I bet it did. But how can I say, when people ignore the issue?
