You know, I’m going to have to reread the thing again, because that’s not how it seemed to me at all. Initially, in the opening parts it sounded like more pro-Israel pablum, but when I got into it there was a pretty clear description of the war crimes and destruction and the clearest account of the cruelty and sheer cynicism of the Israeli blockade. He also mentions the often lethal shooting over the border that Israeli soldiers engage in, and describes how this looks to the Palestinians at the receiving end. I just don’t see these sorts of details in the MSM and Moyers skipped over it entirely, talking as though there was Hamas aggression and an Israeli over-reaction. You’d think from the Moyers piece that the Israelis just suddenly went a little nuts in the Gaza War. You learn better from the New Yorker article.

I’m pretty allergic to mainstream media pro-Israel bias and I was expecting a pretty hefty dose of it in the New Yorker based on what I’ve seen there before and the Moyers interview with Goldstone actually disappointed me a great deal, because Moyers adopted so many Israeli talking points and not just as a devil’s advocate–as I just said, he left out the blockade and the many, far larger acts of Israeli violence that occurred in the period when Hamas was firing rockets. If you thought there was merit in the Moyers piece (and there was some), I can’t imagine how you could fail to see it in Wright’s article, which to my mind was considerably better.

The article may have had serious weaknesses, but to say that it just parroted the Israeli viewpoint is wrong.

Anyone who can look at the devastation of Gaza and still say, “Israel is only defending itself” has a cabbage for a brain and a stone for a soul.

Even Goldstone, in his exchange with Gold, stuck to the “defense” theme and still said nothing about the blockade.

Jews have a patent on the word persecution. Goldstone’s use of persecution might be why the Israelis are so hostile toward him.

Destroying the only flour mill illustrates how the IDF is an immoral outfit, run by uzi-wielding hooligans and there rabbi brethren. They couldn’t tackle Hezbollah in 2006, so they moved on to an easier target in 2008. Civilians.

This report illustrates that 85% Congress haven’t read the report or do not understand what war crimes are. Do we want them voting on heath care?

These tiles have to make a choice: it’s covering walls and floors, or extremism. It can’t be both. The Al-Hadad company could’ve accepted Israel as a neighbor but instead it turned to producing violent rejectionist tiles. Now they have to face the consequences of that choice. The IDF has investigated claims that some of the tiles in question were civilians, and concluded that was not the case.

I forgot to add that the IDF did everything it possibly could to minimize damage to the tiles. How would you feel if you had a tile factory in your backyard, threatening your family and children? That tile factory chose to obstruct IDF goals in the region–on reflection, was that a wise choice? If those tiles commit war crimes, shouldn’t they be held accountable, too?

There were terrorists hiding in the tile factory, Phil. And those tiles can be used to make unconventional weapons which have already killed and maimed Israelis in Ashkelon and S’derot. If Mexicans were making tiles and within striking distance of San Diego, don’t you think the U.S. would do something about it? Why does Human Rights Watch target Jews, but no other country, for criticism when they bulldoze a tile factory? If Palestinians hadn’t been making tiles to begin with, the IDF would not have needed to destroy this factory.
