Spencer Ackerman’s column, guest-authored by Jolene Crixell, reporting on an appearance at UC San Diego two days ago by his holiness Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren:
He told us about how when he was asked to be ambassador everyone kept telling him what a difficult job he’d face. Even Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman — whom he described as “not a squeamish guy” — warned him that he was going to have a hard time. The reason was that the American people had just elected Barack Hussein Obama [Ed. [Ackerman] Note: I asked Jolene whether Oren really did use Obama’s middle name here, and she said he did indeed. What a disgraceful dog-whistle] and that there were three potential issues of conflict between the Netanyahu government and the American president.
The first was the two-state solution, which the Obama administration was deeply attached to, and wanted to move quickly toward. Oren said that Netanyahu had reservations about it due to previous problems with unilateral withdrawal in Gaza and that he did not believe the Palestinians would recognize Israel. The second problem is the settlements. Oren presented the argument that since Israel is a democracy, it would somehow be wrong for the government to tell people where they could live. The third, and biggest potential point of conflict was over Iran. He said that while Obama had made a diplomatic overture to Iran, Israel was afraid of an open ended negotiation. [Ed. Note: Not that that's a live issue, but whatever, Mr. Ambassador...]
I’m pretty sure Oren said that at UC Irvine as well before his talk was interrupted. So I guess it’s standard Israeli embassy usage, sort of the way Ann Coulter uses it. The least the prez could do would be to live up to the name– and distance himself from Bibi’s govt a tiny little bit.
It wasn’t me who said, and I wish I had: Obama tried to be bi-partisan, but he just ends up bi-polar.
A guy who had neither the guts or even the mere sense of political self-preservation needed to stop Bush’s wars is never gonna do anything meaningful about Israel.
Obama failed that test, and worse, insists on covering the backs of everyone who will cheerfully stick a knife into his.
I’m with you, Scott; does Obama think that all the good results from the Bush policies and the “special” relationship with Israel, and all the Bush people Obama left in the military and government were just waiting for him, Obama, to come along so they can shower him with all the good results of these policies?
Plus, by not trying to bring the military back under civilian control, Obama has the military’s foreign policy in conflict with his own. And they have the advantage, and a much better chance of controlling events.
My one beef about the pithy statement is that it doesn’t work. Bi-polar people show emotions — even if those emotions are unhinged and out of control. I’ve had kitchen appliances that display a greater emotional range than the current President.
And at this point, I think I really would rather we had a toaster oven in the Oval Office. At least toaster ovens don’t slaughter civilians wholesale with Predator drones.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
