Influential blogger shot at W Bank demo

on 9 Comments

Didi Remez, a blogger who has been an invaluable news source for those tracking the Israeli media, was shot in the leg with a plastic bullet at the same Friday demo in Nabi Saleh at which Emily Stark of ISM was shot, and at which Huwaida Arraf was arrested. I love the photo above [Remez is in the black jacket, photo by Haidi Totol]– because it offers a glimpse, as so many action shots from West Bank demos do, of Jews and Palestinians struggling together. Change my world, people. Remez:

Until you experience it, you can never understand it: standing 30 meters from a soldier with my hands in the air, he puts a plastic bullet in my leg and continues firing after I drop and at the guys trying to drag me to cover. Ruined my only pair of jeans :-)

MY COMMENT: That reminds me: Phil did you (and/or your wife) ever get that ink out of your jeans? You know, that time you gave them to your wife to be laundered and neither of you checked the pockets. And a pen was in one of the pockets and leaked ink (in the dryer, I’m guessing based on experience). And there was a big kerfuffle because neither of you would accept responsibility for the oversight.

P.S. Needless to say, I’m glad that Didi Remez was apparently not seriously injured. Also, I believe I still have a barely worn pair of Sergio Valente jeans from the ’80s that I can send him.

Good man. I wish him a quick recovery.

I sometimes wonder if taking photos of the faces of the army thugs and posting them online along with a description of their actions would be a good way to fight back such barbarism.

Sort of like putting the face of child molesters up on the local community web site?
Where would the public post board be for Chaney and Shrub and their MSM scribblers, the neocons and PIP neoliberals? And, of course, the independent, Joe Lieberman?

    The Doomsday Weapon

This week, Petraeus conveyed an unequivocal message: after reviewing the problems in his AOR (area of responsibility) – which includes, among others, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, and Yemen – he turned to what he called the “root causes of instability” in the region. The list was topped by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Netanyahu government immediately went into damage-limitation mode. Its spokespersons declared that Petraeus represents a narrow military approach, that he doesn’t understand political matters, that his reasoning is faulty. But it is not this that made people in Jerusalem break out into a cold sweat.

Because most American Jews are ready to do anything – just anything – for the government of Israel. With one exception: they will not do anything that appears to hurt the security of the United States. When the flag of security is hoisted, the Jews, like all Americans, snap to attention and salute. The Damocles sword of suspicion of disloyalty hangs above their heads. For them, this is the ultimate nightmare: to be accused of putting the security of Israel ahead of the security of the U.S. Therefore it is important for them to repeat endlessly the mantra that the interests of Israel and the U.S. are identical.

And now comes the most important general of the U.S. Army and says that this is not so. The policy of the present Israeli government is endangering the lives of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Doomsday Weapon , By Uri Avnery —, 02/22/10
(EXCERPT)…The last of the Zealots committed suicide in Masada.
The Zionists did indeed try to learn from history. They acted in a rational way, did not provoke the great powers, endeavored in every situation to attain what was possible. They accepted compromises, and every compromise served them as a basis for the next surge forward. They cleverly utilized the radical stance of their adversaries and gained the sympathy of the whole world.
But since the beginning of the occupation, their mind has become clouded. The cult of Masada* has become dominant. Divine promises once again start to play a role in public discourse. Large parts of the public are following the new zealots.
The next phase is also repeating itself: the leaders of Israel are starting a rebellion against the new Rome…
