Sullivan says ‘the soul of Israel’ is at risk

Andrew Sullivan continues to take the spears in the mainstream, now on Sheikh Jarrah ethnic cleansing.

I reflect that I saw Rick Hertzberg, who also worked for Marty Peretz at the New Republic, and who now works for David Remnick at the New Yorker, at the Sheikh Jarrah demo a few weeks back and he has not, to my knowledge, written about it. That is a form of denial, of a very important story.

Hey guys imagine if the video posted in Sullivans article was made by Palestinians? link to youtube.com

    Who are the terrorists?

    • Chaos4700 says:

MEMRI churns out videos “made by Palestinians” by the dozens, and they are picked up by MSM commentators all the time. We don’t have to imagine anything over here, aparisian. We’re living in Bedlam.

Amateurs. No melody, and the lyrics hardly rhyme.

I mean if you’re going to glorify a mass murderer, at the very least put some artistic effort into it. Sheeesh.

That would happen if someone posted the video of the counterprotesters from yesterday’s event in NY

Saying that the soul of Israel is at risk is akin to saying that Cheney’s soul is at risk.

As far as I know, Cheney sold his to the devil long ago.

  4. Sullivan’s statement that Hebron’s cave of Machpela was made into a heritage site because of Goldstein is ignorant!

(disclaimers: I don’t like going to grave sites. The Jews of Hebron are evil and nuts. Goldstein was evil. Praising Goldstein is evil and is a sign of a loss of soul in a part of Israel’s society. I would be willing to give up Hebron in a two state solution.)

The cave is the burial place of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca and Leah and has been a major Jewish pilgrimage site for thousands of years. A more sensitive Prime Minister might have figured out a way to make it a heritage site without causing provocation and even with cooperation with the PA. But please, Mister Sullivan, do not confuse your ignorance with facts. It is a major Jewish heritage site mentioned in Genesis.

    • potsherd says:

Do you really believe that mythical persons are buried in that cave?

    • Chaos4700 says:

Goldstein slaughtered all those Palestinians because he was driven to “cleanse” the holy site of non-Jewish people.

That site is not on Israeli land. Israel has no business making it a national heritage site, and the fact that you’re willing to turn a blind eye to the Israelis twice-damned maneuver by making a theft of yet more land and legitimizing the twisted “Eretz Israel” fantasies of extremists like Goldstein is morally and intellectually disingenuous.

  5. I would not bet my house on who is buried in that cave. That’s really beside the point. The point is that the place is a major heritage site and has been for quite a while.

  6. tree says:

Israel didn’t name it a Jewish heritage spot. They made it an Israeli NATIONAL heritage site, but it is NOT within Israel. That is the problem, and that is why even the US State Department slammed the decision. It was never listed as a national heritage site prior to this, despite the fact that is a Jewish pilgrimage site ( as well as a Muslim one.)

The decision to include it and Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem was pushed by the right wing parties, and they’ve stated that they hope to include Kfar Etzion, also in the occupied territories, as a national heritage site. Most of the national heritage sites appear to be about early Zionist sites, not Jewish religious ones, and those who pushed for its inclusion are those who wish to expand Israel to include the West Bank. And of course there’s the tacklessness of including it on the list 3 days before the anniversary of Goldstein’s massacre.

  7. matter says:

Whether Hertzberg wants to write or not, Remnick, as an avowed Zionist and unapologetic Iraq war booster, is surely muzzling any access to reality.
