Those backward Muslims

Politics Daily, on the Clinton-Mezvinsky banns later this month, has a lot of rabbis urging Chelsea to convert to Judaism. More social coercion:

Religion is an issue as well, as it often is: Chelsea, 30, is the daughter of a social justice Methodist (Hillary) and a Bible-quoting Southern Baptist (Bill), and Mezvinsky, 32, was raised in Conservative Judaism, a major Jewish movement that discourages intermarriage and forbids rabbis to officiate at — or even attend — interfaith weddings in which the non-Jewish spouse does not convert.

I would just like to point out that Mezvinsky’s father is a former congressman and his mother is a former congresswoman. Reminding us that Jews are a very powerful group in America. And yet Jewish religious groups bar intermarriage. This is objectionable when it intersects American public life, as it often does. (Think of the fundamentalist Christian university that barred inter-religious dating and was an issue in the South Carolina Republican primary 10 years ago.)

It is unsustainable, both on Jane Austen’s old sociology (a rich single man must be in want of a wife…), and the American Establishment’s new one. And that unsustainability is hurting the Israel lobby.
