Yonatan Shapira sprays ‘Free Gaza’ on Warsaw Ghetto wall

on 3 Comments

Combatants for Peace co-founder and IDF refuser Yonatan Shapira sprayed the messages "Free Gaza and Free Palestine" and "Liberate all ghettos" on the remnants of the Warsaw Ghetto wall:

"I am not saying there is a comparison with the monstrosity of Nazi death camps, but I am saying we must talk about the silence in Israel and the world when people are confined in a ghetto-like place…

Delegations of young Israelis [come here] to see the history of our people but also are subjected to militaristic and nationalistic brainwashing on a daily basis. Maybe if they see what we wrote here today they will remember that oppression is oppression, occupation is occupation, and crimes against humanity are crimes against humanity, whether they have been committed here in Warsaw or in Gaza."

The Yad Vashem response corrected for the sake of historical truth and moral consistency:

The use of the Holocaust in the way that the Zionist movement, Israel and Yad Vashem have chosen to do so is a crass manipulation that warps the historical truth

Bravo, Yonatan. An appropriate answer to the racist and militarist indoctrination carried out in Warsaw and in the name of the victims of Nazi brutality.

Well, I’m glad it was a Jew who did it, even though it needed to be done.

But the ones who need to see this message will refuse it.

You don’t get much more historically resonant than that.
