Libyan jets bomb rebels as no-fly diplomacy crawls
AJDABIYAH, Libya, March 14 (Reuters) – Muammar Gaddafi’s jets bombed Libyan rebels on Monday in a counter-offensive that has pushed them back 100 miles (160 km) in a week, far outpacing diplomatic efforts to impose a no-fly zone to help the rebels. There is now a very real possibility that by the time world powers agree on a response to the conflict, Gaddafi’s forces may already have won.

Residents of the coastal city say Kadafi has imposed a sea, air and land blockade, with soldiers stationed on three sides. Doctors say they are running out of medicines for civilian patients. Misurata is a picturesque seaside enclave with a reputation as Libya’s wealthiest and most educated city. It also is one of the most prominent of the rebel-held territories in a country split into regions controlled by dictator Moammar Kadafi and a nascent opposition based in Benghazi.

Gadhafi’s global partners in crime
The time has come to put a stop to the crimes against humanity being perpetrated by Moammar Gadhafi on the people of Libya. Libya’s Gadhafi, increasingly isolated internationally, finds supporters in Latin America
CARACAS, Venezuela — As Moammar Gadhafi finds himself increasingly isolated internationally, he still has at least a few friends far away. Latin America’s most prominent leftists rallied early to his defense and have stayed there even as former friends, neighbors and countrymen have abandoned the embattled Libyan leader and urged his ouster. Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, Cuba’s Fidel Castro and Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega have been foremost in opposing U.S. and NATO military involvement, and in suggesting that reports of atrocities by Gadhafi’s troops are overblown or unproven.

Gaddafi says shocked by former European friends
ROME, March 15 (Reuters) – Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said he felt betrayed by former European allies like Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi who have turned against him and said business links with Europe risked lasting damage. Gaddafi dismissed demands by world powers for a no-fly zone over Libya or the possibility of airstrikes, telling Tuesday’s edition of the Italian daily Il Giornale that: “We will fight and win. A situation of that type will only serve to unite the Libyan people.”

Eastern Libyan rebels quit checkpoint under fire
AJDABIYAH, Libya, March 15 (Reuters) – Rebels fighters in the eastern Libyan town of Ajdabiyah retreated from a checkpoint on the western edge as forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi bombarded them on Tuesday, a Reuters correspondent reported.  “There is a lot of to and fro. They may go back later, but it is the first time I have seen them abandon that checkpoint in such numbers since I have been here,” said correspondent Mohammed Abbas. As he fell back, Abbas said the bombardment started creeping closer to the town. “The barrage is now landing closer to the town,” he said.

The moral imperative of a no-fly zone | John Kerry
The US and world community must show they will not stand by while this thug Gaddafi uses airpower to murder fellow Libyans.  Leaders around the world are vigorously debating the advisability of establishing a no-fly zone to stop the violence unfolding in Libya. Some cite Bosnia, where Nato took too long to protect civilian populations in the mid 1990s, as a reason to act. Others remember Rwanda, where President Bill Clinton later expressed regret for not acting to save innocent lives. But the stakes in Libya today are more appropriately underscored by the tragedy in southern Iraq in the waning days of the Persian Gulf war, 20 years ago.

There were reports that he proposed Gaddafi appoint a president but officials at Erdoğan’s office said he did not specify what title the new appointee should have. Libya’s Oil Exports Have ‘Ground To A Halt,’ International Energy Agency Says
CAIRO — Libya’s oil exports have “ground to a halt” because of the fighting between rebels and pro-government forces, and it could be months before the country’s crude resurfaces on world markets, the International Energy Agency said Tuesday. The Paris-based group, whose members are mainly oil-consuming industrial nations such as the United States, also said that production from the North African nation appeared to have “slowed to a trickle” as the fighting and mounting unrest prompted an exodus of foreign oil workers and led international companies to halt their operations in the country.

ANALYSIS-Will world turn again to deal with Libya’s Gaddafi?
LONDON, March 15 (Reuters) – As his troops advance on opposition forces, Muammar Gaddafi’s survival looks more likely — leaving foreign powers facing awkward decisions over whether to isolate him or work again for a rapprochement. Foreign powers were initially united in condemning Libya’s leader for a bloody crackdown against an uprising that followed the ouster of Egypt and Tunisia’s presidents, but have shown little appetite or consensus for action.

Could Hizbullah Save the Libyan Revolution?, Tony Sayegh
Here is a bold and crazy idea. Just as Saudi Arabia, at the behest of Washington, sent its US-supplied tanks into Bahrain, to protect their fellow puppet regime of Al-Khalifa, Hizbullah can boldly declare that it has a moral authority to help the Libyan revolutionaries at a critical time of need.  There is self-interest, in addition. Some believe that the Lebanese Imam Sadr, who was kidnapped and disappeared by the Libyan dictator, is still alive in Libya. What could be a more noble mission for Hizbullah than to find his whereabouts and to rescue Imam Sadr, if he is alive? Iran would throw a major monkey wrench into the imperial works and support this Hizbullah mission. It would be Iran’s answer to the imperial challenge in Bahrain. I have no doubt that as few as a thousand disciplined and well-trained Hizbullah fighters could turn the tide and send the Libyan tyrant running. Who knows, the reward could be a live Imam Sadr kept in a dungeon in Tripoli. What a coup would that be for Hizbullah (and for Iran) throughout the Arab world. I urge Sayyed Nasrallah to consider this bold idea. These are critical times which are full of potentialities and the courageous and bold decisions would be immensely rewarded.
