Boiling the frog: ‘every week’ another Israeli annexation bill

A few days ago I mentioned annexation hasbara was on steroids, yesterday Kate posted “One-state solution (Israeli style): New Knesset bill to extend Israeli law to settler museums”, citing Haaretz  “the bill is the first in a series whose purpose is to strengthen Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank.” Make no mistake, this is an annexation bill. In other words, it’s not only the hasbara that’s on steroids.

Jpost is a little more explicit:

Every week, he said a legislator would propose an amendment to existing laws, so that one by one, they would be applicable in Judea and Samaria.

Did everyone hear that? Apparently right-wing politicians “failed” to generate enough support to “fully annex Judea and Samaria”, hence:

In the absence of such support, Ariel told The Jerusalem Post that he had come to believe that it could be better to advance the matter in small stages.

And guess what? Israel has been on a “buying spree” for new annexation artillery in anticipation of an escalation in non violent protests.

Snipers will switch to non-lead rounds and will use new rules of engagement to diffuse potential riots in W. Bank and along borders….the infantry a new receiver for the standard-issue M-16 semi-automatic rifle that can enable it to shoot a 0.22 round instead of the usual 5.56 mm. bullet….the IDF has purchased impact rounds for snipers for use with Remington M-24 7.62 mm. rifles……The Ground Forces Command has also instituted new rules of engagement for snipers who will be deployed to stop demonstrations and marches, including at what distance they are allowed to open fire.

How reassuring/not.

This is radically alarming. This month Palestine is expected to submit an application for membership in the United Nations. How many ‘annexation amendments’ to Israel’s existing laws can we expect between now and September?

US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and Code Pink are collecting signatures for a petition addressed to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice calling on the United States not to veto Palestine’s membership application in the Security Council. Thus far 87 local and national organizations have endorsed this petition. We need to make our voices heard.
