Reverse aliyah: ’92d St Y’ works with Israeli consulate to provide program to Israeli parents

How many times can you say Israeli in one sentence? Can you top the 92d Street Y? “Israeli Parenting Workshop at the 92d Street Y: Israeliness, family programs served Israeli-style”

Overview The Israeli House, a program through the Consulate of Israel, in cooperation with the 92nd Street Y Israeliness, is proud to present this series for Israeli parents. Taught by educational psychologist Heli Barak-Stein, the sessions will combine both theoretical and practical knowledge. Parents will be able to share personal experiences, learn skills and deal with personal questions regarding their children and family. Program meets Oct 26, Nov 2, Nov 9 and Nov 16 (8 pm – 10 pm).

Says my tipster, a non-Jewish author:  “I’ll never read there again, or attend another event there.”

This program is evidence of what John Mearsheimer calls “reverse aliyah” — the 700,000 to 1 million Israelis who have left the country. And there are shades of Algeria here. Algeria devoured French politics in the 1950s, colonialist Algerians mingled with the French back in France, and ultimately fled to France…

The 92d Street Y’s involvement also feeds my sense that among American Jews, Israeliness is now a positive brand that is being aggressively marketed. So: the fact that Dennis Ross was chairman of the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute in Jerusalem and now runs Middle East policy under Obama– great. The fact that our new US ambassador to Israel is an out-and-out Zionist who calls for more Zionist education for young Americans, no problem. The fact that 20 percent of the Congress goes to Israel on summer recess, hey, perfect.
