Streisand to sing at Israeli soldier benefit in LA

on 56 Comments

Rare performance: Barbra Streisand will play a Dec. 8 LA gala for the Israel Defense Forces. Hosted by Jason Alexander, who is going to forge the two-state solution. Sponsored by Haim Saban. (Hebrew link) She’s a big Democrat, right? So’s Saban, more or less. No Christian Zionists in sight. Here’s Barbra talking about Bill Clinton’s dedication to human rights. And kids in Africa, and global climate change. Progressive except Palestine. This is what J Street is up against, inside the Jewish community. And what America is up against.

If she sang in Israel for the IDF, half the audience would walk out.

Potsherd- A truly ignorant comment. They’d walk out because of a woman’s voice and halacha? Maybe 2% would walk out for such a reason. They’d walk out because she favors a two state solution? Maybe .01% would walk out for such a reason. Get real.

Considering what most of them sound like, I agree with the rabbi. And even more so when it is Streisand.

Guess you are joking. I would agree when referring to BS only but totally disagree when it comes to Sinead O’Connor or Annie Lennox.
Both have great voices and stood in support of Palestine …

        “Sinead O’Connor or Annie Lennox”

I can’t remember what either of them sound like, but on the whole the human voice is not a musical instrument and should not be used as one. Women’s voices are usually worse than men’s because they are usually higher pitched and have screechier overtones, but that doesn’t mean that male singers are anything other than a pain in the sinuses.

on the whole the human voice is not a musical instrument and should not be used as one. “

Completely portable, no batteries, no power cables, no sticks or bits of elephant or plastic, no environmental pollution. It can make a range of sounds far in excess of any man made instrument and with the exception of a very few people, every human being has one. It’s the ultimate musical instrument and method of human communication. Even animals can learn to understand it

“Women’s voices are usually worse than men’s because they are usually higher pitched and have screechier overtones, but that doesn’t mean that male singers are anything other than a pain in the sinuses.”

Maybe your ma never learned how to sing a soothing lullaby? :-)

I suggest you broaden the range of what you’ve been listening to.

“I suggest you broaden the range of what you’ve been listening to.”

I’ve been listening to human voices singing in a wide variety of Western and Eastern popular and formal styles for sixty-six years. Most of it sounded pretty bad. The human voice raised in song is usually an unpleasant sound. It should only be used for Shakespeare and RoHa’s pontifications.

My goodness, Wondering Jew, are Israelis becoming that lax in their religious observance? That they would gaze with raised eyes upon the spectacle of a shameless woman disporting herself like a harlot?
Don’t you understand, Wondering Jew? If Israel does not maintain the proper Jewish religious standards, and the proper respect for the ultra-Orthodox, what do you think God will do? I shudder to think of it.

Hmmm… if the main goal is peace and two states, wouldn’t it make the most sense to sing at a fundraiser for a group dedicated to reconciling the two sides, rather than a fundraiser for one of the sides’ militaries, which is already the 4th strongest army in the world?

If the rare singing performance is for fundraising for the army, then doesn’t that mean they really believe that while peace and reconciliation are good, the most important thing is to further strengthen the super-powerful army?

In other words, reconciling the sides is good, but it’s much more important to dominate with much stronger force.

However, I think that people who believe most in equality, peace and reconciling should give greater priority to groups dedicated primarily to those goals.

(excerpts) Infidels is singer-songwriter Bob Dylan’s 22nd studio album, released by Columbia Records in October 1983. . .
. . .The song “Neighborhood Bully” is often regarded as a defense of Israel. Events in the history of the State of Israel are referenced, such as the Six Day War and Operation Opera, Israel’s bombing of the Osirak nuclear reactor near Baghdad on June 7, 1981. Dylan commented extensively on the song in a 1984 interview with ‘Rolling Stone’ Magazine.[6] In 2001, the ‘Jerusalem Post’ described the song as “a favorite among Dylan-loving residents of the territories”. . .

P.S. FROM Bob Dylan – The Rolling Stone Interview (by Kurt Loder – 1984)

. . .Your latest album, Infidels, is hardly subteen fodder. Some critics have even detected a new note of conservatism in some of the songs — even outright jingoism in “Neighborhood Bully” in which the metaphorical subject is said to be “just one man” whose “enemies say he’s on their land.” That’s clearly a strong Zionist political statement, is it not?
You’d have to point that out to me, you know, what line is in it that spells that out. I’m not a political songwriter. Joe Hill was a political songwriter; uh, Merle Travis wrote some political songs. “Which Side Are You On?” is a political song. And “Neighborhood Bully,” to me, is not a political song, because if it were, it would fall into a certain political party. If you’re talkin’ about it as an Israeli political song – in Isreal alone, there’s maybe twenty political parties. I don’t know where that would fall, what party.
Well, would it be fair to call that song a heartfelt statement of belief?
Maybe it is, yeah. But just because somebody feels a certain way, you can’t come around and stick some political-party slogan on it. If you listen closely, it really could be about other things. It’s simple and easy to define it, so you got it pegged, and you can deal with it in that certain kinda way. However, I wouldn’t do that. ‘Cause I don’t know what the politics of Israel is. I just don’t know.
So you haven’t resolved for yourself, for instance, the Palestinian question?
Not really, because I live here. . .

. . .Well, do you think Israel should get more help from the American Jewish community? I don’t want to push this so far, but it just seems so. . .
Well, you’re not pushing it too far, you’re just making it specific. And you’re making it specific to what’s going on today. But what’s going on today isn’t gonna last, you know? The battle of Armageddon is specifically spelled out: where it will be fought, and if you wanna get technical, when it will be fought. And the battle of the Armageddon definitely will be fought in the Middle East. . .

(excerpt)…According to the Sue Fishkoff book “The Rebbe’s Army”, p.167, Bob Dylan is one of the biggest names associated with Chabad. In the early 1980s, Chabad “rescued” Dylan from a brief flirtation with Christianity, and for several years, Dylan studied with Minneapolis Rabbis Manis Friedman and Moshe Feller, whom he visited also for Shabbat dinners. Dylan made a surprise appereance at the 1988 and 1989 Chabad telethons, once playing “Hava Negila” out of tune on the harmonica…

        EXCERPT (01/10/08) :

It’s just been announced that Madonna spends 120,000 dollars a year on….WATER!!!! Please reread that sentence for the full effect. Yes mam, The Queen Of Pop (not the drink, the music) spends almost 10,000 dollars a month on special Kabbalah-blessed water for her and her clan. And what’s the price tag on this special “holy” water? 5 dollars for each small bottle.

        SOURCE –

        EXCERPT (10/29/08):

Madonna’s plan to ensure all of her children get an express ticket to Jewish-lite heaven was to fill her indoor home swimming pool with Kabbalah water.
This would have gone nicely with the bench press she found near the Dome of the Rock, the pull-up bar she bought at a Southern Baptist community auction, and the sauna she made from the inside-out skulls of over a dozen Lucifarians.
The Kabbalah water in the pool – well that’s actually true. She was gonna stand there with millions of imported plastic bottles and dump each individual one into the deep end until it was at least semi-swimmable.
Not any more though. Now she’s just getting divorced – and Guy Ritchie has decided that whatever pours out of his green garden hose is probably good enough. That’s why he just canceled her weird, massive water order. . .

He discussed his views on the Middle East and Persian Gulf region in great detail in a reasonably recent interview with ‘Haaretz’:

When I see Ahmadinejad, I see Hitler. They speak the same language. His motivation is also clear: the return of the Mahdi is a supreme goal. And for a religious person of deep self-persuasion, that supreme goal is worth the liquidation of five and a half million Jews. We cannot allow ourselves that. Nuclear weapons in the hands of a religious leadership that is convinced that the annihilation of Israel will bring about the emergence of a new Muslim caliphate? Israel cannot allow that. P.S. NOTE: Iran’s Ahmadinejad not anti-Israeli enough?, by By Dan Murphy, Christian Science Monitor, 07/22/09

(excerpt) On Wednesday, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini, who in Iran’s theocratic system wields ultimate state power, disqualified Mr. Ahmadinejad’s appointed top deputy. Why? Because of right-wing anger that his choice, close friend and relative by marriage Esfandiar Rahim Mashai, said last year that Iran was a friend to the whole world, “even Israelis.”. . .

(excerpt) . . . Ordinary Iranians have been the inadvertent beneficiaries of all this political gridlock. Ahmadinejad has used social liberalization as a way to shore up his support over the past year — by encouraging women’s involvement in politics, demanding that youth be free to date and wear clothing of their choice, and similar actions, much to the chagrin of theocrats and parliamentarians. The public has enjoyed greater personal freedoms as a result. Of course, that may only be a temporary reprieve. Domestic unrest over the economy is growing. Whatever their differences, it’s easy to imagine Iran’s warring factions agreeing to put them aside and focus on the real long-term threat to their power: the Iranian people themselves.” . . .

A few years ago I had the misfortune of seeing that barbara woman at a Malibu restaurant (I live in Los Angeles where random ‘hollywood moments’ are the norm).

She sat at a round table with 3 other women. What distinguished her from the other ladies was that she looked like a shrimp next to 3 lobsters, despite her signature BIG hairdo which is usually worn to give off the illusion of ‘tallness’. Perhaps she’s slightly taller than Napoleon, I found myself quietly thinking. And I gotta tell ya too that her hair was sooo excruciatingly perfectly styled that it actually looked fake – like the hair of a wax statue.

At some point our eyes did meet across the restaurant and no neither of us smiled.

Burrrrrrh shudder the gaze of the ice queen (talking ’bout myself here hahahaha!). I sure don’t see barbara as a queen, more like the janitor for the idf. And her songs are as cheezy as Barry Manilow’s ugh! And while I’m at it, I hate the way she’s soooo in-love with her own hands and fingernails, constantly using them like a 3rd rate seductress in front of the cameras in interviews. Yeah call me petty call me catty call me hicky – but I do find that whole hand thing annoyingly PRETENTIOUS!

And as it happens, I also had a hollywood moment with that jason alexander once in a mid-town sushi restaurant. Ok he’s shorter than Napoleon. ‘Nough said about that one-note talentless bore.

Annie, here is another really obvious example of anti-semitism to add to your collection. (She challenged me to find some at MW after insisting that no one here ever posts anything anti-semitic ever.)

These are perfect examples of that common species of dog whistle bigotry, “phrase replacement.” She merely replaces the word “Jew” with “zio” in order to render obviously anti-Jewish comments, merely anti-Zionist. Problem is, none of these statements make sense with that replacement… especially since she’s using well-worn Jewish stereotypes. Does anyone think that “Zionists” are short, unhealthy or neurotic? Is that a thing? (No.) Or “tribal zio Hollywood agents”? Are we supposed to believe that she meant something other than “Jews” (who hire other Jews regardless of how untalented they are, just because they’re Jewish, obvs!)

As a sporty Goy-girl she obviously doesn’t want to date anyone from ziozville, (New York I guess?) because we are all unattractive here, being Zionists and all. Because that totally makes sense. Hahaha.

Why not wait for State of the Nation? The Oscars? Election campaign 2012?

Time to build the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign somewhat further. Streisand is just the right (is that the “right” word) sort of person to have BDS practised against her. Time at her age that she grew up and started living in the REAL world, not just the world of “let’s pretend!”. More publicity on this issue will go a long way to exposing these people for what they really are.

Like Shakira singing for Hamas. What would happen to her career in the US?….

I’m sure the IDF soldiers would prefer listen to (and look at) Shakira.
If they had a choice, they probably would tell the old Barbra S. “oh, if you must sing, go and sing for Hamas, it is perfectly ok with us, we are happy to look at hot momma Shakira.”

No surprise about Streisand. For decades the line needed to be drawn between so called liberal/Zionist/Democrats. So hypocritical.
