Keep Mondoweiss going strong — make a donation today

Israel/Palestine
logos
Mondoweiss has grown a lot with your help. Here are some logos from the past five years.

As you all know, the last year has seen incredible changes in the conversation about Israel/Palestine. The Arab Spring, Palestinian statehood initiative and Gaza flotillas (and flytilla) have brought world attention to Palestinian conditions. Even the United States is waking up. Our newspapers are beginning to grapple with apartheid conditions in the West Bank, the nonviolent movement for human rights in Palestine, and calls for a single democracy in Israel/Palestine.

Our site has played an important role in this awakening. With our relentless focus on the Israeli occupation and the effects of the occupation on US foreign policy, we have forced ourselves into the American discussion—putting pressure on mainstream publications to begin to acknowledge the realities of the conflict in US public life.

with a donation of $100 or more.

But this process is just beginning. We need your help to continue this important work, so please make a tax-deductible donation to our semi-annual fundraiser.

This has been a banner year for us. Our traffic continues to grow, and lately we have taken the huge step of bringing on two paid staffers in a dogged effort to professionalize the site. This is your achievement. This site would be nowhere without readers’ financial support, which has sustained us, and without the vital comment section, where many informed readers share their knowledge of the conflict.

Please help us keep the momentum!

Our target is $40,000. And half of that is matching funds from generous large donors. So we need $20,000 from readers during this holiday season. Our reader fundraising drives account for nearly half our yearly budget, the rest comes from individual donors. We do not receive finding from foundations or organizations.
All contributions are tax-deductible, thanks to our sponsor, the Center for Economic Research and Social Change.

Any donation of $60 will make you a subscriber, and put a star next to your name as a commenter. And we have a great gift to offer. For all donations of $100 and more we will send you a copy of Joe Sacco’s beautiful graphic novel, Footnotes in Gaza. Sacco’s book chronicles the massacre of 111 Palestinians by Israeli forces in the Gaza towns of Rafah and Khan Younis in 1956. (We ran an excerpt when the book came out.) The fundraiser ends January 1, 2012 and we will send the books out by the end of January.

And thank you! Thanks for your financial support, and thanks for reading this site and writing for it. You are the reason we are growing, and the conversation is changing.

I also thank all contributors for making this site so good. You make me both angry and happy, that’s all I could hope for from this place.

@Mondo: I would chip in a few Euros, I finally managed to get a PayPal account. Unfortunately PP is not offered as an option on the donations page.

The new site looks awesome! Congratulations on all the success.

Everyone should donate at least a little. It’s great to feel a part of something that is changing things for the better.

In twenty-five years the opinions here will look obvious and quaint to most people. Phil Weiss is decades ahead of his time and he pulls us along with him.

Thanks so much everyone for the support. While it is true we need your financial support to continue and keep growing, we very much appreciate all the different ways folks contribute to the site, including posts, comments, emails, and general thumbs up. Thanks!

i’d like to double down on that adam.

what this site means to me personally, something i’ve meant to address because it has changed my life. what it has meant for my life. without a doubt you have created a space where myself and others can blast our thoughts and opinions way beyond any normal reach for an ordinary person like myself.

and it’s the culmination of our voices that in unity brings strength and power to change the world…i thought about that today reading ben’s Football in Burin. how lucky we are to have these incredible contributors..and the awesome reportage of a brand new writer to our site Waleed al-Meadana. it blows my mind we have first hand reportage from gaza about the Israeli bombing that killed Issam Al-Batish and Sobhi Al-Batish in such a personal way. and that’s just examples from today.

and to think we might never have even been in contact w/Waleed’s work had it not been for our contributor Yousef M. Aljamal who we might never have met had you not started the Gaza Two Years Later series which coincidentally segued with the mondoawards . and so many of these writers from gaza like the awesome sameeha elwan and mohammed suliman and i could just go on forever(please SCROLL) because we all are interconnected here now…because of what started here on this site way before i ever got here. and that doesn’t even begin to broach the topic of all the luminaries of the movement who have contributed to this site and i’m not going to start naming them because it’s like..there are so many famous people.

and everyone is so giving of their energy and amazing talent. so i experience mondoweiss as this portal you and phil have have created that empowers so many brilliant people of our movement to shout out to the world…and they can hear us, we are making a difference.

supporting mondoweiss is supporting the expansion of our movement.

i’m rambling, but i’ve visited this thread for days and was just reticent to, once again, talk too much and not know when to stop.

and one last thing for the little group of us addicted to the amazing discussions in the comment sections….yeah, we matter! the vast majority of readers probably don’t bother with us, but some of the smartest ideas i have ever read, some of the most knowledgeable people on the topic of i/p are right here.

so thanks adam and phil, for creating this space. MW is helping to build the movement that will change the world. i really believe that which is why i am here. and we fight and debate but the archives available at this site are like nothing imaginable on the internet. rarely a day goes by i don’t copy/paste/bookmark information that can be found in the archives. international law? check it out. israel’s war’s with lebanon go for it. everything anyone needs to know to combat hasbarists (check out timestamp/FRESH meaning this is going on all the time here)and it’s available in our archives. there’s just no place like mondoweiss.

luv you and thanks so much.

    FUNDRAISING SUGGESTION

During the last fundraiser, I contacted the offices of two of the wealthiest men in America, through windows on one of their web sites.

I needed an attention-grabber, and I would be talking to staff. So I typed in two sentences:

    (1) Is X concerned about the growing power of the Israel lobby in American politics?

    (2) If so, would he consider a donation to Mondoweiss?  (I used the url, not the word.)

I thought this a bit skimpy, and I didn’t want to leave the impression that this was an official mondo message, so I added one of my seemingly inexhaustible supply of English idioms:

I am a commenter on Mondoweiss, and I am writing to you off my own bat.
After a thank you, I typed my name.
    ***
I don’t know if either man gave a donation, but I do think my attention-grabber was pretty good.

    MONDOWEISS Winter FUNDRAISER: More Suggestions

For commenters and readers who want to pitch in and do some fund raising, the most important points it seems to me are these:

    Mondoweiss Objectives: 2011 Winter Fundraiser

    1. To stop the atrocities perpetrated daily against Palestinians by violent and brainwashed IDF youths, and by murderous, land-thieving, illegal settlers who live on the hilltops.

    2. To help Palestinians win their 100-year old struggle to free themselves from the Zionist invaders who occupy their lands.

    3. To make citizens aware of the growing political power of the Israel Lobby, as in its growing ability to influence votes in the U.S. Congress. e.g. the 23 standing ovations for Netanyahu. Provide url to Friedman quote re “buying votes.” )

    4. Money Target, winter 2011: “Our target is $40,000. And half of that is matching funds from generous large donors. So we need $20,000 from readers during this holiday season. Our reader fundraising drives account for nearly half our yearly budget, the rest comes from individual donors. We do not receive finding from foundations or organizations.
