Dore Gold loses NY debate (but his cheering section wants you to read ‘Muslim mafia’ before they restore the caliphate!)

The debate was Tuesday in NY. The resolution was, The UN should admit Palestine as a full member state. Against were former Israeli ambassador Dore Gold and longtime peace-processor and author Aaron David Miller. On the other side, Mustafa Barghouthi and Daniel Levy (of New America Foundation).

Barghouthi and Daniel Levy won by convincing 18% of the audience to change their minds to support the resolution.

More to come later. You can watch the debate here. Two reports. Anonymous friend:

The opposing team kept saying what do you gain what do you gain, and Barghouthi offered the best response to this at one point, though didn’t hammer it home nearly enough: Recognition of statehood would forclose the possibility that the continuation of the settlement project could completely kill chances for Palestinian state. Levy and Barghouthi both made the point repeatedly that UN recognition would be a badly needed change in dynamic, and in at least a few senses begin to balance the disparity of power in negotiations.

Max Blumenthal sent me this note:

At one point during the debate, Levy remarked that if there is not a Palestinian state, “we will be having a discussion about equal rights.” When that debate is scheduled at Skirball by the Rosenkranz family [sponsors of Intelligence Squared debates] , you will know the castle walls have fallen. For now the hasbara crowd refuses to debate BDS in any public forum because the rights based arguments are too powerful to knock down. It was still amazing to watch them contend with Levy and Barghouti, and the stunned reactions of older Jews and kippa wearing students to hearing their same hackneyed arguments be demolished or at least parried.
I realized that Gold only enters these kinds of forums in order to show his side that he is right, and to prevent a gradual defection. That is the current and future posture of hasbara.

Blumenthal ran into a friend of Dore Gold’s after the debate. He posted the video below. Actually her cousin is Dore Gold’s friend. She says, “Seriously you’re going to lose freedoms if you don’t wake up.”

If Zionists can’t win this debate in NYC, where can they win it?
It’s well past the time that Zionists reflect on how corrupt their
conceptual Jewish state has become to each and every one of them.
A poison pill that has been swallowed by the west.

well i just watched the debate..forwarding a head a little now and then. thanks for posting. dore gold is not an appealing character in the least. no charisma. why anyone would would chose him to argue for their side is beyond me. and the other naysayer was a bully as well.

Max Blumenthal is like a fruitcake magnet

I find it somewhat uncomfortable to watch people being hung up on their own petards of ignorance

PERHAP’S SHE WAS REFERRING TO THIS: Israel’s bizarre decision to give up on education – and its future, by Ami Kaufman, +972 Magazine, 12/03/11

(excerpts) Last week I came across a disturbing story, one of many recently, where Haredi school boys threw stones at secular Jewish school girls. [Because] The schoolgirls were singing. . .
. . . what bothered me more about this particular incident was the age of the perpetrators. These were young boys or teenagers, already well versed on the issues of female singing and its dangers.
What this incident shows more than anything else, is the education factor and how it will change this country. And it shows how incidents like the one above are going to happen again, and again and again.
Much has been said on the demographics of the Haredi community and the pace at which it grows. But not many know of how huge an impact Haredi education already has on this state.
These Haredi rock-throwing boys learn in a Haredi school.
That’s because there are four sectors to the Israeli education system: State, State-Religious, Arab, and ultra-Orthodox (Haredi). The major problem with this is that the level of study in the Arab and Haredi schools is much lower than in the state schools. And what makes the problem even worse, is that the level in the state schools themselves has never been lower. . .

P.S. Regarding the “sniper book” the crazy woman refers to towards the end of the video

SEE: American Sniper, by Kap Fulton, Dissident Voice, 01/12/12

(excerpts) The U.S. military credits Chris Kyle with killing over 160 human beings. Sometimes more. “The number is not important to me. I only wish I had killed more…” Good students always want extra credit.
This coming Thursday (January 12, 2012), the Barnes & Noble bookstore located in the Mira Mesa community of San Diego has scheduled a book signing with Chris Kyle. As author, and state-sanctioned hitman, Kyle plans to visit a supposed “friendly town” to promote his heartfelt tale of bloodletting called “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History”.
The event page describes this man as the “most accomplished SEAL sniper in US History.” Accomplished, evidently, in the framework of legal murder. Instead of being tried for crimes against humanity, he will be sitting amongst local families bragging about how many Arabs he has picked off while dreaming about his next Coors Light…
