The virtual “cover” of the new benefit album.
In anticipation of the Global March to Jerusalem on Palestinian Land Day (March 30), a new album called “Jerusalem for Us All” brings together tracks donated by a score of international artists working in hip hop, jazz, rock, folk, and a variety of classical cultural traditions.
The 19-track, MP3-only compilation is a benefit for Global March to Jerusalem – North America (GMJ-NA), an independent coalition of U.S. and Canadian groups supporting the peaceful mass demonstrations planned for March 30 in Palestine, in the four neighboring countries (Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria), and in major cities around the world. Palestinians in Israel, the occupied territories and around the world celebrate Land Day annually to commemorate the events of March 30, 1976, when the Israeli government’s announcement of a plan to expropriate thousands of dunams of land for “security and settlement purposes” provoked a general strike and marches in towns from the Galilee to the Negev. In the ensuing confrontations, the Israeli army and police killed six Palestinian Israelis, wounded more than 100, and arrested hundreds more.
This year’s GMJ has the support of hundreds of grassroots organizations worldwide. Individual endorsers include Nobel Peace Laureates Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mairead Maguire, Palestinian democracy activist Mustafa Barghouti, Jewish Renewal Movement Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, African National Congress leader Ronnie Kasrils, American philosopher and civil rights activist Dr. Cornel West, retired US Ambassador Edward Peck, anti-war activist Medea Benjamin, international law professor Richard Falk, and historian and writer Tariq Ali.

only way to achieve it: US troops (perhaps 200,000) invade israel and IMPOSE a peace and declare Jerusalem an “international city” administered permanently by the UN

Rim Banna is very good; one of the greats on the new album is Marcel Khalifeh that never misses an opportunity to speak or sing out for Land Day. He adapted a couple of Mahmood Darwich’s poems to song. In a musical duel video here between him on oud with someone on bouzouki in one of his compositions, “Ya Bahriyeh”:

I immediately told myself “Gilad Atzmon will be listed among the musicians” and sure enough, there he is! Good for him!
Rather divisive to be promoting this album, at the same time that the petition condemning the anti-semitic messaging of Gilad Atzmon is being circulated by the Electronic Intifada, the US Palestinians Community Network, among others.

‘With this letter, we call for the disavowal of Atzmon by fellow Palestinian organizers, as well as Palestine solidarity activists, and allies of the Palestinian people, and note the dangers of supporting Atzmon’s political work and writings and providing any platforms for their dissemination. We do so as Palestinian organizers and activists, working across continents, campaigns, and ideological positions.
Atzmon’s politics rest on one main overriding assertion that serves as springboard for vicious attacks on anyone who disagrees with his obsession with “Jewishness”. He claims that all Jewish politics is “tribal,” and essentially, Zionist. Zionism, to Atzmon, is not a settler-colonial project, but a trans-historical “Jewish” one, part and parcel of defining one’s self as a Jew. Therefore, he claims, one cannot self-describe as a Jew and also do work in solidarity with Palestine, because to identify as a Jew is to be a Zionist. We could not disagree more. Indeed, we believe Atzmon’s argument is itself Zionist because it agrees with the ideology of Zionism and Israel that the only way to be a Jew is to be a Zionist.’
