Christie in Jerusalem
Gov. Chris Christie in Jerusalem

Wow, what a surprise. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is in Jerusalem, visiting Yad Vashem and meeting the Prime Minister. What are they saying? From the Governor’s twitter feed:

Shimon Peres has declared that Christie is a great friend of Israel. Now Christie can be chosen as the Republicans’ vice presidential candidate. Did Mitt Romney tell him to go? And yes I think this is about donors, and where the political money is… Haaretz:

President Shimon Peres hosted Gov. Chris Christie Tuesday, on the second day of his visit to Israel, hailing the New Jersey governor ‘an outstanding friend to Israel.’

Christie said he brought a delegation of New Jersey business and religious leaders to Israel to look for opportunities to expand commercial ties and strengthen the already “extraordinarily strong” bond between the Jewish state and his own.

You can bet you will not hear Gov Christie telling Bibi ” none of your business” or “It’s just crazy and I”m tired of dealing with the crazies”.

Governor Christie knows which asses to kiss. From the picture above he looks like he is doing just what the Israel lobby and Bibi ordered. “uh huh, yes, whatever you say Bibi”
“I only piss on the peasants with demeaning words and policy decisions.”

Christie isn’t that popular with the Adelson’s of the world. He’s actually quite against Islamophobia and racism of any kind. When he appointed a muslim to a high post(it was judicial of some sort) he was slammed by the racists in the “pro-Israel” community and called them “a bunch of crazies”.

Still, he’s also very much into the whole Christian Zionism business, so it’s complex. I think his first trip to Israel has more to do with him posturing for 2016 than as a VP. He’s Romney’s closest political ally so if he wants VP he will get it regardless. This is a longterm play and I actually don’t think it’s donor base this time.

Sure, the Adelsons/Semblers of the donor base matter but there is a genuine and deep Zionism inside the Republican party which coincided with the rise of the Christian Right. It doesn’t need money to sustain itself like the much more shallow Zionism of the Democratic party, evidence of Obama no less.

We shouldn’t underestimate the role of rich Jews in the political process but we should neither forget that there are deep cultural trends at play here too. Jewish money may massage those trends but that doesn’t mean it’s behind them all-together.

Terri Gross interviewed Peter Beinart. Going to be on today
“Should American Jews Boycott West Bank Settlements?”

I don’t think Gross has ever interviewed a Palestinian or an individual who has been stating for decades that the ever expanding illegal settlements are the huge problem. Gross is the quintessential example of someone who promotes her “people.” Someone could create a graduate study program focused on who she interviews, which books and views she promotes. Bet Terri and Beinart’s interview also focuses on “bad bad Iran” Wondering if Terri repeated one of her false mantras “Iran wants to wipe Israel off the map” during this interview. Will be interesting

Obama keeps pushing the bipartisan religion of interventionism

“As far as U.S. interests are concerned an Israeli attack on Iran will be a disaster. Once underway, all the Muslim world will identify Obama’s Washington as an unqualified supporter of the attack based on the past history of complete and supine bipartisan U.S. support for Israel and the fact that the Israelis will be using U.S. aircraft, ordnance, and technology to kill Iranians. Once Israel’s attack commences, anything Washington has done to stop Israel from acting — be it behind-the-scenes pressure or the Azeri leak — will be irrelevant as Iran and the rest of the Islamic world will attribute ultimate responsibility for the attack to the United States. Iran will surely respond with violence against the oil industry and/or trade in its own region and via its operatives in the United States.

This surely is not a good result for the United States, and there are those who will argue that anything Washington can do to stop an Israeli strike is therefore justified, including the leak about Israel and the Azeri airfields. That argument, however, would be off the mark. As noted above, Israel and all nation-states — even Assad’s Syria and Omar Bashir‘s Sudan — have an absolute right to defend themselves at home and abroad when and as they see fit. For one nation to put obstacles in the way of another to prevent such an exercise of legitimate self-defense is unjustifiable intervention that the intervener will come to regret. Obama’s leaks, for example, have already ensured a damaging tit-for-tat Israeli leak of sensitive U.S. intelligence information, and has put an Azeri government heretofore friendly to the United States on Iran’s long-term hit list. Obama has incurred these costs for Americans whether or not Israel attacks Iran in the near term.

At day’s end it is vital that Americans understand that while an Israeli strike on Iran will damage U.S. interests, kill U.S. citizens, and involve the U.S. military in a war that will look very much like a clash of civilizations, the fault for this lies not with Israel but with the U.S. government and its bipartisan willingness to negate U.S. sovereignty and independence by allowing an alien foreign power to decide when the United States goes to war.

Under both political parties, Washington has performed as Israel’s unquestioning supporter, ready bully boy, eager weapons supplier, and abject apologist, in large part because all administrations have failed to enforce laws on the books that would properly designate AIPAC as an agent of a foreign power; discipline U.S. senators and congressman who meet privately with Israeli prime ministers and other leaders; and much more vigorously hunt, identify, and prosecute pro-Israel U.S. citizens in the private sector, intelligence community, military, Congress, and federal civil service who illegally pass Israel sensitive military, intelligence, technological, and economic information. Such action must begin if America’s sovereignty on the issue of going to war is to be restored, but for now the long record of massive U.S. government intervention on Israel’s side in the latter’s unending war with Muslims will be the main cause of the retribution Iran and other Muslim entities will exact from the United States if Israel attacks Iran. “

FROM THE AIPAC WEBSITE (undated, but still there as of 4/03/12):

African American Political Leaders and Activists Visit Israel

A group of African American politicians, consultants and activists arrived in Israel this week to participate in an American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF) Seminar. The group of 18 includes eight state and local elected officials and three appointed government officials, including the presidents of the city councils of Atlanta and Detroit. The other participants are all deeply involved in political and civic life in their communities, including five who are co-chairs for the DNC’s Generation44 fundraising initiative in their cities. A number of the seminar participants have already attended pro-Israel events in their communities and have shown interest in strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship. Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell and DeKalb County Commissioner Lee May passed Iranian divestment resolutions in their jurisdictions in 2009.
