Avigdor Lieberman to Jews worldwide: ‘You must love me’

Haaretz reports on Avigdor Lieberman's trip to speak at a Jewish National Fund event in London. Lieberman has been taken aback by criticism of his invitation from Zionist activists in the UK:

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Tuesday to a Jewish audience in London that he expects Jewish communities around the world to support whatever Israeli government is in power, regardless of its views.

Lieberman who was speaking at an event sponsored by the British branch of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) responded to the controversy within the Jewish community in London, following the objections of Jewish groups, including the Habonim Dror youth movement and the Reform and Liberal rabbis organizations, to his appearance.

"It is not my responsibility to give advice," said the foreign minister, who was greeted upon arrival at the Pillar Hotel in North London, by demonstrations of pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups outside, "but my expectations from all Jewish communities is first of all to support any government in Israel. It doesn't matter whether it's dovish or right wing, it's democratically elected.

"All Jewish people have a right to be in this discussion and I respect their right to protest but I expect all Jewish communities to support whatever Israel government there is," he added.

Got it? Only Jews "have a right to be in this discussion" and only as long as they support the Israeli government. Until then worldwide Jewry (and everyone else), shut yer piehole.

Here's video from his trip (didn't know Avigdor had a soft side, did you?):

  1. In all fairness to Lieberman, he’s never been “scared to confess what he’s feeling”

    • Theo says:

Just as Hitler, Mussolini and all other bloody dictators had no scruppel about their intentions.
Is there any difference between Lieberman and Göbbels? They both spread hate of others.

  2. Blake says:

The bouncer from Moldova who lives on an illegal settlement is in London? I thought they never allowed people who incited hatred into the UK. Or is it one rule for Israeli’s and another for the rest of the world!

    • FreddyV says:

Yes it is. Tzipi Livni was invited to the UK after Cast Lead. The British Government decided it was in their interests to maintain dialogue.

Israeli government resides in Jerusalem, and there is a frequent confusion between mundane Jerusalem and celestial Jerusalem. Perhaps Israeli government is angelic? (That would make former cabinet members and MPs fallen angels, I guess.)

In any case, one of Zionist principles that while all Jews may be created equal, they are not equal. By entering Israel a Jews acquires elevated status, and upon leaving, descents back to the lowly galut status.

With Israel/Eretz Israel the distinctions persist. For example, an IDF commander attacked by a group of Jews told journalists that he could not be expected to arrest fellow Jews, while other Jews, clearly inferior, are arrested on regular basis. Jews have three routes to perfection:

        a. personally participate in molding the Jewish destiny by facts on the ground, this should be done while living in a settlement

        b. religious perfection, best done with frequent visits to tombs of heroes and patriarchs

        c. becoming a munificent business tycoon

Only the third route can be perfected in galut, and needless to say, no category of perfect Jews was present at the protest.

i read about all the casting problems they had for the 3 stooges movie, but with ch’avi and bibi, there’s curly and moe. who to play larry, though?

  4. Refaat says:

ministers are supposed to be the best of the best. If avigdor Lieberman is the best of israel’s best, that tells a lot

adam you are too funny! that’s got to be original to MW!

ok, i will read the rest of the post now. i translated something over @ his facebookpage yesterday..wonder if it’s the same thing. i didn’t really ‘get’ the translation..thought it was more like ‘trust me’.

  6. i can’t stop laughing. now, if only we could get lieberman to sing this song as israel’s entry into eurovision! he’s so madonna.

“he expects Jewish communities around the world to support whatever Israeli government is in power, regardless of its views.”

This is from the my mother, drunk or sober school of diplomacy.
I suppose what would you expect a thug from the ex Soviet Union to say.

Presumably by the same token all that moaning about the Pharoah has to go and Pesach has to be reconfigured for 2013 with more emphasis placed on why the Egyptians were right.

  8. So if you’re Jewish it is incumbent on you to supports fascists like Lieberman, and apartheid? sounds like a good argument to leave the klan and join the human race.

  9. joec says:

Well, let’s all be extra-careful not to call anyone following these marching orders an “Israel Firster.” Remember, that would be “virulent hate speech” (link to articles.nydailynews.com).

  10. yourstruly says:

so as a jew I must support any & every israeli government, even though the actions of said government put america at risk, which means that my supporting the israeli government would turn me into an israel firster traitor? oh, but by backing the apartheid entity, it’ll be there for me should antisemitism flare up and force me to seek safe haven elsewhere? no, thanks, not going to fall for that one. instead, I’ll take my chances and stay here, fight antisemitism the best way I know, which is to participate in the struggle for justice in palestine, since it’s israel’s brutal occupation of that land that stokes whatever remains of antisemitism in today’s world, such that, delegitimize israel and antisemitism shrinks to a size that can be flushed down the toilet.

    • American says:

      Wise choice yourstruly….
Leiberman is such an imbecile….what gall to expect blind obedience to Israel by all the Jews. And how more stupid to say it in public.

      • seafoid says:

        I’m so hard to handle
        I’m selfish and I’m sad
Now I’ve gone and lost the best political support
        That I ever had
I wish I had a river I could skate away on

Oh, I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
        I wish I had a river
        I could skate away on
I made my people say goodbye

        • i was listening to that record yesterday. one of my favorites.

        • seafoid says:

It is such a beautiful song. I love the whole album.
I think she had to give up a baby for adoption . So sad and the “little green” song captures it.

        • seafoid says:

          another one for Avi

the coarse and white colored skin
it blends with the state you’re in
and the wetness of your eyes
against a sun that clouds blind
you ain’t saying nothing that i don’t already know
when you say love’s dimming light won’t shine on tomorrow

you ain’t doing nothing that i don’t already know
when you hide your sorry head in pillows
you fake a strained, sort of grin
that matches the shape you’re in
and accept any lies are truth
after the long year that we’ve been through
you ain’t doing nothing that i don’t already know
when you say life takes turns like fiery shadows

  11. chris o says:

I think your closing paragraph is unfair. I didn’t see him say “only” Jews have a right to be in the discussion. That may certainly be what he believes but he didn’t say that.

His statement doesn’t really make sense: “All Jewish people have a right to protest… and I respect their right to protest… but I expect all Jewish communities to support whatever Israeli government there is.” It is true that this is an internally contradictory statement but you can’t just completely ignore the first part of it.

  12. randclark says:

“…but I expect all Jewish communities to support whatever Israeli government there is.” This reminds me of all the attempts here to control the discussion within the Jewish community, e.g. the various Jewish Federations policing debate and going McCarthy on diverse points of view.

  13. eljay says:

    >> ” … my expectations from all Jewish communities is first of all to support any government in Israel. It doesn’t matter whether it’s dovish or right wing, it’s democratically elected.”

Unthinking, unquestioning loyalty. Click your boot-heels together and raise your arms!

    >> “All Jewish people have a right to be in this discussion … ”

I’m sure he meant to say “All Israeli people have a right to be in this discussion.” Unless…is he some sort of supremacist? 8-o

MY COMMENT: In other words, all Jews everywhere must march in lockstep as if they were prisoners at Sing Sing under the “Auburn system”* of the early 1800s! Now mush! Mush!
“I’ve been workin’ on the chain gang, all the live long day!
Hooh! Aah! Hooh! Aah! That’s the sound of the men working on the chain gang.”

Chain Gang, Sam Cooke (VIDEO, 02:38) – link to youtube.com

    * FROM WIKIPEDIA [ Auburn system]:

(excerpts) The Auburn system (also known as the New York System) is a penal method of the 19th century in which persons worked during the day in groups and were kept in solitary confinement at night, with enforced silence at all times. . .
. . . The Auburn system established several characteristics that were unique to the world of disciplinary conditions. Silence was the biggest factor in the line of rules the prisoners had to follow. [John D.] Cray wanted the prisoners to be completely silent. This lack of speaking takes away the prisoners’ “sense of self”. When the “sense of self” was taken away, many convicts became complacent and obedient to the warden’s wishes. . .

    FROM WIKIPEDIA [Lockstep]:

(excerpt) Lockstep marching or simply lockstep refers to marching, in the USA, in a very close single file in such a way that the leg of each person in the file moves in the same way and at the same time as the corresponding leg of the person immediately in front of him, so that their legs stay very close all the time.
Originally it was used in drilling soldiers. Each soldier stepped on the point just vacated by the foot of the soldier in front of him. Thus the soldiers stayed in position to form close files.[1]
Lockstep marching was a characteristic trait of American prisons of the 19th century.[2] “Inmates formed in single file, right hand on the shoulder of the man in front, left hand on the side; the convicts then stepped off in unison, raising the right foot high and shuffling with the left.”[3] The reason for the shuffling step was the chain that connected the legs of a chain gang. . .
