NJ Republican candidate for Congress spent election day in Israel, meeting with Netanyahu

Boteach and Netanyahu
Boteach and Netanyahu

Earlier today I did a post on Rep. Bill Pascrell’s victory over an opponent supported by the Israel lobby in the Democratic primary in the new 9th Congressional District in New Jersey.

Well it turns out Pascrell’s next opponent, Republican primary winner Shmuley Boteach, rabbi and writer, is completely mobbed up with the Israel lobby. Here’s Boteach writing about a recent meeting with Israeli P.M. Benjamin Netanyahu on Huffpo. Boteach brought his daughter. She’s serving in the Israeli army. Why is this stuff on Huffpo?

Oh– and Boteach met with Netanyahu, and Netanyahu aide Ron Dermer, formerly of Miami, on the day of the primary. He was in Israel for his sister-in-law’s wedding. Wait, where are his priorities?

This is why I have trouble with the claim that it’s anti-semitic to speak about dual loyalty. If this isn’t dual loyalty, what is? Notice Netanyahu’s answer to that very question below: your daughter is fighting for America. These guys really are deluded.

I brought my daughter Chana, who is a soldier in the Israeli army, to the meeting and the prime minister welcomed her warmly. I told the prime minister that my wife and I were immensely proud of our daughter’s service in the Israel Defense Forces. I mentioned the well-circulated press reports of how my upcoming opponent, Bill Pascrell, had refused to repudiate some Arab-American supporters who had accused Congressman Steve Rothman, the opponent whom Pascrell recently defeated, of dual loyalties over his support of Israel. In particular Aref Assaf, president of the American Arab Forum, had written an op-ed in the New Jersey Star-Ledger titled “Rothman is Israel’s man in District 9” where he asserted that “as total and blind support for Israel becomes the only reason for choosing Rothman, voters who do not view the elections in this prism will need to take notice. Loyalty to a foreign flag is not loyalty to America’s.”

With Rothman being accused of dual loyalties simply over a pro-Israel voting record in government, what could I, who has a daughter serving in Israel’s military, expect from these same political opponents? What charges would they lodge against me? How ugly would the attacks be?

The Prime Minister looked at me solemnly and said, “Tell them your daughter is not only fighting to protect Israel. She’s fighting to protect America. Israel is the front line in the war for freedom.” Indeed. Israel, an America-style democracy in the world’s most dangerous region, seeks to live free amid being surrounded by an ocean of tyranny.

there’s simply no end to this hasbara.

i had no idea boteach was running for office. he’s a bonafide nutcase. check out his demeanor in this larry king segment, he goes ballistic. please do not construe i am a supporter of jews4jesus because i am definitely not. but larry has to shut boteach up numerous times. he comes off unhinged and fanatical. the complete opposite of calm, composed and in control.

In the circle jerk, Larry King refereeing, Rabbi Boteach equates Jews4Jesus (& Christianity generally) with those who made soap and lampshades out of Jews–a charge against the Nazis that has long been totally discredited and sans any evidence at all. Then he equates them with blonde, blue-eyed racists; then again, with Jim Crow anti-black racists. Then he says they abrogate personal accountability/responsiblity by saying Jews4Jesus claim you can be saved by (Southern Baptist) Christian faith alone (Belief in Jesus Christ alone will get you to heaven). “Why do they regard Judaism as an inferior faith, Jews who don’t believe in Jesus as inferior?” King asks him is it fair to hang the Holocaust round the neck of Christians? Botech is totally obsessed with his Grade C horror movie vision of victim Jew in a world of cartoon Goy devils. This is an American political leader?

      On Larry King Live
Both rabbis, Hier and Boteach say that God judges men on an individual basis.
That’s not true according to Judaism. Jews are redeemed/salvaged as a people. The rest of mankind (gentiles) are judged on an individual basis.

The Jewish authority on the matter is Maimonides. He said: “The righteous among the nations will have a place in the world to come.”

In ‘the world to come’ there will be the Jews as a people sitting face to face with God (some Jews will be sitting in the back rows some in the front) – and there will be a tiny number of righteous gentiles also sitting there. Who are these ‘righteous gentiles’? – At Yad Vashem there is the ‘Avenue of the Righteous’. Who are they? – For instance Oskar Schindler and others whos saved Jewish lives. But if someone saved Polish lives from the Nazis that doesn’t qualify him as a ‘righteous among the nations’, according to Yad Vashem.

The ignorance on this website is utterly sickening. Yad Vashem is a memorial to the Jews murdered during the Holocaust and also those who helped save some of them. Nothing more nor less. There is no implication that someone who saved non-Jewish Poles is not a righteous person. If someone wants to create a memorial for them nobody is stopping them. Hop to it if you think it should be done.

skandall – in other words, Jews take care of their own, let others take care of theirs and build their own yad vashems, right?

The criticism here goes to the fact that the holocaust that happened to the jews took out all the oxygen in the West – and just about all the compensation from Germany. Along with much of the compassion. What was left for the Poles? the Gypsies? the czechs? the Russians? the Dutch?

So, what people are talking about here is this compassion deficit – Jewish people mourning for their own – sometimes at the expense of others who suffered just as much and lost as much, if not more.

That deficit in compassion may be one of the fatal flaws in the zionism that sought to profit at the expense of others — what was done to us justifies anything we do to anyone else.

So, here we seek to enlarge the concept of the ‘righteous gentile” to encompass those who were there for non-Jews too. Got any problem with that? or is your humanity limited to that which is “good for the Jews”?

‘righteous gentiles’ and ‘the world to come’
I am quoting from Peter Novick, The Holocaust in American Life, chapter 9 (since I have the German edition only I have to translate back into English):

        – “… the ‘righteous gentiles’ – the term officially used by Yad Vashem to denote the Christian Europeans who helped to save Jews.”

Novick writes in a footnote to the above quote:

        – “The term … stems from the writings of Maimonides from the 12 century: ‘Righteous gentiles have a place in the world to come’. Maimonides held the traditional view that all Jews except those who had commited the gravest sins, will a have a place in the world to come; whereas only a tiny minority of gentiles will be fit.”
        1. all of Jewry will be redeemed (with a few exceptions)
        2. a tiny minority of gentiles will (maybe not exclusively but primarily those who saved Jewish lives) – See also the talmudic saying: “He, who saves one life of Israel, saves the entire world.”

“There is no implication that someone who saved non-Jewish Poles is not a righteous person.”

Yes, there most certainly is. In fact, the name of the “award” bestowed — Righteous among the Nations — absolutely reeks of it.

From one of my favorite studiers of the Israeli psyche on lack of empathy:

Refusal to take responsibility and lack of empathy

In his book People of the Lie, M. Scott Peck wrote that evil is not merely wrong-doing. Although most of us are not capable of murder, all of us do occasionally behave badly. It’s human to make mistakes, to lash out in pain, anger or frustration. This happens all the time in ordinary human relationships. But according to Peck what distinguishes evil people from ordinary flawed human beings, is the denial of responsibility. Even when their deeds are exposed and even when confronted with the immense suffering they are causing their victims, people capable of evil never admit that they are wrong and refuse to take responsibility for their actions.

I won’t go into all the detail and obvious contradictions in Israel’s behaviour and its official narrative about the flotilla attack. These have already been pointed out and analysed well by a number of writers. What stands out for me in Israel’s way of explaining its actions, is its utter lack of interest in taking responsibility. Even the language used by Israel reflects this. Comments like, ‘We regret the loss of life’, make it sound as if the unfortunate event just happened, whereas it didn’t just happen, they did it.

In order to avoid responsibility people who are capable of evil typically do a number of things. First they lie about what happened — or rather what they did. When the lies don’t hold up so well and there is evidence to the contrary, they resort to explaining why they were justified in doing what they did. And if this ‘defence’ crumbles, they then fall back on a victim act, ‘We’re not bad, we behaved morally and correctly. If anything went wrong, it’s their fault, they made us do it…’.

This defence is usually mounted in the context of a total lack of empathy towards the victims. It is this lack of empathy that should serve as the real warning sign that something is badly wrong with the person’s claims to innocence and his or her character. People who are so defensive and so unable to care about the effects that their actions have on others are serious suspects in my eyes.

The ability to experience empathy is crucial in all human relationships. Without it there is no basis for trust, for growth or for sorting out conflict in a way that preserves dignity and does justice to all parties involved. Lack of empathy demonstrates that one party simply cannot see the humanity of the other and identify with their experience and their feelings. It demonstrates a lack of human concern about what happens to them.

People cannot commit crimes against others when they feel empathy and a sense of shared humanity towards them. In fact if every single person in the world was capable of unshakeable empathy, there would be no war and no crime at all. Military forces put a lot of effort into teaching their soldiers not to feel empathy towards the ‘enemy’. When they succeed, it makes it possible for ordinary people in uniform to kill other ordinary people and even their children. It is how Israeli soldiers for instance can be caring towards their own families, friends and neighbours but completely heartless towards the Palestinians and their families and children, and in the case of the flotilla, towards the civilian peace activists. I always look for empathy in people’s narrative and when it is missing, that’s when I begin to worry.”

        >> “It diminishes and really dilutes what the Holocaust is.”

The Holocaust is “The Bestest Genocide Ever!” (TM) and, apparently, it’s just too delicious for Jews to want to share it with anyone else.

You’re right, American, it does boil down to lack of empathy, and the soldier is trained to have none towards whomever he is directed to fight. This point has been made obliquely, implicitly, in many classic war movies, usually where the GI finds a picture from home in the pocket of some enemy soldier he has just killed during the battle. A whole movie was devoted to this theme lately, to wit, Clint Eastwood’s Letter From Home.

War propaganda intent has always been to dehumanize the opponent; a good historical example of this is Allied propaganda against baby-eating “The Hun” apropos WW1, and a factual example beyond a war poster is the lie that the WW1 German Army massacred Belgians. Hitler of course, learned this lesson well, as he writes in Mein Kampf. Nobody learned the lesson better than Goebbels.

PS: I am aware that during WW2 the racist Imperial Japanese army treated POWs
atrociously. The Germans treated Allied POWs much, much better as a whole.

      • Stephen Shenfield

How the Germans treated POWs depended on their race. “Aryans” were treated well, but millions of Soviet POWs were left to starve.

Your reference to Rabbi Boteach as one who “comes off unhinged and fanatical” strikes me, Annie, as a bit excessive and overly selective. At times he seems more intense than the others, but he remains throughout equally articulate with them. And by the way, I think all of them are thoroughly ridiculous, each a powerful exemplar for avoiding a theocentric focus and modus vivendi. All of these debaters seem like reasonable, intelligent, and probably more or less educated human beings who for whatever reasons have had logic excised from their systems. They might all even make great neighbors, but, among other thoughts, as that great contemporary philosopher Woody Allen once observed (and I paraphrase), Jews should launch a class-action suit against God for nonfeasance. Now here are several grown-ups – at least, they look like grown-ups – jabbering away like automatons about some extraterrestrial omnipotent, omniscient being thoroughly involved in promoting our well-being or letting us have it if we step out of bounds, etc., but it seems to me that the most mature and intelligent way to react is either switch the thing off or quote good old Puck: “Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

I don’t know how long its been since I’ve read anything in the mainstream media that made me half so delighted.

Keep it going; pour it on, make ’em an example, let everyone know this is fairer than fair game, and indeed the absolute crux of elections. Opens the door for letters to the editor talking about same, and then other media having to report same when Boteach loses, and then that this is fair play for candidates facing the other Boteach’s of the country.

Classic antisemitism is to blame others for your own problems. Blaming Jews is very convenient and as Boteach says, focusing on the Jews is an abrogation of ones own responsibilities. Leave the Jews be. This website and its soldiers show the opposite.

P.S. FROM WIKIPEDIA [Time Will Crawl]:

(excerpt) “Time Will Crawl” is the second track on David Bowie’s album ‘Never Let Me Down’ and was issued as the second single from the album.
The lyric is themed around the pollution and destruction of the planet by industry (Bowie has cited hearing of the Chernobyl disaster in April 1986 as the genesis of the lyric), and is often praised by critics for its restrained production compared to Bowie’s other work of the era. Interviewed in 1987 and asked about the lyrical content of “Time Will Crawl,” Bowie said it “deals with the idea that someone in one’s own community could be the one responsible for blowing up the world.”[1] Bowie also stated at the time that it was his favorite song from the album,[2] and later put the song on his list of all-time favorites.[3]
In 2008, David Bowie released a newly-recorded version of the song (the “MM Remix”) on his iSelect album. . .

Neocons ship hundreds of thousands of Americans, husbands and wives, overseas to invade ME countries, decimating American families creating widows and PTSD basket cases who are incapable of raising children after 10+ years of constant war.

Granted the neocon families are doing alright – they don’t fight and die, so their famlies are intact living safely in Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Rockville, etc.

Working with nothing but an Internet connection, a couple of cellphones and a steady supply of weed, the two friends — one with a few college credits, the other a high school dropout — had beaten out Fortune 500 giants like General Dynamics to score the huge arms contract. With a single deal, two stoners from Miami Beach had turned themselves into the least likely merchants of death in history.”

“Efraim Diveroli, by contrast, knew exactly what he wanted to be: an arms dealer. It was the family business. His father brokered Kevlar jackets and other weapons-related paraphernalia to local police forces, and his uncle B.K. sold Glocks, Colts and Sig Sauers to law enforcement. Kicked out of school in the ninth grade, Diveroli was sent to Los Angeles to work for his uncle. As an apprentice arms dealer, he proved to be a quick study. By the time he was 16, he was traveling the country selling weapons.

“Oddly, the story also implicates Congressman Henry Waxman for his alleged “silence” on the issue, when, according to Weekly author Penn Bullock, Waxman promised to conduct an investigation into the munitions fraud and any connection to the Botach family.

Bullock writes that Waxman’s 2008 inquiry “aimed to answer a fundamental question: How did Botach’s inexperienced 21-year-old grandson Efraim Diveroli ‘get a sensitive, $300 million contract to supply ammunition to Afghan forces?’”

Congressman Waxman issued a statement explaining: “When I was Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee we began an investigation into the procurement process at the Department of Defense that allowed AEY to receive a $300 million contract to supply ammunition to Afghan forces. In June 2008 we held a hearing on the issue in the hope that we could learn what went wrong so that we could rebuild our procurement system and protect the interests of taxpayers.”

Waxman did not allude to the outcome of that investigation, except to say that shortly thereafter he was elected Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, while the investigation remained with the House Oversight Committee.”

silverstein has a great article on the rabbinical mafia in israel, the jewish equivalent of robertson and hagee and others squeezing their eyes shut in prayer, while doing interest calculations in their head.

a few bit biographies of those devoted to g_d:

        ♦ Rabbi Pinchas Abuhatzeira, $335-million

Abuhatzeira inherited his wealth from his father, who was murdered last year by a follower who’d paid thousands of shekels for a promised cure that didn’t work.

        ♦ Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto, $18-million

Pinto collaborated with Ross Torossian and Ofer Biton to extort campaign donations from Pinto’s wealthy New York followers on behalf of the Congressional campaign of Republican Michael Grimm. The pair leaked damaging information about the rabbi to the press, after which Biton urged the rabbi to put Torossian on retainer so he could put an end to the very PR damage the flack was causing him. A classic con reminiscent of a Mafia-style protection racket.

Biton, who served as the rabbi’s gatekeeper for a number of years, owns a Manhattan business that sells pornography. It appears that millions of dollars that were collected on the rabbi’s behalf were siphoned off by Biton and Torossian.

Thanks for added info, Charles Barwin. So he’s got daughter in the IDF (“fighting for the USA”), a son who is a shoo-in for West Point but won’t cut his beard, and a nephew arms dealer contracted with Pentagon facing a slew of federal charges. Why he’s just another ethnic American patriotic white like those “micks” Audie Murphey and Sergeant York!

He was already sentenced. Guess the rest!

Should have gotten 4(!) years, but the judge let him serve two of those years concurrently, against prosecution wishes.

He was quickly caught up in another FBI weapons sting, and was forced to serve the WHOLE four years.

“Diveroli, now 25, told Presnell he turned every blessing God gave him into a curse. He told the judge he didn’t want to return to his old lifestyle of drug, alcohol and gambling addictions.

But on Thursday, Presnell [the judge] told the attorneys he questioned who the real Diveroli is.

“I don’t really know,” Presnell said. “I doubt Mr. Diveroli knows.”

Presnell contrasted Diveroli’s remorseful, courtroom statements with that of a recorded jail phone call between Diveroli and his father that the prosecution played last week. In that call, which Presnell characterized as being “shocking,” Diveroli was angry, demanding and condescending.

Seems the whole family is in the arms business.

“The Botach family of Los Angeles is among the more unusual of the very rich. Yoav Botach is a wealthy landlord. He founded, and his son now owns, an arms dealership in an unsettling locale for one: South Central. And his grandson was convicted of conspiracy for peddling to the U.S. Army decomposing ammunition — so old that it was traced to the factories of Mao Tse-tung — as part of a $300 million contract to arm the Afghan government.”

And seems that Congressman Waxman lead a sham investigation which protected the Botech family. Waxman was conveniently moved to another committee as reported by the Jewish Journal.

Lots of drama in the Botech family.

Anybody fighting the in the IDF is most certainly not fighting to protect the US, but to undermine the US and drag it into endless conflicts based on a racist, separatist worldview. Boteach is another rep for Israel who has little interest in the US other than benefitting from its tolerance, a tolerance which he and his associates repudiate in the state they worship.

Ask Rahm Emmanuel. Immediately after returning from his “jeep repair” job with the Mo… err, IDF, he returned to host country and Chaired Clinton’s 1992 Campaign Finance Committee:

“At the start of then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton’s presidential primary campaign, Emanuel was appointed to direct the campaign’s finance committee.[25] Emanuel insisted that Clinton schedule a lot of time for fundraising and greatly delay campaigning in New Hampshire. Clinton agreed and embarked on an aggressive fundraising campaign across the nation.”

Col Patrick Lang over at sicsempertyranis has said this…

“I was on the damage assesment board that looked at what Pollard had done for Israel and to the US.

Most of the purloined material had nothing to do with the ME and everything to do with the Warsaw Pact. The Israelis wanted the material for “trade goods.”

Pollard was 150% Israel’s guy then and now. The Israelis once again betrayed our trust. Any “American” who wants Pollard pardoned should emigrate to Israel with him if he is released. pl”

      That’s great to hear Amar.

I stopped posting on Huff Post in disgust over their nonsense censorship of comments; fact based comments, often supported with links, not a shred of ad hominem – and still not being approved. Also – they had a few regular users running an external campaign to get people opposed to Israel booted from HP, and HP did nothing about it despite such a campaign violating their TOS.

It’s logical that people will become better and better informed about Israel as time passes, and good on all those people who didn’t leave HP.

That was definitely my experience at HuffPo. Another move they had was to close comments when a Z-teamer was getting shellacked in the comments. They were all, as you noted, thoughtful, well-written, and not hateful or ad hominem in the least (in fact…they often left up on a regular basis troll posts that could have been authored by Stormfront).

An anti-Bush essay could have comments in the thousands but a Dershowitz screed against Dr. Finkelstein would be closed before it even reached triple digits.

DKos would have the Team Shalom start filling the comment thread with recipes as a sign of their complete dismissal and disdain of opposition arguments.

It used to be against the law to join the armed forces of a foreign nation,
today american jews send their sons and daughters to serve in the IDF and brag about it! One must ask, which country do those traitors consider theirs?

Millions of americans live in foreign countries and vote, if they want to, for a president, so I do not find anything wrong if american citizens in Israel vote in the coming elections. What I find distasteful is when americans in the USA elect politicians whose only interests are to serve and further the cause of Israel. All those should be registered as foreign agents.

Christianity is nothing, but a different form of judaism, both based on the old testament. They are two cousins fighting over the right to represent the true beliefe, forgeting that they have the same grandfathers and belong to the same tribe. Christianity changed a lot during the past 2,000 years and I am sure the original was very similar to judaism at that age. The priests of both religions fought the competitions and teached hatred of the other and to a certain extend they still do it today.
If we ever want to clean up this globe, start with the “hollymen” of all religions!!

This is nonsense, Theo. I think there was a Congressional ban against Americans serving in foreign armies in the 1790s, and I don’t know when it was lifted. It is clear, however, that Americans have trained and served in foreign armies long before the IDF existed, and they continue to do so. As long as the US is not at war with any of those armies/countries, dual loyalty issues do not arise. In fact, the practice has long been advocated as benefitting the US army. See for instance this debate in Congress (1819)

Our every day lives are governed by WRITTEN and UNWRITTEN laws and those you do not find under any paragraph.
If you join a foreign army, you swear allegiance to a nation that is not yours. If you do that, you may lose your american citizenship, so to any intelligent person it must mean, that such deed is against the law, otherwise such punishment would not be possible.
I am aware of the facts that we have and had americans fighting in foreign wars all over this globe, but they usually do not wear the uniform of that nation or swear allegiance to it. They are paid mercenaries, with or without permission from Washington. We have military in 80 different nations and those are there with full knowledge of our government, sometimes not even in uniform.

You went back 200 years with your illustration, check the 1930 when german-americans wanted to fight with Hitler or the WWI. There is something spooking around my brain about that time.

It’s more complicated than that, Theo. Over the centuries some followers of Jesus have tried to show that Jesus was NOT Jewish nor did he represent the ‘sequel’ to the Old Testament. Marcion was smacked down by those who sought to ingratiate the new Christian sect with the Roman authorities; Mithraism — based on more ancient, equitable, and ethical Zoroastrian principles — was erased from history/New Testament canon by Constantine at a time when Rome was on the outs with the remnants of the Persian/Parthian empire.
Until Luther/printing press, Christianity was largely what the Roman hierarchy said it was.
Luther and following gave actual access to the Written Word and a lot of people said Oh My God, I don’t believe THIS stuff! This OT is a chronicle of mayhem!
Explorations in Egypt & Mesopotamia brought the originality & authenticity of OT into serious question. British, Germans, and Jews took different approaches to confronting the challenge of archeological evidence vs. the “true” “revealed” word of the “Holy bible.”
British said the Bible was true: truthiness as well as notion that Jews held the deed to Palestine served British imperial interests — also, British interests in promoting their tourist industry — remember that line from Canterbury Tales: “So longen folke to go on pilgrimages” ? If you lived on an island that had lousy weather, wouldn’t you want to “pilgrimage” to someplace warm?
The Germans were more interested in literary criticism of bible texts, and more proud of their intellectual abilities than keen on colonization and empire building.

Jews, prominent among them Moses Mendelssohn, saw an advantage to enhancing the Jewish-ness of Jesus — a way to meld recently emancipated European Jews with the surrounding Christian community. Jews recast the Bible — see The Hebrew Bible Reborn: From Holy Scripture to the Book of Books: A History of Biblical Culture and the Battles over the Bible in Modern Judaism — to transform it into the national, land-granting epic of the secularized Jewish people, creating of this new and improved Hebrew Scripture a Title Insurance Policy underwriting the original ‘deed’ to the Holy Land (a label affixed by Constantine’s mother).

Blackstone and Scofield inserted ‘riders’ into U.S. bibles; insurance that American Christian Protestants would fight for Holy Zion with the last measure of Christian/American blood and treasure.

In Germany in the inter-war period, German Christian scholars led by Grunmann sought to separate the Jesus they sought to emulate from an Old Testament context. Susannah Heschel calls this project “antisemitic.” Indeed it is: Germans reasoned that Germany is NOT a semitic culture, it is an Indo-European culture; the foundation of Indo-European philology/culture is, ahem, Aryan: ancient Aryans influenced the broad swathe of peoples, languages, and cultures from Iranian origins on the Scythian plateau (get it? — Aryan –>Iran) across Europe and leaping over the Ireland (Aryan –> Ireland).

Amy Jill Levine is Big Nurse in charge of administering Booster Shots against a flare-up of seeking to identify one’s own Jesus independent of Hebrew doctrine. She is ably assisted by Abe Foxman who makes frequent visits to the Vatican to keep the Roman hierarchy in tow.
Roman Catholicism was only recently enfolded into fundamentalist/evangelicalism; older RC’s can still recite their Catechism, but the advent of ‘television ministries’ and especially EWTN, with its stable of converts from Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Episcopal orders, have leapt on the zionized bible with both feet — the left foot is ignorance and the right foot is gullibility.

PS. Thomas Jefferson anticipated German literary criticism by about 50 years. By ~1810 he had pried the Jesus out of his Hebrew and ‘miraculous’ matrix to find only the Human Jesus. Jefferson considered this Human Jesus the most sublimely moral of all beings. If Jefferson were alive today, it is not unlikely Abe Foxman would go out gunnin’ for him, and he’d get in trouble with the U.S. State Dept office to monitor antisemitism.

Ernest Renan undertook a somewhat similar project ~1845; Shlomo Sand writes about Renan here: On the Nation and the Jewish People.

Perhaps the weirdest was when I was about 10 or 11 yrs. An apoplectic, bulging eyed, “How dare you even ask such a question?” spat at me. For some reason the image of a paddle for churning milk stuck in my mind. Stir with it and you get butter. If not, why are there paddles for churning milk?

“I’ve been asking for about 55 years where G-/0d was during the Holocaust. The answers have been to anything but the question.”

Interesting. Issac Bashevis Singer struggled with the same question. I think one of the answers is that evil and suffering compose existence and that they preceded the Holocaust. The Holocaust was gratuitous evil committed by human beings. The problem with the question in relation to the Holocaust is that human suffering is and was not confined to the Holocaust.

There is another form of evil called natural evil which causes non-human animal suffering and even human suffering at times in the natural world. What’s to be noted is that human beings are fully in control of gratuitous evil which only our specie is capable of. The argument that war is the condition of man and bad things happen is nonsense. It is our responsibility as right-minded citizens of the world rather than just a country to oppose this gratuitous evil wherever it may lurk.

The current laws are set forth in Section 958-960 of Title 18 of the United States Code. In Wiborg v. U.S. , 163 U.S. 632 (1896), the Supreme Court endorsed a lower court ruling that it was not a crime under U.S. law for an individual to go abroad for the purpose of enlisting in a foreign army; however, when someone has been recruited or hired in he United States, a violation may have occurred. The prosecution of persons who have violated 18 U.S.C. 958-960 is the responsibility of the Department of Justice.

My Yad Vashem and the Jewish/Israeli mission
I was at the Yad Vashem Memorial on Christmas eve 2002. The place is gruesome. Appropriate to what it is supposed to memorise. There was only me, an American couple and a group of young American Yeshiva students with their rabbi. No other tourists. – I was standing near the American group, listening to what the rabbi explained to them. For instance, he said: ‘The Nazis didn’t define the Jews properly according to halachic law’. ‘In Germany, you were a Jew at home and a German in the street’ etc.. He explained that the cobblestones on the ground we were standing on, were the original cobblestones from the Prag ghetto.

One of the American students came up to me to ask who I was. I said, I am German.
He was surprised but friendly and told me I should talk to their rabbi who, he said, had been in Hamburg/Germany and knew German.

When I left the memorial, the group of American Yeshiva students were standing outside. Their rabbi told them: “We have a mission in the world” – I am wondering to this day: what’s their mission?
