Last week we pointed out that Alan Dershowitz gets access in the White House even though he calls Obama Neville Chamberlain. Well here’s another milestone in Dershowitz’s journey into crazy judgment, a piece in the Jerusalem Post calling Alice Walker a neo-Nazi because she has refused to grant an Israeli publisher the rights to The Color Purple because she is boycotting the country.
Dershowitz smears Walker with everything he’s got. I think this is another sign that BDS is taking hold and advocates are concerned.
This is the moral and legal equivalent of neo-Nazi author David Duke disallowing his books to be sold to Black and Jewish readers.
There is an appropriate moral and legal response to Walker’s bigotry. The publisher who had sought permission to publish Walker’s book in Hebrew should simply go ahead and do it – without her permission and over her objection…
Walker participated in unlawful efforts to break Israel’s entirely lawful military blockade of the Gaza Strip – a blockade designed to prevent Hamas and other terrorist groups from bringing to Gaza weapons that are aimed at Israeli civilians.
In doing so, she has provided material support for terrorism, in violation of the law of the United States and several other countries.
Her bigotry against the Jewish state and in support of terrorists knows no bounds. Now she is even prepared to impose censorship of her own writings as a tool in support of terrorism….
Her writings should be published in Hebrew, whether she likes it or not, and the royalties should be contributed to the NAACP

“There is an appropriate moral and legal response to Walker’s bigotry. The publisher who had sought permission to publish Walker’s book in Hebrew should simply go ahead and do it – without her permission and over her objection..”
so the appropriate legal response is to breaach copyright and steal her work? Ah Dersh, the humanitarian for torturer and lawyer for breaking the law.
If she is such a fascist, [two ways to complete the sentence]
the book should be a smashing success in Israel.
the book should be translated without permission and then boycotted, and the publisher should be boycotted until they go bankrupt.
Alice Walker’s decision not to publish it into Hebrew is wrong in my opinion.
The book, The Color of Purple, was one of the most successful anti-racist books and films of the past century and if Israel needs something then it’s that book.
Still, even as I deem her judgement misguided, the collective attack on her as this dangerous anti-Semite just shows how sadly all too many Jews have one set of standards for Gentile whites and one entirely different reserved for Jewish whites.
And I see this more, in fact, from so-called liberal Jews in the public arena(Dersh is an easy target but there are more sophisticated ones who hold the same pattern). And this incident highlights that. Dersh was the craziest, but he wasn’t alone in his double standard by exempting Jewish whites from a standard they would never extempt gentile whites.
But maybe I am wrong.. Israel after all, according to it’s interior minister, ‘belongs to the white man’ so maybe Ms. Walker isn’t that welcome there anyway.
I respect Ms. Walker’s decision (and Dershowitz’ remarks are, of course, beneath contempt), but I think Naomi Klein found a better solution:
What an utterly sensible way to go about this. Another relatively decent publishing house might be Resling. But yeah.
Here’s the story of Andalus. Great reading.
link to jadaliyya.com
Thanks Shmuel. Klein genuinely tries to do the right thing at every turn.
As a practical matter, what she did is a best possible case under the circumstances.
But the [small because it is a] theoretical quibble is that it is impossible to separate Israel from the Occupation. Any economic benefits that ripple out into the Israeli economy (e.g. when Anadalus employees buy stuff in Israel using revs from Klein’s book sales) almost certainly concentrate up into Israeli orgs and power centers that perpetuate the Occupation.
But again, what Klein did does seem like a practical net benefit from the messaging perspective.
I’m sure she is approaching this decision as part of a larger cultural boycott action. Since she is an artist and novelist of fame, she is using her own personal work here to make a statement but it’s still would have fallen under the umbrella of the cultural boycott.
I don’t think Israeli society is capable of self-reflection to such an extent that it can change the course of current events. It’s a small country and it still can’t achieve any kind of cathartic moment with all the craziness and attention paid to its problems (or the perception of such focus; narcissism).
The US is a much larger country and is also not capable of that kind of self-reflection.
But it’s a different issue here. We have corporate oligarchies, lobbyists for industry and foreign countries (like the Jewish State), etc. all subverting our own national interests by telling us what is good for THEM, is good for us – by enriching the politicians who peddle their bullshit message.
It doesn’t absolve us from our own racism, ignorance and political biases – but the notion that Israel or Zionist American Jewry are concerned about ‘America’ by promoting war with Iran/settlements/apartheid/immigration HERE and tepid, kids-gloves, hand-wringing of Israel’s expulsion of Sudanese and other African refugees – is abso-friggin-lately absurd.
People like ‘hophmi’ (who is a member of the ADL and the AJC apparently) are Israel-firsters and sincerely anti-American and intellectually dishonest, liars.
A more extreme case, FredoBlogs, defends Johnathan Pollard – a traitor who sold his country out – by equivocating his crimes to that of much lesser crimes to the Lockerbie bomber or the odd Palestinian suicide bomber whereas ignoring the simple fact that Israel has killed MORE PALESTINIAN CHILDREN than Palestinian militants have killed Israelis IN GENERAL since the second Intifada.
Oh, and he also equates Pollard to Bradley Manning – Manning who exposed the US government’s immoral and often illegal practices. That is of a completely different nature and context – in no subtle way – than what the Zionist traitor, Pollard did.
But Freddy has justified even the rampant pedophilia scandal in the Orthodox Jewish community as reported by failedmessiah.com and even the mainstream news outlets.
He and other Zionist charlatans were quick to obfuscate and do damage control/PR FOR PEDOPHILIA, so long as it was tangentially related to Zionism (unless by implication, we are to take them at their ‘word’ here; that word being, insecurity).
Kraus: decision not to publish it into Hebrew
This is not correct. She decided not to give an Israeli publisher the rights to publish. She boycotts the publisher, not the Hebrew language.
Exactly. Its something how many news stories about this focused on”Hebrew Translation”.
‘Hebrew, translate’
Neither of those words appear in her statement.
link to pacbi.org
Instead she says…”Thank you so much for wishing to PUBLISH (emphasis mine) my novel THE COLOR PURPLE. It isn’t possible for me to permit this at this time..”
It misrepresents the meaning of her protest entirely…’she is protesting the Hebrew language not an Israeli publisher.’ Such sheit.
“She boycotts the publisher, not the Hebrew language.”
Yes, but for some reason I an unable to understand (which, I suppose, makes it very little different from a lots of other things) Krauss has a habit of adopting right-wing Zionist contexts.
That Walker is snubbing Hebrew, for all the wrong reasons, (and not the Israeli economy, for all the right ones), is the Zionist line.
Alice walker’s book is wasted on most israelis anyways. you wouldn’t want to hear how a large chunk (a majority) of the great Israeli populus speaks of blacks in general – not just the US. There are even more than a few in the country that think slavery was a fine system and too bad it had to be dismantled. If someone ever cared to translate a snap shot of the commentary heard and read in mains street and mainstream publications, there would be shock waves reverberating through the world. Of course, I fear for the sanity of such a translator – one can walk along in the mud only so long before one either gets stuck or the shoes have to be abandoned.
When are people going to tell the truth about just how utterly racist israeli society is? IMO, there’s the language barrier, since the worst is said in Hebrew in living rooms and coffee shops all over the land of milk and honey. But there are many who understand enough hebrew to get the gist of it, but they make only a few noises, don’t they (hear some of the good noise makers on +972, a great forum that caters to too small a clientelle).
Sometimes I think that publishing books like Walker’s book in Hebrew is throwing pearls to the hogs. There is no chance that Israeli consciousness can be raised through this or any other great book. That is, other than that way too miniscule portion of israelis where enlightenment was ever allowed to break in through the cracks (cf. again +972 and sprinkling of a few others)..
Alas, one can’t penetrate a cult easily and the israeli/zionist cult is less permeable than most. israel reminds me more and more of the Branch davidians. Except for scale and reach there are eery parallels. Would it have helped Koresh’s followers were we able to sneak the Color Purple into their compound? (and the spoke English too, last I heard)
Instead of wasting time, we should concentrate on how we could advertise and give credence to Alice’s brave action far and wide. We should especially make an effort to get the commendable reasons for her actions out into the black community in the US. I would even go further and allow black people a window into hearing exactly what the majority of israelis think about them their intelligence and their fellow Africans who may share a distant heritage.
Once again, I agree with you, Danaa.
This: “I would even go further and allow black people a window into hearing exactly what the majority of israelis think about them their intelligence and their fellow Africans who may share a distant heritage.”
And this: “Alas, one can’t penetrate a cult easily and the israeli/zionist cult is less permeable than most.”
And this: “When are people going to tell the truth about just how utterly racist israeli society is? IMO, there’s the language barrier, since the worst is said in Hebrew in living rooms and coffee shops all over the land of milk and honey. . . . Sometimes I think that publishing books like Walker’s book in Hebrew is throwing pearls to the hogs. There is no chance that Israeli consciousness can be raised through this or any other great book.”
You’ve hit the bullseye, Danaa. What Klein does with her tribal objection is because she’s white, Jewish, and Canadian. Big whoop; it’s good for publicity, especially her largesse. Has nothing to Alice Walker’s experience, which was life and death when she was first involved with SNCC. Under no circumstances was Naomi Klein ever denied personhood because of her skin color, religion, or nationhood. There is no comparison with Walker’s circumstances, from which Walker makes her objections. None.
Is this Phil or Dershowitz speaking? I’m, confused – Israel’s siege of Gaza is legal is la-la land only.
thanks sumud..fixed!
Keep it up, Dersh. Your hyperbolic discourse is one big help to those who might pause to wonder if there isn’t something to BDS after all.
Dershowitz is freaking crazy ……….maybe all his apocalyptic foaming at the mouth will give him a cerebral hemorrhage.
Kudos to Alice!
Dershowitz is Harvard, you know.
I still have that news clip from Chicago Tribune of 1999 when the Jewish Comedian Mason refused to share the podium with another comedian in a show of comedy since the later was a Palestininian ( he was an American by citizenship ) and he openly said that was the reason.!
Dersho ! where was you then?
tts, what were the names of the comedians? we can google it, maybe it’s recorded!
Give me two days, I will provide it.I ahve the clip.thanks
thanks so much tts, it’s important history of racism and i/p

Hanania was removed from one of his first comedy appearances at the last minute at Zanies Comedy Club in Chicago in August 2002 when Jewish American comedian Jackie Mason refused to have him open for him. Zanies’ management claimed it was because of Hanania’s inexperience as a professional comedian, with fewer than 20 performances, but Mason’s manager and wife Jyll Rosenfeld said Mason was uncomfortable being on stage with Hanania because he is a “Palestinian.”[4]
wow!!
Nice covert racism.
@ Avi_G Yeah, and it rarely seems to go the other way. Hanania could have opted out saying your people are killing my people by the hundreds (2. Intifada; 2002) and tried to make a point that way, but instead he tried to explicitly open-palm reach out, American to American, to bridge differences (post-9/11; per the CBS article) and was rebuffed under that pretext.
Thanks tts.
“it was because of Hanania’s inexperience as a professional comedian”
ROTFL! C’mon, what comedian doesn’t want an experienced, professional act, which leaves the audience surfeited with boffo yoks galore, weak and exhausted from laughter, to open for them?
Hanania, who has criticized BDS (his position is akin to Beinart’s) , supports Walker on this

i like the headline, it’s like a 2 in one. good call.
dersh is a freak. his mind is convoluted. he could talk up into down and black into white. he could talk an apple into a tomato or a dog into a cat. or a rose into a lemon and a rainbow into a hurricane..
but he can’t turn alice walker into a neo nazi terrorist no matter how hard he tries.
and i am now convinced jpost will print anything.
Dersho’s advice is “go ahead and publish and ignore the author ” Wow! It’s now legal to steal someones product so barzenly?
for zionism we can change all the laws. it’s only…technical!
has anyone read the flip logic floating around that palestinians in the WB are the illegal imposters or invaders? i have read it on a few comment threads, i could dig it up.
“Wow! It’s now legal to steal someones product so barzenly?”
rotflomao!…..can you think of anything Israel hasn’t stolen? From nuclear material to cherry tomatoes……if it’s not nailed down they’ll steal it.
And if it is nailed down and they can’t steal it they’ll blow it up so no one else can have it.
Yes, American, and what ever became of the ’09 legal petition filed with the US Trade Representative Office to suspend the whole area of free trade with Israel because of Israel’s rampant theft of US-created products and a long pattern of criminal and fraudulent trade practices? link to irmep.org
Obama Administration Takes from American Farmers, Gives to Israel
Policy change slips in under the radar
Alison Weir
October 23, 2009
“At a time of financial crisis in the United States in which thousands of Americans have lost their jobs and homes, an Israeli news service reports that President Obama has just signed a presidential memo eliminating a tariff on Israel that protected American dairy farmers and that raised money for the American economy.
In addition, according to the Israeli report, US trade authorities have ordered the return of $17,000 to an Israeli export agent for a levy paid for butter produced by an Israeli company.
The move comes at a time when American dairy farmers have been facing what industry representatives call a “crisis.” According to the National Milk Producers Federation website, “U.S. dairy producers have been facing unprecedented losses over the past year due to low milk prices and high input costs. The dire economic straits have forced many dairy farmers to exit the industry, oftentimes having to sell their herds or farms.”2
According to the news report by Israeli wire service Ynet, the Obama memo, which was signed several days ago, removed the import subcharge on dairy products from Israel.
The report noted that such levies are important for protecting local production against competing imports, “which put the local production at risk.” The levy is required from most countries that export dairy products to the U.S.
According to Ynet, Israeli agricultural attaché Yaakov Poleg was able to convince the US that “the trade agreement between Israel and the US prohibits placing taxes on exports from Israel.”
However, this tax was required under previous American administrations.
The Ynet report quotes Israeli export agent Dudu Buch, whose company is to receive the $17,000, as taking credit for obtaining this change in US policy.
Buch states: “My American colleague was under a lot of pressure and almost gave up, saying that if the American system imposed a protection levy it would last forever.”
Buch goes on to say, “I told him that we Israelis can think differently. I turned to the Agriculture Ministry’s representative at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, and the matter was dealt with quickly.”
Israel’s attaché was particularly pleased that this change was made through a presidential memo, rather than through normal channels, stating “… in light of the fact that Israel was removed from the list through a presidential declaration, there is no fear that it will be placed on us again in the future.”
According to Ynet, Israeli dairy exports to the US are “constantly on the rise,” a situation that could hurt US dairy farmers.”

Thanks for bring this to our attention.
If you also go to thomas.gov, plug Israel in the seach function and select Trade and commerce area you will bring up a blue million special bills with exemptions for Israel products, bromide, tents, chemicals, you name it.
The first time I saw the sheer number of all the stand alone special bills exempting Israeli products I flipped out.
There is a mountain of shit for Israel buried under the public radar.
“If Americans Knew” indeed……if only.
Another sharp stick to the eye of the heartland. For Israel, to the detriment of US farmers, w/ bragging attached.
This is from 2009, but I wonder if this got reported on AgDay or other daily agribiz news shows (watched by family farmers) as such. If it was, I wonder whether it raised mental flags to watch for more of the same, iow, created a more receptive audience for all the other, broader issues relating to Israel.
American.
You need to be clearer about these search terms and the exact URLs/choices. Your description here does not work.
MRW
I should have said go to govtrac.com— but I just came from there and they have changed their search areas and you can’t bring it up now without a lot of other unrelated stuff. Same with thomas.gov and now you have download the pdf to read the pass bills and go thru a bunch of bills one by one and even more unrelated stuff so it’s doubly hard to find now. One way to do it would be to narrow it to trade and then do by one congress period at time or another way would be to enter specific products and read thru those bills dealing with them to find the Israel exemptions. If you use Thomas or govtrac now you have to look thru 1000’s of bills and read thru ones that don’t specify Israel “except in the body of the bill like S.2411.IS”
Very very time consuming. Probably easier now to just net search US-Isr trade, exempt Israel products, imports which would bring up US trade agency reports which would be more limited. Then you can use the bill number to if you want to read the entire bill.
I tell you though, I am more and more fed up with google since they ‘changed” their search results some years ago….it seems like ”the most pertinent” to your search are buried now under mountains of hits you have to cull thru.
This is example of all the stuff you get to go thru..

`(c) SHIPMENT OF ARTICLES OF ISRAEL THROUGH WEST BANK OR GAZA STRIP- The President is authorized to proclaim that articles of Israel may be treated as though they were articles directly shipped from Israel for the purposes of the Agreement even if shipped to the United States from the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, or a qualifying industrial zone, if the articles otherwise meet the requirements of the Agreement.
or this…..
S.2411
Textile, Apparel, and Footwear Trade Act of 1990 (Introduced in Senate – IS)
(E) the textile and clothing trade deficit of the United States exceeded $26,000,000,000 in 1989, an increase of 8 percent over 1988, and accounted for 21 percent of the Nation’s overall merchandise trade deficit;
In the case of Israel , such articles are textiles produced in Israel and textile products assembled in Israel from fabric or yarn produced in the United States or Israel . (are exempt)
You fail to take into account that Israel is exempt from all laws and all considerations of morality.
The logic will become much clearer once you allow for that.
So let me get this right. Walker is neo Nazi and Israel should forcibly publish this. What about those books ( like Walt and Mersheimer ‘s ) that were not published by US publisher out fear of hurting Dershosque senstivity against antisemite books? Or the book by name Host and Parasite by Greg Felton that was demanded to be removed from library discussion by canadian Jewish body?
not a problem! just more and more laws. we could even make discussing zionism illegal! a crime against humanity to challenge israel!
Pretty pathetic. It just goes to show how little one has to work with if one is seeking to defend Israel.
I wonder. Is it considered a breach of legal ethics to openly urge a course of criminal conduct? Could a motion to debar Dershowitz on these grounds be filed?
It’d certainly be taking a leaf out of the Zionist playbook to resort to such a tactic.

“Is it considered a breach of legal ethics to openly urge a course of criminal conduct? Could a motion to debar Dershowitz on these grounds be filed?”
At a glance, yes.
link to americanbar.org
He doesn’t not appear to be speaking as a lawyer here, but as a private person/jackass, so it is unlikely that anything will come of this. He is a vile toad, but he does have First Amendment Rights of free speech.
Additionally, not only does it appear Prof. Dershowitz is advocating criminal conduct, it appears that his advocacy of this illegal act might actually infringe upon the marketability of an already existing translation of The Color Purple in Hebrew, which is available – get this – at Dersh’s place of employment:
link to jpost.com
Assuming the Hebrew version is still in print and can be purchased in Israel (via Amazon?) then she has denied nobody anything except a particular permission. She has NOT said no Israeli should read her book.
BTW, the USA and Israel have been threatening war against Iran hot and heavy, despite UN Charter agreement nt to use war r threat of war for foreign policy. The_Dersh ™ is not out of line in recommending illegal behavior in the USA (or to Israel).
Perhaps it would be a service to the State Bar of Massachusetts or New York (or any other bars in which Dershowitz holds membership) to bring this copyright matter to their attention.
Ziocaine – from the fruits of the Hasbara, distilled for over a century. A powerful mind & morality altering drug administered in support of the Zionist Federation’s Greater Israel project and its illegal activities.
Ziocaine should never be taken by humans without several oceans of salt
Ziocaine has been shown to turn the brains of even the brilliant lawyer Alan M Dershowitz into a poisonous, seething, illogical mush. Effectively wiping away the basic tenets of Judaism which forbid false accusation, lies and theft. Rendering him incapable of remembering the most important basic element of the law, legality.
“…copyright laws, which are designed to encourage the promotion of literature”
Copyright laws are actually designed to encourage the legal promotion of literature to ensure authors are paid their royalties.
Ziocaine. Take it and you too will be able see words where they do not exist in the Balfour Declaration and the LON Mandate for Palestine. International Law, the UN Charter, numerous UNSC Resolutions, Conventions, statements by the Israeli provisional Government confirming Israel’s borders of May 15th 1948 and most importantly basic maths and common logic will disappear before your eyes. Even copyright law will be forever changed.
And aged in a septic tank for two decades for that tantalizing whiff of bull****.
“Ziocaine should never be taken by humans without several oceans of salt”
You mean the antidote is available in almost every kitchen? The hell of it is, kosher salt works equally as well, or so Rabbi Berger says.
“Take it (Ziocaine) and you too…”
Don’t forget, you can take it, or make it. Ziocaine is a self-created chemical messanger, akin to hormones, or endorphins or even adrenalin. From what we’ve seen here in the comment section at Mondoweiss, the synthetic stuff is not quite as good as the organic, natural product.
I know, you have doubts that it really exists? Google it, and see!
2090 results, all relevant, for “Ziocaine”!! It’s going virally vernacular! It’s lingua franca, baby!
I wonder who made it up in the first place? Oh, well, like a lot colloquial etymologies, I guess we’ll never really know.
I wonder who made it up in the first place?
hee hee hee
here’s webster’s definition:
Oy, that Webster! Such a mayven!
And it wouldn’t be the first time either. Ms. Walker also showed bigotry against the white state of South Africa and in support of ANC terrorists. She also personally took part in the shameful and illegal campaign of agitation led by Dr. Martin Luther King. Forget about translating; I say throw the book at this repeat offender.
Suddenly Dersh cares about blacks in the U.S.
Someone should ask him his opinion about Israel’s recent wave of violence and deportations of Sudanese and Eritreans.
I wonder if Ms. Walker could sue Dersh six ways to Sunday for defamation of character.
What must Harvard think about this?
Or what must we think of Harvard if they do not, at the very least, call out the Emergency Mental Health services and grant Dersh “stress leave”.
“What must Harvard think about this?”
It’s not like they have high standards. After all, they loooved Henry A. Murray, couldn’t do enough for him.
And I thought that the moral and legal equivalent of a neo-nazi mudslinger and war crime whitewasher had allready lost his marbles.
“Walker participated in unlawful efforts to break Israel’s entirely lawful military blockade of the Gaza Strip – a blockade designed to prevent Hamas and other terrorist groups from bringing to Gaza weapons that are aimed at Israeli civilians.”
I ran this through my newly developed Hasbara-Decypher 1.0. The output file reads:
Dershowitz participates in futile efforts to whitewash an entirely ineffective, collectively punishing and hence unlawful military blockade of the Gaza Strip – a blockade designed to prevent Palestinans from importing more than 50%, exporting more than 3%, accessing without any restriction 35% of farmland and 85% of fishing waters and which is primarily aimed at Palestinian civilians while the institutionalized terrorist group Israel brings in and develops weapons that are aimed at Palestinian civilians, their land, their property, their water and their human and international rights.
Which is a little different from what the moral and legal equivalent of a neo-nazi sustenance controller said: “We put them on a diet.”
Typical Dershowitz. He has similarly defamed Mearsheimer and Walt, Jimmy Carter, Richard Goldstone, Desmond Travers, Norman Finkelstein, Vanessa Redgrave, and who knows how many more. It’s not just that he criticizes, but he viciously and dishonestly condemns those he disagrees with. If he had no regard for the truth, it would be a huge improvement. His depravity knows no limits.
Dershowitz called Desmond Tutu “one of the most evil men in the world.” link to antonyloewenstein.com A fitting description of himself.
At this rate, Dersh is going to defame half the world.
But, if it happens (e.g. because they say you’re a clown), and you still think to be the right one, well, maybe there’s something you must do. Kind of be silent.
Harvard really ought to be looking into the rubbish Dersh spouts – he doesn’t put them in a good light even on other matters.
Listened to him two nights ago denouncing Texas for not prosecuting the young father who killed his small daughter’s rapist (the man having been caught in the act, assaulted, the distraught dad then trying to get help as fast as possible because he realised how much injury he’d inflicted):
link to bbc.co.uk
where it seemed he hadn’t even bothered to learn what had happened, denounced Texas, Grand Juries, expressed a preference for German law, etc. Starts 1.09 mins, Dersh comes in at 1.14 for 4 mins.
Why does anyone take Dersh seriously anymore is beyond me, especially after Finkelstein proved him to be a plagiarist. Not only a plagiarist, but a plagiarist from a completely discredited propagandist misinformation agent named Joan Peters.
This wacko is also risking rupturing the delicate relationship between the Jewish and African American communities with his hysteric smear campaigns and bogus accusations.
‘Why does anyone take Dersh seriously anymore is beyond me, especially after Finkelstein proved him to be a plagiarist.’
People ‘take Alan Dershowitz seriously’ because he lends a veneer of respectability and creditability to their beliefs. He’s a Harvard professor, you see.
So, let me get this straight. A woman who has lived her entire life as a proponent for the rights of the poor and the disenfranchised, fought against institutional discrimination the world over DOESN’T feel a sense of solidarity with the zionist enterprise in Palestine. Hmmm. Maybe, just maybe Israeli Jews aren’t the poor and disenfranchised in this instance? Maybe they are the discriminators?
Nah. She just hates Jews. The best part about this, to me at least, is watching a old rich white American male scream to the heavens that his identity is more closely identified with suffering and discrimination than a black american woman’s. Please continue, American Zionist Jews, tell us how being white people who happen to be Jewish has been harder than being black.

To the extent that BDS can have an effect on Jewish Israeli society (as opposed to creating international economic and diplomatic pressure), that’s the way it will work. There is a small but significant segment of the Jewish Israeli population that sees itself as a cosmopolitan and progressive. They can still dismiss Alice Walker, but if enough of the people they respect and appreciate most in the world tell them that they are in the wrong, that they are the oppressors this time, they will find themselves in a very difficult position. There are just so many shining lights you can dismiss as ignorant or prejudiced or manipulated.
The best part about this, to me at least, is watching a old rich white American male scream to the heavens that his identity is more closely identified with suffering and discrimination than a black american woman’s.
Amen, Dan.
“They can still dismiss Alice Walker, but if enough of the people they respect and appreciate most in the world tell them that they are in the wrong, that they are the oppressors this time, they will find themselves in a very difficult position.”
And if they had the slightest influence on those who control Israel; religious fanatics, settlers and their military and government allies, and the right-wing Americans who support them, it might have an effect.
I can’t understand why you persist in maintaining Israel can be persuaded to do anything within the lifespan of the Palestinian people?
Oh yes, I’m sure a time will come when Israel will admit what it’s done, and be willing to make any reparations to the Palestinians. That’ll happen right after the last one is gone.
I can’t understand why you persist in maintaining Israel can be persuaded to do anything within the lifespan of the Palestinian people?
I can’t understand why you persist in misunderstanding/misconstruing my posts and comments.
The part of my comment you cite is preceded by the qualification: “To the extent that BDS can have an effect on Jewish Israeli society …” “To the extent that” (scepticism) and “an effect” (not persuasion). I also wrote that this small minority of Israelis would “find themselves in a very difficult position”, not that they would suddenly see the error of their ways and lead the people to the Promised Land (as it were).
YoungMassJew likes this.
The more Alan Dersh froths, the more I’m happy.
Aside from the obvious Dersh-ness of his comments, when he says stuff like what he said about violating intellectual property (i/p) norms, he is actually regurgitating the long-standing Israeli approach to i/p protections.
Israel is routinely on the US Trade Representatives (301) watch list for i/p violations. Israel’s government/drug industry/regulatory process has a decades-old mechanism in place for soliciting new pharmas for approval, delaying the approval, reverse engineering the patented drug, and offering it up for export as a generic.
2005: link to globes.co.il
The accession to OECD was supposed to change these practices, but apparently didn’t (at least in the US):

MY COMMENT: What in the world did Justice Felix Frankfurter ever do to deserve this?
Harvard’s current Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law (Alan Dershowitz) has become a bizarre caricature of himself. But then, cognitive dissonance can make people do the craziest things! I hope Harvard Law School keeps a straightjacket handy in case Dershowitz goes completely postal.
I recall reading an article several years ago dealing with a debate or speech concerning Israel at a university in the U.K. (Oxford, I believe) in which Alan Dershowitz was described as speaking at a podium and “jumping up and down” (which I interpreted as his being ‘hopping mad’, or at least very agitated). But who knows, it might have been a display of Dershowitz’s “eroticized passion”.

CORRECTION: Oh no! Dear me! This is most embarrassing! I apparently confused the venerable Oxford with Cambridge (the upstart).
My sincerest apologies to Oxford and its alumni. I assure you that I meant no offence!

So I take it you are perfectly OK with Romney and his Israel/Iran stated policies?
Better the devil you know, eh, chet? Man, that’s one hell of a campaign slogan: ‘Not as bad as we can make Romney out to be” !
Exactly. ” If we elect Romney, we will end up with a dictator that keeps secret “kill lists” —-Oh, shit, yeah, thats already the case

MY REPLY: Since I do not live in a “swing” state, my vote will not really count anyway (due to the way that the “U.S. Electoral College” works). As a practical matter, all of my state’s 13 electoral votes will be going to the guy that no one could possibly want to have a beer with (i.e. the “Mittster”).
