Non-violent demonstration held Saturday in Beit Ummar; army declares ‘closed military zone’

West Bank’s anti-apartheid wall and settlement marches commemorated, this week, the 12th anniversary of Intifada, as demonstrators insisted on the option of resistance.
A group of Palestinian, Israeli and international activists gathered to demonstrate peacefully in front of the colony Karmei Tsur Saturday, September 29. When they entered the fields in front of the settlement a large group of soldiers from the Israeli occupation forces were blocking the roads and the agricultural fields, claiming that it was a closed military zone. West Bank Village Resists, Week after Week
Mohammed returned to the central square of his village in a small caravan of cars with his friends. Their horns were blaring. This wasn’t a usual night in Nabi Saleh: Half of its 500 inhabitants were already out in the square, surrounding a makeshift stage of lights and speakers. His friends dragged him out of the car and through the crowd, toward the lights. The crowd chanted “Freedom!” and then found their way into a song that declares against the jailer, “I will love the dark.” There was a play already underway, and suddenly it was about him — and, by extension, the nearly three-year-old struggle of his entire village.

Survey of Arab-Americans highlights drop in support for Obama, Alex Kane
The Arab-American community still largely supports President Barack Obama, but 15 percent of Arabs who voted for Obama in 2008 have not declared their support for him this year, according to a new poll released by the Arab American Institute (AAI). 52 percent of all Arab-Americans say they will vote for Obama, compared to 28 percent who have declared their support for Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate. The numbers are also broken down by religious identity. “Arab American Muslims support Obama overwhelmingly (75% to 8%), while Orthodox/Protestants support Romney by a 16% margin,” according to the poll.
Edward Said was a progressive liberal. He was not the radical that he is portrayed to be in Zionist media. But then again, anyone who stands up to Zionism is a radical by Zionist standards. My encounters with Edward Said (and I was not a friend of his and I only saw him a few times and we spoke on the phone a number of times and later exchanged emails – the last one I received from him said that he was “busy writing and dying”) attest to his political transformation over time. I first saw Edward Said at the Institute of Policy Studies in Washington, DC in 1984 ( it might have been 1985).

It has not gone unnoticed that Palestinians are showing little interest in Mahmoud Abbas’s speech to the United Nations, which he held on the 27th of September. Most Palestinians have no idea what he said, and do not care to know it. There is quite a contrast between the amount of attention given by Palestinians to this speech, and to the one that he held last year. The explanation for this is really quite simple, especially if the situation is summarized by highlighting a few of its most important aspects.

Palestine and Netanyahu’s bomb chart at the UN
The highlight of Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech as he addressed the 67th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York yesterday was by far and away his cartoon bomb chart.Complete with first, second and final stages (drawn within the outline), each marked a different point in Iran’s progress towards making a nuclear bomb. At some point Netanyahu produced a red marker, drawing a horizontal line near the tip of the bomb, or the final stage just above the 90% line; this is where the international community should act he told us, estimated to be next spring or summer.
