Israeli army captain assaults valiant protester Ezra Nawi

I’ve often gone to demonstrations in the occupied territories with the great Ezra Nawi, an Israeli plumber/activist– of whom there will one day be stained glass window portraits in synagogues. Here, seeking to document the weekly demonstration against the sprawling illegal Efrat settlement in al Masara yesterday, he gets pushed around by an Israeli army captain.

Nawi is a man of few words. Action is everything for him. But he wrote on Facebook of the manhandling:

“An IDF captain shamelessly assaulting me, trying to snatch the camera from my hand, throwing a stun grenade and a tear gas grenade at us from practically zero distance. I foresee an interesting future for him”

“Ezra Nawi, an Israeli plumber/activist– of whom there will one day be stained glass window portraits in synagogues”

What about Nawi’s 1997 conviction for the statutory rape of a 15-year-old boy?
A grown man who has sex with an underage boy is hardly a role model.

Most of these soldiers are weak and insecure. Empowered by their guns and uniform. In reality they would crumble if they were ever to find themselves alone on that same street. Cowards

I look forward to the day when I can read a book written by a Palestinian where Ezra Nawi is described as a Palestinian version of “Ann Frank Diaries.”

He has paid his debt to society, Mr. Obsidian, and he IS a role model for Israeli activists. His dedication, his courage, his resilience.

“of whom there will one day be stained glass window portraits in synagogues”
What a lovely sentiment. Something to look forward to!
