Obama heads for the occupation– and why isn’t Ben Ehrenreich on NPR?

I don’t get it. Just as Obama flies to Israel, a young novelist publishes a staggering testament to Palestinian resistance on the cover of the New York Times— Ben Ehrenreich’s piece on the noble villagers of Nabi Saleh, in which he relates his own arrest by Israeli authorities– and no one at National Public Radio interviews him. My Ehrenreich search for the last 7 days; a bagel. I figure other broadcast media are also off the case. What say you, Rachel Maddow?

Ehrenreich’s story has so many angles anyone could pick it up: Haaretz lamented, “Days before Obama visit, NYT publishes pro-Palestinian manifesto”; the IMEU is featuring the story under the heading “Unarmed Resistance”; but The Forward’s editor attacked Ehrenreich because the Palestinians throw stones; and Ehrenreich himself wrote in 2009 in the LA Times that abandoning Zionism is the only way to save “the Jewish ideals of justice that date back to Jeremiah.” I believe that Ehrenreich’s anti-Zionist op-ed (which was produced angrily by Israel supporters after his arrest prompted a twitter-blitz last July, as I recall) played a role in the 8-month delay of his piece; so the piece itself is a milestone in the battle over anti-Zionism inside the Jewish community, which is so important and thrilling.

And today Brian Lehrer of WNYC is interviewing who? Zev Chafets, ardent Zionist and U.S. emigrant to Israel, former speechwriter for Menachem Begin.

Thanks Phil. Ehrenreich’s LA Times piece from 2009 that you cite is really a gem- so thoughtful and beautifully written:

It has been argued that Zionism is an anachronism, a leftover ideology from the era of 19th century romantic nationalisms wedged uncomfortably into 21st century geopolitics. But Zionism is not merely outdated. Even before 1948, one of its basic oversights was readily apparent: the presence of Palestinians in Palestine.

“I believe that Ehrenreich’s anti-Zionist op-ed (which was produced angrily by Israel supporters after his arrest prompted a twitter-blitz last July, as I recall) played a role in the 8-month delay of his piece; so the piece itself is a milestone in the battle over anti-Zionism inside the Jewish community, which is so important and thrilling.”

Once again demonstrates how long most Jews have been complicit in maintaining the apartheid state of Israel. A milestone in the Jewish community. So sad in so many ways that it has taken so long. But again better late than never.

2009 article in the LA times
“For most of the last century, a principled opposition to Zionism was a mainstream stance within American Judaism.” This line is total bull. Where can anyone show any examples of this opposition to Zionism in any sizable amount? Total spin. Hooey

What say you, Rachel Maddow?

Expecting anything from Maddow is like attempting to fish in a puddle. It’s VERY shallow and the chances of it containing any fish are zilch to none.

But she is good at regurgitating soundbites and tacking on her own brand of obnoxious sarcasm. I’ll give her that.

And fluffer of racist, misogynist dirtbags like Rusty Limpballs.
