The Process

Now again, the Process.

It’s hard not to be nauseated – in the most visceral sense – by its every representation and permutation. Its endless recapitulation by people who don’t know better or by cowardly or two-dimensional people who do. A rank and stiff load on a public dais. Infused periodically with amphetamines. That’s what’s on offer.

The set: Tony Blair is somehow relevant. Martin Indyk with his irritating grin and Dennis Ross, a success or a failure depending on where you stand, trading stories. Tzipi Livni, who’s managed to stay one step ahead of the law but cannot outrun her legacy. Saeb Erakat and Mahmoud Abbas, two inflatable characters whose unbearable lightness cannot mask the yawning hole in the wall. And Grand Marshall Kerry… the object of all vicarious embarrassment in the world.

It’s a circus act in sagging tent. Shabby clowns deliver earnest lines in an empty space.

A timely outing to remind all how it works!

NEWS FLASH: A heretofore unknown work of Franz Kafka’s has just been discovered in a Prague attic. Readers have long known of “The Castle”. They are even more familiar with “The Trial”. Now we finally have the third part of the trilogy, “The Process”!

Yes, another peace process party. A cluster of balloons, grease stained paper plates, some baloney and grapes, warm diet pesi… everyone acting like they’re having fun. Vicarious embarrassment indeed. If there weren’t lives at stake this nauseating crowd of pretenders would induce a feeling of pity.

“…Dennis Ross, a success or a failure depending on where you stand…”

Exactly. He is either the biggest failure or greatest success American politics has ever known.

Well, no.

It’s a command performance, given in AIPAC’s tent and at its request. What’s important is that Kerry and various others SHOW UP. It is understood that nothing of substance must eventuate from it. It is successful when it is a sort of sham.

But what sort of sham? A sham as a peace process, surely, but VERY IMPORTANT as a proof of subservience to AIPAC.

“Be there or be square, Kerry” were the last words Kerry heard from the DNC and its finance committee, Debbie what’s-her-name, etc. So, whattdya think? He’s there.

There he is. And the space is not empty. It is filled with the audience of AIPAC officials.

Who pays the piper calls the tune.
