Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been convicted of corruption charges linked to a giant Jerusalem construction project. Here’s Al Jazeera‘s report. Here’s the Times.
I am glad to see Olmert go. He is an overpumped blowhard who is more about B.S. and corruption than politics and peace.
Olmert who warned about an apartheid struggle if Israel didn’t make peace… Olmert who was published in the New York Review of Books, “The Time Has Come to Say These Things.”
We must reach an agreement with the Palestinians, meaning a withdrawal from nearly all, if not all, of the [occupied] territories.
So Peter Beinart, Jeremy Ben-Ami and David Remnick have lost their champion: the good reasonable Israeli who was an unreasonable right-winger and now sees the light.
Don’t worry, Beinart and Ben-Ami will find someone to replace Olmert soon enough. Possible candidates: Yair Lapid, Tzipi Livni, Yitzak “Buji” Herzog (he’s a bit light on the right-wing cred). And here is another outsider– and don’t laugh, you just never know– Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu. (Two of the candidates are among the “Killer B’s” I cited in a post at the site).
I just checked the Hebrew press. It is the lede everywhere. Ha’aretz has this on top on its Hebrew website:
“Ehud Olmert: Former Prime Minister, Repeat [Serial] Offender [Criminal]. “
They say the prosecution is asking that Olmert serve at least one year in prison. Gee, my heart bleeds cold borscht for Olmert. That means he may be in prison for the next J Street Conference. His shoes will be difficult to fill.
I was smiling the whole time while reading this. Very well written, funny and, most importantly, true to a tee. As with the best sarcasm, you never who is the worst: the criminal or the supposed peaceniks boosting him in perpetuity.
If they just wanted to put him in jail, they could have easily done as much by simply conducting an independent investigation of Operation Cast Lead – and they would have won some political capital in the process. This and the Winograd Commission are part of his comeuppance from his Zionist brethren.

MY COMMENT: He deserves to get a hell of a lot more than one measly year in prison for helping to create the god-awful Holyland eyesore*.

Late last night I realized I keep looking at the IP conflict as if it’s a chrysalis and I wondered, ‘What will it finally be? Will it become a breathtakingly beautiful butterfly or a malicious, mutated monster?’
Deep down in my heart I already knew the answer, for it is so crystal clear to see…, it is, unfortunately… the latter…
Ira Glunts doesn’t so much hate Olmert and corruption. He hates liberal Zionism. The war of ideas, Ha!
