UN commemorates Palestine’s long journey

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People was celebrated on Monday, November 24th, at the U.N. in New York. The evening event began with a reception for the photography exhibit in the lobby of the U.N. building. The exhibit, entitled “The Long Journey,” consists of photographs of Palestinians, from the archive of UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.) Guests at the reception seemed to very much like the image above, which was taken by an unknown photographer.

Here is U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, looking at it:

Many of the pictures were quite touching, including this one, by another “unknown” photographer:

After viewing the photographs, guests made their way upstairs, to the impressive Trusteeship Council Chamber:

Guests were treated to a musical performance by “The Joubran Trio.” The musicians played extremely beautiful instruments. The instruments themselves were art pieces. One of the performers is also the instrument-maker who made them:

It was an otherworldly experience. Here is a picture of how the U.N. building looked at the end of the evening:

It is required to make a reservation to view the exhibit, which will be on view through December 31st.

Interesting. I had not heard or read about this in the U.S. news. I wonder, does the journey have a destination, or is it simply a perpetual journey away from home, the journey of perpetual exiles?

Certainly the Jan 31 UNRA photograph of Palestinians in Yarmouk is among the most iconic images of recent years. Unfortunately as one expects to see whenever images or videos of Palestinian suffering are published, charges of fakery arose. These absurd charges were the subject of a NYT article:

The Yarmouk photo was published by nearly 1,000 newspapers, including The New York Times. Britain’s Daily Mail called it a “biblical picture of suffering.” On Twitter, the photo provoked expressions of incredulity and outrage that such conditions existed, as well as questions about the authenticity. Some viewers speculated that the image of desperate and hungry people had been manipulated with techniques that are increasingly easy.
Mr. Gunness called such speculation “completely baseless and utter nonsense.” Asked who might have been responsible for spreading such criticism, he said, “I’ve got no idea.”

“AP – The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved an Arab-backed resolution criticizing Israel for refusing to join an international treaty against nuclear proliferation.

The resolution notes that Israel is the only Middle Eastern country that is not party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

It called on Israel to join the treaty and put its nuclear facilities under the safeguard of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency.

The General Assembly approved the resolution in a 161-5 vote, with 18 countries abstaining. The United States and Canada were among five countries that joined Israel in opposing the resolution.”
