‘Forward’ ad on all the great ways to be Jewish doesn’t mention Israel

The divorce between the American and Israeli Jewish communities is approaching. This is an ad that the Forward, the leading Jewish newspaper, put up in the Lexington Avenue subway line, at 86th Street, on Wednesday. My friend Claire Paddock took the pictures. The text is here:

And what’s missing? Israel. So Tablet is appealing to young Zionists, and the Forward is reaching out to non-Zionists. Bigger market share! This is the trend, folks. Norman Braman, Marco Rubio’s backer, says that American Jews were transformed by the creation of Israel and have to be reminded of this, but Braman is in his 80s, and the Forward doesn’t want any part of that.

By the way, go to J Street’s website and look for the word Zionism. I tried that yesterday. The word isn’t on J Street’s “About” page. I found it in this interview with a rabbi, but not many other places.

I like the “no enforced conformity”. Tell it to AIPAC and Hillel, Int’l.

The writing is on the wall…

I don’t find anything the least bit admirable about these ads, sounds like the same old Jewish exceptionalism to me. (The “sublime pleasures and profound responsibilities of being Jewish”; “… but in our highest values and boldest aspirations”– as opposed to the values and bold aspirations of others, they mean?)

The Times ran an extraordinarily racist ad campaign about 20 or so years ago, What Being Jewish Means to Me, they ran on the op-ed page. And the gist of those ads was the same as these — that society is made up of two distinct groups — Jews and Gentiles. And lucky you — you’re a Jew!

Does this “Nobody can tell you” mean “we could tell you, but then we’d have to kill you” or “nobody knows”?

Lol. As usual, you’re reading things into the ad that aren’t there.
