The banality of evil as captured in a selfie

The Christian Peacemaker Team Palestine, a faith-based organization in Hebron that supports Palestinian-led, nonviolent, grassroots resistance to the Israeli occupation, published the photo above with the following description:

While these three men were detained at the checkpoint yesterday afternoon, Israeli soldiers stood by and started taking selfies. Two of the men were detained for over an hour, while one was released after 40 minutes. One of the men was taken behind the container to be body searched. Meanwhile, these soldiers ensured that they captured their role in this humiliating, infuriating and violating occupation for social media.

this photo should be on the front page of the nyt in all its banal, evil and lascivious glory

As a Palestinian kids growing up in occupied Gaza during the first Intifada, I have seen people arrested, killed, injured, and beaten. It was horrible. But what still sticks with my 20 years later are the regular sessions of humiliation at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces. Sometimes they would beat us for the fun it. Sometimes they would line us and, smiling, a soldier would try to slap two or three of us with one hit. The others stood their giggling. And then they would usually follow. That was one major reason why I threw stones at the passing Military jeeps later one.

Nice to see the gals have cracked the glass ceiling of venality.

I saw this on Twitter the other day and knowing social media like I think I do it’s just a matter of time before the IDF has to comment.

If we’re lucky the girls (and due to their lack of maturity that’s what they are) will get a week’s suspension to ponder their wicked ways.

“A picture worth a thousand words”

If you google image ‘nazi taking selfie’ guess who shows up.
